First Oscars of the season handed out at Governors Awards ceremony

Categories: Movies

On Saturday night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences threw its first Governors Awards event to honor legendary actress Lauren Bacall, B-movie director Roger Corman, The Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis, and studio executive and producer John Calley, the Los Angeles Times reports. Bacall, Corman, and Willis received Oscar statuettes, while Calley was recognized with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Due to health concerns, Calley couldn’t accept his award in person, but past Thalberg winners (including Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, and George Lucas) accepted the honor on his behalf.

The three-hour dinner party, which was held at the Grand Ballroom above Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, marked the first time the Academy bestowed its honorary awards at an event other than the annual Academy Awards ceremony. Although the Governors Awards was not televised, portions of the evening may be shown during the upcoming Oscars telecast on March 7.

In an interview with Time, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke commented on the rumored relationship between stars Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson—a subject the young actors have refused to speak about publicly. “In terms of what Kristen told me directly, it didn’t happen on the first movie,” said Hardwick. “Nothing crossed the line while on the first film. I think it took a long time for Kristen to realize, O.K., I’ve got to give this a go and really try to be with this person.” Earlier this month, Stewart explained her silence on the matter to EW, saying, “I probably would’ve answered it if people hadn’t made such a big deal about it… But I’m not going to give the fiending an answer.”

Stephenie Meyer on 'Oprah': Question about possible fifth 'Twilight' book cut for time, says Harpo rep

Categories: Books, Television, Twilight

Earlier today, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for her one and only interview before the highly anticipated release of the movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Before a commercial break, Winfrey teased the rest of the interview with this promise: “Coming up, will there be a fifth book in The Twilight Saga? Stephenie answers that later.” However, as a number of EW.com readers pointed out, Winfrey subsequently never asked Meyer that juicy question.

What happened? “It’s a live show, so sometimes they don’t get to every question,” a spokesman for Harpo Productions told EW. “Know that if (Oprah) didn’t get to the question within the show, it would have only been cut for time.” Luckily, someone at Oprah managed to ask Meyer the fifth-book question backstage, and the author’s answer can be viewed at the show’s website.

In a nutshell, Meyer said she’s not sure about a fifth Twilight book at the moment. “I am a little burned out on vampires right now,” she said. “I think I need a little break. I might go spend some time with my aliens. I might do something completely different. I’ve got to cleanse the palate. I may come back to it. I did envision it as a longer series. But I wrapped Breaking Dawn in a way that I felt satisfied with, so if that moment didn’t come, I’d be okay.”
