Ricky Gervais to host 'The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards' on NBC Jan. 17, 2010
The Invention of Lying‘s Ricky Gervais has been tapped to host The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards airing Jan. 17, 2010 at 8pm ET/PT on NBC. Gervais will be the award show’s first host since 1995. “Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down,” said Gervais.
Paul Haggis quits Scientology: Reports
Filmmaker Paul Haggis (Crash) has reportedly resigned his membership in the Church of Scientology over the church’s support of California’s controversial anti-gay ballot initiative Proposition 8. Ex-Scientologist Mark Rathbun published a lengthy letter said to be penned by Haggis to Scientology representative Tommy Davis on his blog.
Reps for Haggis and Davis could not immediately be reached for comment; The Hollywood Reporter has reportedly confirmed with “a friend of Haggis” that the letter is real. Read the whole letter at Rathbun’s blog.

Ron Livingston has joined the cast of Dinner With Schmucks, a Jay Roach-directed comedy based on French film Le Dîner de Cons, Variety reports. Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are slated to star.
Madonna plans Malawi visit to break ground for new school
Madonna will visit Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, to take part in a ground-breaking ceremony for a new school she is funding there today, CNN reports. The Raising Malawi Academy for Girls will seek to improve opportunities for young women. All four of Madonna’s children reportedly accompanied her to Lilongwe, including David Banda, 4, and Chifundo “Mercy” James, 3, whom she adopted from Malawi.
NBC takes on two new shows, 'Nola Rising' and 'Ordinary People'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC is developing two new projects — Nola Rising from producer Teri Weinberg and Ordinary People from producer Scott Stuber. Nola Rising, from Medium writer Diane Ademu-John, is about a private investigator in New Orleans who can become inhabited by ghosts. Comedy Ordinary People is about an African-American married couple who manage careers with four kids.
'Ring of Roses' graphic novel coming to big screen
Spice Factory and Persistent Entertainment are planning a film adaptation of graphic novel Ring of Roses, Variety reports. The thriller is about murders committed during London’s bubonic plague.
Bravo plans sweet spinoff 'Top Chef: Just Desserts'
Bravo is planning a new Top Chef spinoff, Top Chef: Just Desserts, Variety reports. Casting will start this week for pastry chefs to join the show, which will premiere in 2010.
