Will Ferrell is Hollywood’s most overpaid star, according to an annual Forbes.com study that examined the average return of investment for each dollar spent on an actor’s salary. Forbes claims that for every dollar Ferrell was paid, the comedian’s films earned $3.29 — the lowest amount among Hollywood’s 100 biggest stars. Most of the blame can be placed on Ferrell’s summer bomb, Land of the Lost, which grossed only $64.8 million worldwide, but had an estimated budget of $100 million. Below is Forbes’ list of the 10 most overpaid stars, with each actor’s average return on investment in parenthesis:
1. Will Ferrell ($3.29)
2. Ewan McGregor ($3.75)
3. Billy Bob Thornton ($4.00)
4. Eddie Murphy ($4.43)
5. Ice Cube ($4.77)
6. Tom Cruise ($7.18)
7. Drew Barrymore ($7.43)
8. Leonardo DiCaprio ($7.52)
9. Samuel L. Jackson ($8.59)
10. Jim Carrey ($8.62)

Well I find him to be funny at times and other times not. I thought Land Of The Lost was pretty funny!!!
I thought it was hilarious. I laughed my *ss off for most of the movie.
So YOU’RE the two? Thanks to you guys the rest of us can expect more of the same Hollywood rehash trash in the future. How do you sleep with yourselves?
Yeah I went and saw Land Of the Lost at a dollar theater thinking that it was going to suck, but I actually thought it was pretty funny. Of course it’s kinda dumb, but that’s how these movies are. Plus I think when you have low expectations you’ll more likely to be pleasantly surprised.
i can’t believe that Jim Carrey is number 10 he suck. he’s a one trick pony. so is Will Ferrell…….
It’s the pleat in my pants. Don’t act like you’re not impressed!
HEY MOM! CAN WE GET SOME MEATLOAF?
I never know what she’s doing in there.
hahahahahahahaha, this list makes me laugh.
I’m surprised to see Samuel Jackson on this list but then again he hasn’t done anything good lately. Will Farrell being at the top doesn’t surprise me, he hasn’t done a good movie in years ditto for Tom Cruise
I’m really surprised to see Ewan McGregor. Is he really paid all that much for what he’s been in? Or does that mean he’s been in a lot of duds?
I think the Star Wars prequels would’ve given his modest career earnings curve a steroid bump.
Aren’t they ALL overpaid in the grand scheme of things?
AGREED!
Ice Cube is still in movies?
I’m surprised Nicole Kidman ISN’T on this list. Her movies never make money and I can’t imagine she’s cheap.
LOL there’s only one woman on the list. Doesn’t surprise me – male actors always thinking they’re more than they’re worth and actually getting away with it.
And still get paid WAY more than women across the board.
They still give Eddie Murphy money to make CRAP movies?!?. He should be number 1 on this list by a mile. Vive la Quebec!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So…let me get this straight. I’ve heard Jim Carrey gets paid about $20M per film. That means his movies earn an average of over $170M. Uhh, that’s not too shabby.
I sure wouldn’t mind getting $2.29 profit for every $1.00 I put into something.
You’re not making $2.29. That one dollar is the cost of that ONE ACTOR and NOTHING else related to your movie. By contrast, for every dollar Shia LeBeouf made, his movies made $160.
you’re missing the point. The movie studio is only getting $3.29 for every dollar the pay HIM. There still is a HUGE overhead to go along with his money, it’s called the rest of the cast an crew, the production, the marketing of the movie, etc.
They aren’t making a $2.29 profit. The movie cost $100M, and it grossed $65M so they LOST $35M
When was the last time anyone in that Top 10 made a decent movie? (Actually Drew’s last two – one a TV movie, one she directed – have been pretty good) They need to pull their fingers out and deliver what people want to see rather than half-baked comedies and action movies that insult our intelligence or self-indulgent Oscar grabs.
It’s kind of ironic that Will Ferrell is the most overpaid, since his buddy Vince Vaughn was the considered the best value in Hollywood last year. Since these guys are in so many movies together, it could mean that Will needs Vaughn more than Vaughn needs Will. Or it could mean that Vaughn’s agent stinks.
