During an interview on last night’s Larry King Live, Mariah Carey said that she had been a victim of abuse in the past. “Abuse has several categories,” said the singer when King asked if she had ever been in a situation similar to that of pop star Rihanna, who was assaulted by Chris Brown in February. Carey remained vague about details, but she did reveal that she had been emotionally abused by an ex-husband who had a controlling interest in her professional life at the time. The singer has previously spoken about the difficulties of her marriage to music mogul Tommy Mottolla, who launched her career in the early 90s. Carey is currently promoting a new album and her role in the movie Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire (in select theaters tomorrow).

Based on her behavior during that portion of the interview, I’d say she’s not even a little bit credible. She wasn’t looking at Larry King, but instead was glancing around the room as if looking for the right answer (as opposed to telling the truth). Having “troubles” in a marriage does not mean one is abused. Probably Tommy Mottolla didn’t like a song she wrote, but that wouldn’t get her as much attention as vague hints at an abusive relationship.
Abuse does has several categories and I did believe Mariah that she probably did endure some with her ex. It was probably verbal, emotional and controlling abuse. No reason for her to share details on the spot with Larry King. Sometimes that can be more damaging by lowering one’s self esteem/confidence. I’m glad she overcame it all made it ‘through the rain’.
Its Mariah Carey she’s so full of herself it wouldn’t hurt for her to get knocked back to reality….
there goes mariah- biting the hand that fed her (and probably smacked her) but hey, at least she got what she wanted out of it, endless fame and crappy music…
Her ‘music’ has been abusing the general public for years.
I completely believe that she was probably emotionally and verbally abused when married, but this just seems like a stunt to promote that lame bomb album of hers and vying for some award for her “Precious” turn. As if.
Why is this the bombshell people are making it out to be? Carey has spoken ad nauseum about the emotional/mental abuse inflicted on her by Tommy (he had her followed, her phones tapped & refused to let her out of their house)… this isn’t a revelation. And that people mock her or state that Mariah is “biting the hand that feeds her” is vile. So it’s okay to be abused as long as the person doing it is aiding in your career? Carey is an incredible woman & has been through a lot. If you’re gonna hate, how about ya just don’t watch the shows she’s on.
Tommy Mottola has been married to Thalia for 9 years already… I dont hear her crying out abuse… maybe Mariah just couldnt deal with a relationship with an adult at the time… hence why she married a 15 year old…
Rrright Paige… and since there were no other claims by Ike Turner’s later wives of violence & abuse, that must mean that Tina Turner is full of sh** too, right? You’re a moron.
I think Mariah was abused, but it’s so far in the past that she had to pretend like it still affects her. It’s been nearly 13 years. I would be a pretty lame person if I actually cared about something that happened that long ago (unless it was devastating, which I doubt her abuse was).
