According to The Associated Press, Sean Penn met yesterday with Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who told reporters that the actor might shoot a movie in the country. The project in question appears to be an adaptation of The Lost Steps, a 1953 novel by Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier about an American anthropologist who travels to the jungle near Venezuela’s Orinoco river. Penn’s rep could not be reached for comment.

NBC’s new medical drama Trauma will not be picked up, according to Variety. Production on the show will be halted after its 13-episode order is completed.
Screening firm sues over Ryan Jenkins case
Collective Intelligence, the firm employed by VH1 to run a background check on reality show contestant Ryan Jenkins, has launched a law suit against the company to which it outsourced the job, according to the Washington Post. Before his suicide in August the Canadian Jenkins, a contestant on Megan Wants A Millionaire, was wanted by police investigating the murder of model Jasmine Fiore. Collective Intelligence says that it doesn’t conduct criminal background checks outside the US and outsourced the job to the Canadian company Staightline International, which it is now suing because the apparent murder-suicide has caused Collective Intelligence to lose business. Straightline International declined to comment to EW.
Revamped 'Scrubs' coming to ABC on Dec. 1
ABC’s revamped version of Scrubs, which will shift to a medical school instead of a hospital, will launch on Dec. 1, Variety reports. Two original episodes will air that night, with Better Off Ted returning to the network on Dec. 8. The med school revamp of Scrubs will star returning actors John C. McGinley and Donald Faison alongside Eliza Coupe, Michael Mosley, Kerry Bishe and Dave Franco. Zach Braff will also return for several episodes.
Tony Scott to direct Chippendales founder biopic
Tony Scott is now attached to direct a film about Steve Banerjee, the man who created Chippendales, Variety reports. The project will be about the rise and fall of Banerjee, who went from gas station attendant to nightclub owner to criminal who died in prison.
'Desperate Housewives' creator extends deal with ABC
Variety reports that Marc Cherry has signed a new deal with ABC Studios, which could keep Desperate Housewives on the air through 2013. Cherry signed a two-year deal extension that will solidify his role as executive producer of Desperate Housewives for its eighth and ninth seasons. Season six is currently airing and the show’s fate may also depend on its core cast, who are only signed on through the seventh season.
Vera Farmiga, James Caan join Keanu Reeves drama
Vera Farmiga and James Caan will join Keanu Reeves in romantic comedy Henry’s Crime, according to Variety. Sacha Gervasi wrote the script and Malcolm Venville will direct. Reeves plays a kind man falsely accused of robbing a bank, and Farmiga will play his love interest. Henry’s Crime is set to shoot in upstate New York later this year.
NBC plans drama about crime-solving magician
NBC is planning a drama series about a crime-solving Las Vegas magician, Variety reports. The untitled project is written by Dan Fesman (NCIS). The story will follow a famous magician who is recruited by a law enforcement agency after he has to give up magic because of stage fright.
Anne Heche joins 'Cedar Rapids,' 'The Other Guys'
Anne Heche will take the female lead in Miguel Arteta’s Cedar Rapids, opposite Ed Helms, Variety reports. He plays an insurance agent who goes to a convention to try to save his colleagues’ jobs. Her character befriends him. Heche has also joined the cast of The Other Guys with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.
DreamWorks sings with George Gershwin biopic
DreamWorks is planning a biopic on composer George Gershwin, after buying a screenplay from Doug Wright (Memoirs of a Geisha), according to Variety. Pianist Michael Feinstein is involved as a producer.
