Television watching at an all-time high

Categories: News, Television

The Nielsen Company has found that television watching is at an all-time high in the U.S. According to Nielsen, “Americans spent four hours and 49 minutes a day on average in front of the TV,” during the 2008-2009 television season. That number is up four minutes from the 2007-2008 season, and 20 percent higher than numbers from a decade ago. Also a new record: The average amount of time a household took in television (eight hours and 21 minutes a day).

I wonder how much time is spent by the average American reading about how much TV the average American watches.

Is this good news or bad news?

This makes complete sense. We have a high rate of unemployment, a bad economy and high(er) gas prices, so people don’t want to go out and spend money. Combine that with DVR’s so TV one wants to watch can be taped and played later more efficiently than VCRs, and, poof!, you get higher overall viewership.

If viewership is so high, why are ratings so low?

Because there are about 300 channels to choose from now days, and everyone is watching something different.

That’s odd…I confess I’m usually a tv junkie, arranging my schedule around when my shows are on, but not now. I’ve never watched less tv in my life, there’s NOTHING on.
