CBS announced today that Three Rivers, the Alex O’Loughlin drama about transplant surgeons, has been pulled from the schedule indefinitely and that reruns of NCIS: Los Angeles will take its place Sundays at 10 pm beginning Dec. 6. A CBS spokesman said the freshman drama will remain in production – the network ordered 13 episodes – but that no decision has been made about its future.
Averaging 8.4 million viewers, Three Rivers is currently ranked No. 45 among all primetime shows. The drama was one of the more anticipated shows on CBS this fall because it starred O’Loughlin, a fan favorite from the cult hit Moonlight.

CBS: Now revive Moonlight since the star is free again!
Sorry for all of you who love Three Rivers. But I’ve been catching Moonlight reruns on the Chiller channel over Thanksgiving, and I had forgotten how much potential–and chemistry–that show had. CBS was awfully shortsighted in canceling it, in light of the Twilight/True Blood phenomenon (and even the moderate success of Vampire Diaries).
Anyone agree? (Yes, I know a Moonlight revival is unlikely, but I still had to put it out there.
I agree. Moonlight was a definate for runner, and if it had just stayed on the air a bit longer, it would have become a phenomenon…..if they could just give it another chance!! I just couldn’t get into Alex O’laughlin as a surgeon…..to me he is still just the hottest vampire ever!! Hands down!! Bring him back!!
I loved moonlight. loved it. But I was warming to O’Loughlin in his new role and wish they’d just shown some of his chemistry earlier on to remind everyone how sexy he is…things were hinted but something more overt, sadly, would have hooked in viewers. I was rooting for Sophia Myles to guest star on the show.
if by forerunner you mean that it had the exact premise (vampire detective in los angeles) as a show that ran 5 years before it and was superior, then yes…it was a forerunner.
LOL CORDELIA…I guess we know where your heart lies from your name!
I was a HUGE Angel fan too, but to my surprise, I really got into Moonlight, despite noticing the various aspects of Angel they copied. But when Moonlight began, Angel had already been off for a few years. It wasn’t like they were competing. And Moonlight spun its own storyline. I would argue that it was a far more romantic show than Angel. It also had more of a focus on reality-based crime and detective work than alternate dimensions and demons. In the end, I really didn’t mind them spinning off concepts I enjoyed from Angel into a relatively different show.
They need to bring back “Flashpoint.”
Flashpoint will return to the CBS primetime schedule in 2010.
We liked Moonlight…AND Alex. Another medical drama doesn’t intrest me…regardless of how much I heart Alex O’Laughlin.
I agree. Alex and Moonlight was good fun. Medical dramas are a turn off.
I watch Moonlight on chiller also. I almost forgot how much I loved this show. I get chills just thinking about what they could’ve done if they only gave this show a chance. Alex is “free” I wonder what Sophia Myles is up to? I don’t think they’ll revisit this show but I’d watch if they did.
I agree — I loved Alex as Mick and the premise of the show. This show, albeit good, is depressing. I go to tv to escape. I have enough death and illness in my family that I don’t need to watch it on tv. Bring back Mick St. John…
I have to agree Moonlight rocked and we never saw what happened to Beth and Mick… Suxs… But I have to say Alex in three rivers gives me my fix!!!
I am an RN & I live in Washington, Pa…35 miles south of Pittsburgh. I am very familiar with Pittsburgh as well as medical field, working 20 years in ICU & CCU then homecare superviser for 20+ yrs. I loved “THREE RIVERS” & am saddened by the removal. Do we need unreal shows or ones that depict life and the tragic needs of many. DEPRESSING ????? It is depressing not making the world aware of the need for transplant donors. ALSO…the show was great. Loved the actors, etc. PLEASE give it back to us !!!!!
I love Three Rivers too. Don’t cancel it please.
Three Rivers is a very inspiring show and everyone should be nmade aware of the need for organ donors and the fate that awaits the many who are in need of an organ transplant. My husband received a lung transplant at UPMC in Pittsburgh 4 years ago today.
I just loved Three Rivers!!!!!!!!!!Of all the doctors dramas on TV this show will help get the word out to be a Organ Donor. As I have a rare Liver Disorder and could possibly need a transplant in the future.SO Many people could be SAVED with help from this show .It shows some of what sick people go thru to find a donor that could save many patients. This Show Could SAVE MILLIONS of People with help from Three Rivers.and the great cast of actors.PLEASE bring it back.
Thank You Mel in Maine
I agree wholeheartedly! I loved Three Rivers, & have been anxiously awaiting its return. Please bring it back!
I’ve had a difficult time following The Amazing Race and Three Rivers on Sunday evenings because of the uncertainty of the broadcast schedule due to live sports that CBS broadcasts leading into those two shows. My PVR is just as flabbergasted as I am.
I’m surprised anybody is able to follow TAR or TR because of the fluid broadcast times.
Its cuz we actually “WATCH” it live. Ever hear of doing that? Its what people HAD to do in the old days. (Yeah I know we have “technology” now).
No, Andre was right. Sometimes TAR wouldn’t start on time and Three Rivers would start fifteen or twenty minutes into the hour. Most viewers, I suspect, might have gotten confused and just found something else to watch instead of continuing to check back and see if it had started yet. It was frustrating.
It was worse than 15 or 20 minutes into the hour. Three Rivers was 45 minutes behind one night. I actually set my DVR up to stop recording 2 hours late, so no matter how long football ran over I would still be able to watch it. I got into it one night just to have my DVR cut off 15 minutes before the end of the show. So annoying! But I was really getting into it and I really wanted to know what was going to happen with Kuol. And the Mandy Patinkin episode was amazing.
I was just getting into the show. Too bad.
Agreed. I liked the show and was disappointed when they moved it to ten p.m. Should have seen this coming.
I watch Amazing Race, but do what I do, just record from 8 to 11 – you will get both shows.
MAN!!!!!! I was hoping it wouldn’t be canceled! I love this show! Maybe they should try it at a different time or on a different night!
Totally! Sunday is a terrible night to put anything on CBS, because of all the stupid sports stuff that make the shows run late! It ruins all the ‘regular’ good programs! Aren’t there enough sports channels already?! Please try a different day!
I loved the show. It was a different take on medical shows. I wish you would bring it back. I like Ryan Abbott.
Now you can resuscitate “MOONLIGHT” the time is RIGHT!
I don’t watch “medical dramas,” but I’d caught Three Rivers a few times because I’d had to record TAR extra long to not miss it, and got TR as a bonus. It isn’t too bad, for that type of series, so I wonder why it hasn’t found an audience? It could be the “football” runover effect, but I suppose only “tv researchers” will know for sure.
Alex was excellent, as always, on the show. But frankly, if he had not been in it, I probably wouldn’t have kept watching. The show did get better after the first couple of shows, but it was always depressing and there was not enough character development in the regular cast. The woman doctor is especially cranky and unlikeable. Alex needs a better show–a return of Moonlight would be wonderful, but not likely. He has so much charisma and talent I can’t believe that they stuck him in this show.
@Andre CBS did the same thing with ‘The Unit’, and they wonder why no one is watching their network. Too bad, I really liked ‘The Unit’, and they canceled it for shows like ‘Three Rivers’ and ‘The Good Wife’
Only a matter of time before CBS greenlights ‘NCIS: Great Lakes’
Sorry, but this was a dumb premise for a show. How many times can you watch someone die, and then have their organs placed in someone else? Boy, is that going to run you out of story lines fast. Love Alex, but this show was dead in the water (excuse the pun)before it started. I see him as another PI — either undead or alive.
CSI:Pittsburgh?
Murphey, You obviously are not an organ donor or have ever watch someone you love suffer with illness that alters life completly. You remark is the most insensitve remark I have ever heard. You have no preception of what a donor family or reciepiant goes through. Your remark has offended me and I am certain all of my fellow transsplant reciepants in addition every single family who has had to make the diffucult discission to donate LIFE! This show was an excellent public awareness for organ donation. I would like to suggest that maybe before you make inappriote remarks you research organ donation and transplants if your capable to do that. Three Rivers is a tribute to all of us who have survived organ transplant and all who have chosen to give the GIFT OF LIFE!!!
Oh my gawd, people get over Moonlight – its cancelled and will not be renewed.
We don’t want to get over it. We loved Alex in this role. Personally, I think he as a Cary Grantish quality about him that could have been exploited by CBS if they would have given Moonlight a chance.
I loved Moonlight, upset when can. Also liked Three Rivers.I watch reruns of moonlight.
Would watch anything Alex O’Loughlin was in.Bring back Moonlight. Hopeful
I caught some of the show after TAR while waiting for Cold Case. Not awful, not special, not enough to keep me interested.
Three Rivers has a great cast, good writing and often ends on a positive note; I found the show refreshing and energetic. I’ll be sorry to see it go.
they had several problems with this show from premiering it against a Sunday Night football game that featured the Steelers to airing the second episode first…which may have been a stronger episode but made no sense.
What really doomed it were the characters, every doctor “played by their own rules” and bent the system to work.
Who was in charge of HR at that hospital?
I knew this would happen!
I tried, I really tried to get into his show, but I couldn’t. It did get better in recent episodes, but I agree – MOONLIGHT is ripe for resuscitation! He is such a hottie.
