Price tag for Michael Jackson's funeral: over $800,000

According to court papers obtained by EW, the price tag for Michael Jackson’s September funeral totaled $855,730.31. The bulk if the cost — $590,000, to be exact — went to the interment. Mausoleum upkeep required $88,500, while over $170,000 went to private security and lighting. Smaller costs: $3,682 went to a framed photo of Jackson placed next to his casket, $1,975 to wardrobe for his family, and $35,000 to Jackson’s burial wardrobe.

Suspect in Letterman extortion case seeks dismissal

In a Manhattan courtroom today, a lawyer for Robert Joel “Joe” Halderman — the man accused of trying to extort David Letterman for $2 million over the talk show host’s sexual relations with staffers  — said he was seeking dismissal of the indictment brought against the former CBS producer. A lawyer for Halderman told reporters, “There was no extortion. This was a commercial transaction, nothing more. [Letterman's] celebrity is why we are here today.” Letterman’s lawyer, on the other hand, also told reporters, “Mr. Letterman is fully prepared to see this through to the end — including testifying at trial.”

The next hearing is set for Jan. 19. Prosecutors must file their response to Halderman by Dec. 15. Halderman pleaded not guilty in October. Letterman’s lawyer did not immediately respond to EW’s calls for comment.

Television watching at an all-time high

The Nielsen Company has found that television watching is at an all-time high in the U.S. According to Nielsen, “Americans spent four hours and 49 minutes a day on average in front of the TV,” during the 2008-2009 television season. That number is up four minutes from the 2007-2008 season, and 20 percent higher than numbers from a decade ago. Also a new record: The average amount of time a household took in television (eight hours and 21 minutes a day).

'Twilight' leads People's Choice Awards nominations

Nominees for the People’s Choice Awards were announced today, and, from the looks of it, people are still craving vampires. More than 18 million votes placed Twilight and True Blood atop the this year’s crop. Twilight was nominated for favorite movie, franchise and on-screen team (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner). Stewart and Pattinson were nominated in favorite actor and actress categories as well, while Lautner is in contention for breakout movie actor.

True Blood, on the other hand, has been nominated for favorite TV obsession and sci-fi/fantasy TV show. Anna Paquin also nabbed a nomination for TV drama actress.

Kathy Griffin's ABC dance series tabled

ABC is no longer planning to premiere the Kathy Griffin-hosted reality competition Let’s Dance on Nov. 23, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show was to feature celebrity teams reenacting famous dance routines, but ran into casting difficulties. The network will air Find My Family, which reunites long-lost relatives, in its place.

Letterman case suspect to ask that charges be dropped

The suspect in the David Letterman extortion case will ask the court to drop the case, the AP reports. The lawyer for TV news producer Robert J. Halderman, who’s due in New York City court today, will ask that the first-degree grand larceny charge be dismissed. Attorney Gerald Shargel plans to challenge the grand jury evidence that led to his arrest on charges that he blackmailed the late-night host for $2 million, which prompted Letterman to publicly acknowledge affairs he’s had with staffers.

Long-gestating 'Sgt. Rock' moving forward

DC Comics’ Sgt. Rock is finally getting closer to having his own film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) will direct, with Chad St. John, who wrote the spec script The Days Before, writing. Producer Joel Silver has been trying to get the project off the ground for nearly two decades, with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star at one point and Guy Ritchie more recently a candidate for director. But the new take will move the World War II hero into modern times.

'Alvin' sequel moves up to Dec. 23 release

Alvin, Simon and Theodore will be back earlier than expected. 20th Century Fox has moved up the release date of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel to Dec. 23 instead of Christmas Day, Variety reports.  The crowded holiday schedule also includes wide releases on Christmas Day for Sherlock Holmes, It’s Complicated, Up in The Air and Nine.

Donald Trump to work on dating show with Omarosa

Donald Trump will reunite with of the most famous contestants from The Apprentice — Omarosa Maingault-Stallworth. According to Variety, Trump Productions and Juma Entertainment will produce Omarosa’s Ultimate Merger for cable network TV One. The reality show will follow her choosing a mate from 12 eligible bachelors. Trump, who will appear on camera offering her advice, told Variety: “Omarosa is smart, witty and difficult, but all of those qualities will make for some very interesting entertainment.”
