People reports that Nick Lachey is set to host a new singing competition show, The Sing-Off, for NBC. The four-night series will premiere Dec. 14. Eight singing groups will compete for an Epic/Sony contract. Most striking in the age of Auto Tune, the show will require acts to perform a cappella. Lachey, a former member of 98 Degrees, notes that he previously snag a cappella in a barbershop quartet.

I’m sorry, didn’t they do this show already with another 90s boy band member, Joey Fatone? And that’s not on the air anymore so what makes them think this will work? Trying to attract some of the Glee fans to NBC I see. Fail.
To the haters…don’t want to watch? Fine! But some of us love a capella (so true in this day and age of pre-packaged auto-tuned “singers”) and I’ll be tuning in. Nice that choir/singing in groups is back “in” as I was a choir geek in high school, too.
They did a show like this a couple of years ago.
The Singing Bee!!! which is still on CMT would a different host and that!!!
Hey does this mean that every December we can expect a reality singing show With Nick Lachkey to air on NBC?
I remember the show he did with the choirs in December 2007 on NBC. Don’t know why he skipped 2008. Only it’s for four straight nights and not dragging for multiple weeks like other competitions.
I think he wants to hear singing and just is tired of the Auto Tune trend. I miss the a capella thing. Boyz II Men had some hits in the ’90s with a capella only songs along with the music filled hits they had. I don’t think it’s going to be like Glee. That’s another kind of singing with that TV series.
I love a cappella! I hope we get some fun groups with names “that sound clever at first, but get less and less funny each time you hear it.”
Way to spot a portion of that hallowed geek demographic that the other networks seem able to key in on. Anyway, time to stand in a semi-circle, blow a pitch-pipe, and sing “Buddy Holly”. Squee!
The promos for Sing Off, clearly are laden with Auto Tune, so I’m not holding my breath that this wont simply be a dance/looks/audio engineering competition.
