George Lopez premieres to strong ratings

The Monday night premiere of George Lopez’s new talk show attracted strong ratings. Variety reports that Lopez Tonight drew 3.1 million people on TBS, TNT and TruTV, including 1 million in the important 18-49 demographic. Lopez’s first effort, which welcomed guests Ellen DeGeneres, Eva Longoria-Parker, Kobe Bryant and Carlos Santana, beat The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in the ratings.

Food Network serves up 'Worst Cooks'

Food Network is adding Worst Cooks in America to its menu. According to Variety, the channel’s new show, hosted by Secrets of a Restaurant Chef‘s Anne Burrell and top chef Beau MacMillan, will begin Jan. 3 and last five episodes. Unskilled but aspiring chefs will compete against each other for $25,000.

Summit on board for Spain-set thriller 'Cold Light of Day'

Summit Entertainment is now co-financing (with Intrepid Pictures) thriller The Cold Light of Day, Variety reports. The film is about an American man whose family is kidnapped while on vacation in Spain; he tries to find them and uncovers family secrets. No director is attached yet.

New Regency, Peter Chernin win rights to 'My Name Is Memory'

Variety reports that Fox-based New Regency and Peter Chernin have beat out other studios for the film rights to Ann Brashares’ My Name Is Memory. The book, out next June, is the first of a three-book series. The story follows soul mates who keep losing each other as they travel through hundreds of years.

Winona Ryder to play Lois Wilson

Winona Ryder and Barry Pepper will star in Hallmark Hall of Fame movie When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story, Variety reports. The project starts shooting this week in Toronto and will air later this season on CBS. The story is about Lois Wilson, the co-founder of Al-Anon, and her alcoholic husband Bill Wilson, who founded Alcoholics Anonymous.

Source says Julianne Hough, Chuck Wicks split

People reports that singers Julianne Hough and Chuck Wicks have split. They are each still expected to attend the Country Music Association Awards tonight — Hough as a presenter and Wicks covering the red carpet. A source told People: “This was mutual. They needed some time apart.”

Denzel Washington to star in Broadway's 'Fences'

Broadway is getting another big name in lights — Denzel Washington is set to star in next spring’s revival of August Wilson’s Fences, according to the AP. Producers Carole Shorenstein Hays and Scott Rudin plan to open the play in April at a theater to be annouounced later. Kenny Leon (Radio Golf, Gem of the Ocean) will direct. Washington’s last appearance on Broadway was in a 2005 revival of Julius Caesar.

Simon Cowell, Donald Trump, Charlie Sheen among TV's best-paid men

If you have occasion to lunch with Simon Cowell, make sure he picks up the check, because he’s definitely good for it. According to Forbes’ annual Prime Time’s Top Earning Men survey, the American Idol judge took home $75 million between June 1, 2008 and June 1, 2009. To be clear, that figure represents Cowell’s total income–not just his TV show paycheck, but money from endorsement deals, music publishing, and more. Number 2 on the Forbes list: The Apprentice’s Donald Trump, who made $50 million. In fact, of the 11 dudes in the top 10 (Patrick Dempsey and David Caruso tied for tenth with $9 million each), five came from the reality genre. Biggest earning scripted series star: Two and a Half Men’s Charlie Sheen at Number Four with $21 million. Forbes reports that the former Mr. Denise Richards makes a whopping $800,000 per episode, including syndication dough.

Miss California USA director responds to Carrie Prejean's book

Keith Lewis, the executive director of Miss California USA, has issued a response to Still Standing, the memoir written by former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean. “Unfortunately, Ms. Prejean has once again taken us away from preparing for the upcoming 2010 Miss California USA pageant on Nov. 22,” the statement reads. “Her book is full of inaccuracies and outright lies. We are considering all legal options, but remain committed to the business of beauty. Ms. Prejean was fired because of breach of contract and her most recent admission is only further proof that our decision was not optional but mandatory.” Prejean, currently embarking on a media blitz to promote the book, criticized the organization in her memoir.

Judge blocks Joe Jackson's challenge to executors of Michael's estate

An L.A. judge has blocked Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson’s request for the two executors of the late singer’s estate to be disqualified. The judge ruled that Jackson, who was omitted from Michael’s will, had “no standing” to challenge it. Jackson’s challenge follows his Nov. 6 request to receive a monthly allowance from his son’s estate, which the judge will rule on Dec. 10. Jackson’s former associates John Branca and John McClain were executors of his will and have been administering his estate.
