A spokeswoman for Reese Witherspoon has told EW that a story which broke earlier today about the star having split with boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal is “false.” The two actors first started dating after they were both cast in the 2007 film Rendition.

To bad if it’s not true. One could have thought that Jake finally came to his senses and ending the horrible bearding relationship he has going on and be his own man again.
Sasha, just because Jake played a gay man in a movie doesn’t mean he’s gay. He’s an actor. You can’t judge an actor’s personal life by the roles he plays. I’m sure there are also gay actors who play straight roles.
Maggie, where does Sasha say she thinks Jake is gay because of a character he played? How nice of you to wave a strawman. There are many people who think Jake is gay and bearding and plenty of rumors circulating in the industry. None of it has anything to do with Brokeback Mountain.

What it does have to do with Brokeback Mtn is this- what kind of confused soul is comfortable playing a gay man in a film in the current climate, but would be too embarrassed to admit he was actually gay? How does that work, smart guy?
I have no idea whether or not Jake is gay, but I think it is entirely possible (and likely) that an actor plays a gay character, but would not admit his own homosexuality. So, Bob, this could be how it works. Many actors are considered sex symbols and although they might be comfortable with their sexuality, their publicists, agents, etc. do not want them to admit they are homosexual so they do not lose their sex symbol status. So its not that hard to imagine that an actor may have a beard despite being confident in his sexuality enough to play a homosexual character.

Unity, Maggie assumed that Sasha was saying Jake is gay because she said he was in a “bearding” relationship. Sometimes a “beard” means a closeted gay man’s girlfriend.
Also, I love Jake and Reese together. Two of my favorite actors and both seem like great people.
Karrah, I know exactly what Maggie ment and it was a strawman argument. Shasha assuming Jake is gay more than likely has nothing to do with a character of Jake’s. I’m familiar with bearding. I’m also familiar with the industry rumors that Jake and Reese’s relationship is fake.

Why do people think he is gay? Is it because you never see the two of them gropping each other in public? I think they are a cute couple. Both of them are good actors.

i guess my point is this- there doesn’t exist a reality in which homophobia is somehow accepting of supporting the career of the guy who acted (sometimes fairly explicitly) like a homosexual cowboy in love, but not of a guy who keeps to himself and joins the chorus of people in the entertainment community that come out of the closet. His making the decision to take that role doesn’t mesh with his decision to hide his apparent homosexuality, your ironclad “industry sources” (ie, some dopey blogs) aside.
And just for the record, Maggie’s comment wasn’t a “strawman” it was “someone misunderstanding what she read.” The fact of the matter is, most of these rumors started around the time he was in the movie and are, most likely, rooted in that.

Do a Google search on “Toothy Tile”. You may believe, or disbelieve, as you see fit. But, the rumors of Jake being gay predate “Brokeback”. The rumors of Reese being a beard postdate Jake no longer being seen with that cute guy he used to hang out with all the time. Do I know he’s gay or bi? No. But I’d be willing to wager hundreds on it.
If you’re so sure, why not thousands?

I honestly can’t understand how so many people think Jake is gay. I’m so sure Reese Witherspoon divorced her husband of 8 years only to spend 2 years of her life as a beard…that’s so logical. And I’m sure if Jake was gay (which he’s not) he’d have any reason to hide it considering being gay in Hollywood isn’t shunned. Why don’t you guys stop committing the Fundamental Attribution Error and actually have evidence to back up your dumb assumptions.
