NBC has greenlit a pilot for a new culinary competition reality show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the prize will be among the biggest in reality TV history, with the winner launching his or her own chain of restaurants — four outlets would open the week of the show’s finale. The tentatively titled United Plates of America is from Top Chef producers Magical Elves. Contestants will have to impress investors from the cooking and business worlds with their restaurant concepts, menus, and management skills.

HBO renews 'Real Time with Bill Maher' for eighth season
HBO has renewed the political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher for its eighth season, Variety reports. The weekly program, which debuted in 2003 and airs Friday nights at 10:00 p.m., drew an average of 1.2 million viewers last season — an increase of 24 percent from the season before that.

Will Ferrell is Hollywood’s most overpaid star, according to an annual Forbes.com study that examined the average return of investment for each dollar spent on an actor’s salary. Forbes claims that for every dollar Ferrell was paid, the comedian’s films earned $3.29 — the lowest amount among Hollywood’s 100 biggest stars. Most of the blame can be placed on Ferrell’s summer bomb, Land of the Lost, which grossed only $64.8 million worldwide, but had an estimated budget of $100 million. Below is Forbes’ list of the 10 most overpaid stars, with each actor’s average return on investment in parenthesis:

Andrew Lloyd Webber back in hospital with infection
Phantom of the Opera composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been readmitted to a London hospital following a prior operation for prostate cancer, according to a statement posted Tuesday on his website. “He has been advised that while the operation was entirely successful, he has developed a post-operative ‘chronic infection’ which needs immediate treatment,” says the statement. “He still hopes to be back at work in the New Year.” The 61-year-old composer announced last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Lloyd Webber’s new musical Love Never Dies — a sequel to Phantom — is scheduled to begin previews Feb. 20 in London.
'Daily Show"s John Oliver lands new stand-up series on Comedy Central
John Oliver will host John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, a six-episode stand-up series that premieres Jan. 8 on Comedy Central, the network announced today. Oliver—a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a recurring guest star on the NBC comedy Community—will anchor each hourlong episode and introduce performances by four of his favorite comedians, including Janeane Garofalo, Paul F. Tompkins, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Nick Kroll, Kristen Schaal, and Brian Posehn.
Nicole Richie admitted to hospital for pneumonia
A representative for Nicole Richie said today that the 28-year-old TV personality was hospitalized for pneumonia at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles but is “doing well,” according to People. Apparently Richie had been under the weather for several days, posting on her Twitter page on Sunday: ”ok cold, it’s been 6 days. Lets part ways graciously & keep it moving.” On Monday at a court hearing, in which she sought a restraining order against two celebrity photographers, Richie’s lawyer told the judge that she was feeling sick.
NBC sets Aug. 29 as date for 62nd Primetime Emmys
NBC announced today that it will air the the 62nd Primetime Emmys on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010. The annual television awards show is typically held in mid- to late September, but by slating it in late August—before the new TV season begins—the network will avoid a scheduling conflict with Sunday Night Football. In 2006, NBC aired the Emmys on Aug. 27 for the same reason, and the network noted that that it was the highest-rated entertainment program for that summer, and stands as the highest-rated Emmy telecast of the last four years.
Sarah Palin interview scores 'Oprah' highest rating in two years
Oprah Winfrey’s exclusive interview with Sarah Palin on Nov. 16 gave the talk show queen her biggest audience in more than two years with a household overnight rating of 8.7 and 13 share. Those numbers exceeded Winfrey’s 2007 sit-down with the entire Osmond family, as well as the two-part interview with Whitney Houston that kicked off this season, and last season’s post-election episode.
