'Golden Girl' Rue McClanahan recovering after bypass surgery

Rue McClanahan, 75, is “doing great” after a bypass surgery performed yesterday in New York, according to her rep, Barbara Lawrence. The Golden Girls actress first diagnosed with acute cardiac illness on Monday during a routine physical exam.

“He listened to her ticker and didn’t like what he heard,” Lawrence told EW. “But [the surgery] couldn’t have gone better. Everything went according to plan.”

McClanahan, remains in the hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery and begin shooting an undisclosed movie project in January.

GG got me through some really depressing times. It’s as fresh today as it was 25 years ago. The best comedy show ever.

      • LoveTV

Same here. It is one of the best shows to watch when you are feeling down. T

That’s right! And- we can all sing for her the song Rose and Dorothy did:

      Over There, Over There
Send the word, send the word,
      Over There…

Get well soon Rue! We love you!

I watch the reruns of the Golden Girls daily and these 4 women make me laugh and not think about all the depressing things in our society. These girls had a true friendship on the show. You can’t find mortals male or female with a friendship like the girls. Rest in peace Sophia and Dorothy. I miss your both, but I can’t let Blanche and Rose come to you yet, although they are up in years.

  • Elena

Ah Rue, my memories date back beyond the Golden Girls to All In The Family, Maude and Mama’s Family. You have grown into your years so gracefully and elegantly. I am praying for your complete recovery and will light a candle at Mass for you tomorrow.

  • Taryjo

Rue, we all need your gift of laughter. Get well and Chicago is waiting your one woman show. If you need anything – we are all here for you. You’re the best.

You will do great. Had mitral valve repaired in 8/07 and aortic valve and aortic root replaced in 8/08. Both less than a year apart. Still kicking. Chest tube removal is the worse. Good luck and God Bless. I am 57. Went home within 5 days after.

    Dear Rue,
I was saddened to hear of your sudden illness and bypass surgery. Every evening I fall to sleep with a marathon of Golden Girl episodes running on my tv. You bring daily giggles and robust gut chuckles into my daily life. For that I truly love and thank you. Your talents contributed to a series sit com that will NEVER be repeated again….you 4 gals were 4 stage and broadway actors with unlimited talent and ability to land a line in absolute perfect timing.I pray for your speedy recovery and ability to get “back in the game” and keep us entertained. May God bless you always, Rue. Love, Joyce (p.s. Please come back to the Sag Harbor, Long Island, Theater; so we can enjoy your acting talents again!)

    Get well Rue!
I just bought season 1 and 2 of Golden Girls and they made my day/week!
    Memorable GG scene:
    being held up by Santa
and blanche suggest blinding him with her beauty, dorothy grabs him, and rose grabs the gun.
Dorothy, to blanche, ‘who do you think we are ‘charlie’s angels’?
blanche, declares, ‘well, I have been told my petite figure and gorgeous looks resmemble Cheryl Ladd.’
    Quick recovery, Rue!

  • Liza

Last night I ate a cheesecake for you, Rue!

I have been able to see “Golden Girls” for the first time. Rue, I envied you for all the beautiful nightgowns and elegant robes. Being a Southerner, I admire your charm. I have seen some of your more recent photos and interviews. Frankly, you don’t look any different. Keep up the good work, I am getting your book, and most of all…stay healthy. You bring me much joy.

I am going in next week for a quadruple bypass. Somewhat nervous, but you are an inspiration. Get well soon. OK?
