Reeve Carney to play Spider-Man on Broadway

Categories: Music, News, Stage

The Broadway-bound Spider-Man musical has a new lead producer and a new star. Playing Peter Parker and his alter-ego in Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark will be Reeve Carney, who beat thousands of candidates to take the role. He is the lead singer of the rock band Carney, which is set to release its first album in early 2010 on Interscope Records. Carney previously acted in Snow Falling on Cedars and he worked with Spider-Man’s Broadway director Julie Taymor on her forthcoming film of The Tempest. The team behind the production also announced that Michael Cohl has come on board as lead producer, with Jeremiah J. Harris now the second producer on the show. Despite previous reports of cash flow issues, the producers said in a press statement that full financing for the show is “expected to be in place shortly.” Bono and The Edge have written music and lyrics for it; the cast also features the previously announced Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming. The musical will open in 2010 at New York’s Hilton Theatre – a rep for the show says there is no timeline yet for the opening, so it’s not yet known if it will open before the April 29 deadline for 2010 Tony Awards consideration.

As Bill Maher said, Peter Parker lives a double life, wears tights, and lives with his aunt. Do we need to make him any more stereotypically gay?

LOL! I don’t even like Bill Maher, but every once in a while, something comes out of his mouth that is just pure gold!
