'To Kill a Mockingbird' star Collin Wilcox Paxton dies

Actress Collin Wilcox Paxton has died of brain cancer at the age of 74, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She was best known for playing Mayella Violet Ewell in the 1962 film To Kill A Mockingbird, but also appeared on a number of TV shows including The Twilight Zone and Columbo.

Nicole Kidman testifies on movie violence

Nicole Kidman told a House Foreign Affairs subcommitte in Washington on Wednesday that the film industry has “probably” played a bad role in its depiction of violence against women, according to the Associated Press. Kidman was appearing before the subcommittee in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women to promote the International Violence Against Women Act.

Microsoft, Google announce search deals with Twitter

Within 20 minutes of each other, search rivals Google and Bing announced developments in real-time searched linked to microblogging platform Twitter. The Microsoft-owned Bing also announced an integrated Facebook search for status updates that users have designated public. Bing’s Twitter search is live, but Google’s won’t be for at least a few weeks. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote in a blog post that “[b]ecause of our open approach there are many ways to interact with Twitter, and there will be many more to come. As we work to mature our service and platform offerings, we also hope to develop meaningful relationships with companies that share our vision of creating value for everyone involved—especially users. Whether it’s emerging startups, big companies, or people simply sharing information, we’re establishing successful partnerships. Also, it’s fun.”

Rob Hardy to direct 'Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming'

Rob Hardy will direct the sequel Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Columbus Short, who played DJ in the first film, is in talks to reprise his role. The sequel will start shooting next month in Atlanta. Hardy’s past work includes The Gospel and episodes of ER and Heroes.

Adult Swim orders pilot of 'Eagleheart'

Conan O’Brien’s production company Conaco has struck a deal with Adult Swim for a pilot order of live-action comedy Eagleheart. Variety reports that the project is about a fading action star who struggles with a low-level TV executive on a new series. Late Night veterans Michael Koman and Andrew Weinberg will write and executive produce.

Jackie Chan, Andy Lau plan kung-fu remake 'Shaolin Temple'

Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse and Fan Bingbing will star in new kung-fu project Shaolin Temple, Variety reports. Hong Kong’s Benny Chan will direct the $29 million project, a remake of the 1980s film of the same name. It will shoot later this year for a late 2010 release.

Viola Davis joins 'Funny Story,' 'Trust'

Viola Davis, Oscar nominee for Doubt, has lined up new roles in It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Trust, Variety reports. In Funny, she stars opposite Zach Galifianakis as a psychiatrist who helps a depressed 15-year-old in an adult ward. In Trust, directed by David Schwimmer, she also plays a counselor — this one who helps a family after their daughter is victimized online.

Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky develop new Showtime comedy

Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky are developing a comedy for Showtime based on Craig Chester’s memoir Why the Long Face?. Variety reports that the TV adaptation, tentatively titled Rapture, would follow 9-year-old Chester coming to terms with his homosexuality in a devoutly Christian family.
