Fred Willard will join ABC’s Modern Family as a guest star, according to Fancast. The 70-year-old actor, best known for his roles in the Christopher Guest mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, will play the father of the goofy Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) in a holiday-themed episode airing Dec. 9. Willard is the latest among a series of guest stars for the comedy series, including Shelley Long, Edward Norton, Elizabeth Banks, Benjamin Bratt, and Minnie Driver.

He’s hysterical and the perfect choice for Ty Burrell’s dad. They’ll improv some very funny stuff, I’m sure! They need him on Glee as a love interest for Sue, next!
Fred Willard is 70?! I feel old now. But he is an excellent choice for Phil’s dad.
The person in casting needs an Emmy for this show. THAT’S who Phil has been reminding me of. A huge fan of the mockumentary. Best in Show is so awesome! I bet the outtakes will be hilarious!
Fred Willard+Ty Burrell=GENIUS. Was Ty Burrell also in Back to You with Fred Willard?
yes they were together on back to you, willard was the sports guy and ty was the reporter in the field, that show was funnier than grammers new show hank.
Shelly long= only funny episode this show has had, it has been so overrated. cougartown has been the only funny show of the 4 comedies.
This casting is genius.
I can’t imagine anyone better to play Phil’s father. This is brilliant.
