'The Mortal Instruments' being adapted for film

Filed under: News and tagged:

Cassandra Clare’s fantasy trilogy The Mortal Instruments is headed to the big screen, Variety reports. Jessica Postigo will write the script, based on the novels City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass. The story follows a teenager’s search for her missing mother, taking her to a fantastical city. Unique Features partners Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, formerly of New Line, are working with Constantin Film on the project.

This series is ok but so formulaic with too many similarities too every vampire film/movie ever done. Not worthy of a movie adaptation. The main character has way too many similarities to Bella from Twilight

And the plot twist is the most ridiculous thing ever and it served no purpose except to keep two main characters apart for that anguish I can’t be with you vibe thats just so predictable and done to death.

Now A Great and Terrible Beauty would be a much better and much more original adaptation. Even Tithe would be better than this.

    • Rebecca Waronoff

Excuse me, but Clary is nothing like Bella. AT ALL. There is no comparison. Twilight sucks. It’s a horribly written book and the movie was even worse. This movie, I know will be AMAZING! This was my favorite series. Not only did Twilight have no plot, it all had teen pregnancy. You don’t see that in City of Bones do you? Twilight should have never been made into a movie… This will be the best thing in my life.

      • Jessica

THANK YOU! (not yelling) I am a fan of Twilight, but the Mortal Instruments is wayyyy better. Clary is NOTHING like Bella!

      • haily

omg so true!!! i nearly screamed my head off when I read Lupia’s comment.. besides twilight sucked.. both the movie and the book… MI is wayyyyy better.. and I think MI will become way more popular!!

      • james

yeah Bella and clary are 2 different people and i cant wait to see the movies

      • Lily

i agree this movie will rock twilight sucked

      • Jesss

        OMG Thankk You
How On Earth Can Anyone Say That Clary is Like BELLA Of All People -.-
Im A Twilight Fan But The Mortal Instruments Series Is 1000x Better & Its Not Anything Like a Flipping “Vampire Book” Cassandra Clare Has Soo Much more Talent Than Smeyer Could Ever Imagine.

Twihards Are Just Jelous Coz There Are Actually Better Books Than The S**T That Smeyer Can Write >< COz Techincally She Can't Write Worth A Darn Even Stephen King Thinks Soo ;D

If TMI Will be Made Into i Film I Will be soo Happy & Have Such A Major Hype To Go With My Harry Potter Obsession LMAO

      • Dev@ny

Well yes I agree. Clary is a self recongnized young indepent 16 year old who is not obsessed with a gay vampire and fools around with a jerk of a “werewolf”….so i think that explains it! I mean dont get me wrong…I like Twilight..to an extent, but I do agree that this triology is amazing! and hopefully this movie with be just as amazing, if we dont get a director like Catherine!!!!Hurray, omg I’m so nerdy, I have a prefect cast picked out! LOL

      • Lexi

Wow, I never in my life thought someone would compare Twilight and The City of Bones and see similarities. Sorry, but it is night and day difference.

City of Bones is way better and I think the movie is going to rock my world!

      • Heather

I love The Mortal Instruments Series, but I don’t think they should make a movie out of it because they haven’t made a good movie out of a book in ages. And ANYONE who compares Clary to Bella is a nitwit.

      • Mak-le a

I too love the Mortal Instruments Series and cannot wait for the 4th book to come out.. Just wanted to make a correction about the teen pregnacy in Twilight.. Bella was 18 years old… which is considered a legal adult..

      • Emily

So what if there was teenage pregnancy? Bella was married and she was a legal adult. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Mortal Instruments more than Twilght, but seriously, what’s teenage pregnancy compared to marrying a vampire?

      • Jennifer

I couldn’t agree with you more. The Mortal Instruments Series is by far better reading then the Twilight Series. The movie will rock. I can’t wait to see who will play Jace!!!!!

      • Lindsey

um. Twilight and the mortal instrument series are both good. Bella is however nothing like Clary. Clary is not a damsel in distress. Bella is a damsel in distress nothing against that I love both series! DONT BE HATERS! BE LOVERS!!!!!!

      • Annaleigh

Teenage pregnancy = an underage girl who suffers from an unplanned pregnancy out of wedlock.
Bella = a MARRIED ADULT who made a child with her HUSBAND.

      • Lennie

        Right on, Annaleigh!!!
seriously, although Bella was really young, she was out of high school, eighteen, and married!!! So the problem with Twilight was not that she got pregnant, but that her husband was emotionally abusive (he controlled her every move). don’t get me wrong, I LOVE twilight because its fun to read, not because it holds the secrets to a perfect relationship.
And really, if Stephanie Meyer is such a bad writer, then why does her book draw people in? it is an enthralling read, even if afterward you think WTF… so stop ragging on it, please!!
There is absolutely no comparison to MI and twilight, though. and vampire/werewolf writers do have to stick to the basics. i mean, they have to keep vampires as vampires and werewolves as werewolves. so the similarities between all vampire books is necessary, or else we would have really random extra stuff that they could do (such as sparkle in the sunlight! wth was SM thinking on that one??)
Idk if they can make a good movie out of MI though… I’m excited anyway! :)

      • Cait

i think that both series have merit. i love both series so much, i love both worlds, they both have happy endings, i love the Twilight movies as well, i would love to see Clary and Jace and Simon come to life in movie form, another book series and a set of characters i would love to see on the big screen would be The Looking Glass Wars. i’m just saying that both twilight and mortal instruments are both awesome series, and if they cast it perfectly and the script is as near as the books as they can make it, think of how many more people will read the series. i just really hope they dont have a eragon fiasco, i read the book and saw the movie and it was nothing like the book, separately the movie is good, and the book was awesome, but they dont fit together, like the twilight movies and books do, thats my opinion anyways, you can agree or disagree, just dont bash my opinion

      • Darian

omg! i have read them both and at first twilight was my favorite but now city of bones is by far the best book i hav EVER read!!! I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHO PLAYS WHO!!! so exciting!!! :D

      • Darian

ok just posted one i no but i just read cait’s and i have to agree with her! the looking glass wars should also be turned into a movie!! also im kinda of afriad because the books are always better then the movies and they said they are squeezing all three of them into one movie so they have to fit three AMAZING books inot an hour- three hour movie…i dont think thats posibly unless they do the same thing as they are doing for harry potter 7 how they are making one book into two movies! still cant wait for the movie though…did they say when it was coming out???

      • Jessica

Go Girl!!!! I like the way you think
Shadowhunters can kick a vampire’s ass anytime baby! :)

      • Brianna

Haha! Yaaa right! Mortal Instruments is wayy better. And PS i read the great and terrible beauty…. worst.book.ever.

      • Melissa

Bella & Clary are not alike at all! Did I miss something or did Bella fight demons and have angel blood? I am a fan of twilight too but I absolutlly love the world that is described in the mortal instruments and as i was reading i thought i would love to see a movie on these books! They are funny, lots of action and i love all the characters especially the love between Jace & Clary! Can’t wait to watch the movie!

      • Trissy

Well, I wouldn’t say Twilight is a horrible series. I think the books are well written, but I am not quite fond of the movies. Now, I think is absolutely absurd to argue over which is better when opinions will obviously vary. I myself think the Mortal Instruments series was actually much better. Thank god you said something to defend it. I’m so excited for the movie! I dream about Jace.. ALL THE TIME! Gah. So happy(:

    • Tess

not at all. they are nothing alike

      • Tammie

Thanks for telling me the “Fricking Ending” ……UUUUGGGGHHHH

      • nanachan707

clary’s character could only be traced back to her fanfiction version of Ginny (from HP). but that was her own interpretation of the JK rowling character and by all means hers. i think reading MI for those like me who followed her fanfics has an extra reading into it, a very interesting one. ^^

      • sommer

ok…i LOVE twilight and i LOVE MI. im really scared about the movie tho only because the twilight movies were such a dissapointment. i pray that that the actors actually kno how to act and the script stays as close to the book as humanly possible!

    • Alyssa

I think you are greatly mistaken with your comments. I have read Twilight, and Bella is a confused young woman who is drawn to a vampire. This is a strong case of forbidden love. Clary chooses to enter the world of the Shadow hunters in order to find her mother not because she is drawn to Jace. That romance develops over the course of the book, and is utterly shattered when the end up believing they are brother and sister. For the following books they struggle against their feelings, unlike the Twilight romance when the only thing standing in Bella and Edward’s way is Edward struggle, and do not resolve it until the final book. You really should get your facts straight. All Books have similarities, but that doesn’t mean you should discredit a great book. If you do not believe me read “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” and you will understand.

      • Flo

you know you just ruined the ending of the first book for those who are in the process of reading it or want to read it

      • james

        yeah flo’s got a point

      • Jeanine

Well said Alyssa… I loved the Twilight books and I love the Mortal Instrament books. I think that they are two completely different, wonderful stories. Both Cassandra Clare and Stephanie Meyer are incredible writers.

      • nanachan707

i agree. the only similarity between twilight and MI is that both are considered YA books. and there it ends. i’m a great fantasy reader and i never thought of the twilight saga as more than “romance”. MI on the other hand is urban fantasy and very good at that. i’m really looking forward to the movies and i hope they do honor to clare’s books.

      • Annaleigh

I’ve read ‘How to Read Literautre Like a Professor” and it is awful. Too opinionated for me.

      • NatashaSonya

Very well said. I was thinking the exact same thing and I’d never be able to put it into better words. I’ve read the Twilight books and the TMI books. I love both, but personally I find Cassandra’s books more interesting because of all the different factors, the action, and all of the other subplots. It’s not just straight romance, but it’s there too =)

    • amanda

yeah i agree with lupia. i liked reading the trilogy, but it was very predictable. i also agree that the a great a terrible trilogy would make for good movies as well as tithe. some of my favorites. :)

      • Dev@ny

Eww!! The Tithe, you mean the fairy books, I couldn’t even finish the first chapter it was so bad…the idea behind the writing was good, but the writing was so bad…just saying

    • Abby

Unlike Bella, Clary is an independent young woman who is strong willed and can take care of herself. FYI Lupia and whomever thinks otherwise, the Mortal Instruments series are not “vampire books”. They are in a whole different class involving Shadow Hunters with a little bit of everything else thrown in there, including magicians, werewolves, vampires, and so much more. Comparing it to Twilight is like comparing it to Underworld or Harry Potter.

However, I do agree with you about Libba Bray’s books being made into movies. A Great and Terrible Beauty would be freaking awesome… but no where near as awesome as The Mortal Instruments.

    • Dani

Are you kidding me?!?!? i’m way more excited over this movie than I am for twilight. I LOVE this book. i think Twilight is watered down and boring. I don’t get the craze over Rob pattenson or however you spell his name. City of Bones will be a phenon. i swear.

    • kherra

Oh my my my… As the others have already said, you really need to get your facts straight before making open remarks that make you look stupid. I would also like to remind everyone that A Great and Terrible Beauty had been considered as a movie, then was rejected.

      • Amanda

heheheh, XD i like how you put it. very well said

      • NatashaSonya

I personally didn’t like A Great and Terrible Beauty as much. Though it’s definitely unique I just didn’t feel for it as much =)

    • katie

I think you need to actually read the book. This series actually has a plot, unlike Twilight. The characters have true development and depth. Clary has personality. Bella does not. Meyers’s desperate attempt to make Bella relatable to average teenagers has actually made Bella have no personality at. all. I think you acutally need to read the books. You are sadly, sadly, mistaken.

    • DaniC

So did you read the books with any sort of insight or did you just dive into them expecting them to be sub-par? Considering the utter saturation of vampire-mania in our literature I would take Clare’s books over most others on the market any day. And what similarities to bella does Clary have? She’s one of the best heroines i’ve read in a while. A far cry from bella who has all the substance of overcooked pasta.

      • evelyn

        I AGREE ON WITH U

    • Bella Cambel

Clary is definitely not like Bella, and this series caught my attention. I actually may like it better than I do twilight. And to both you and Rebecca, there is no need to insult two series, that must have some talent behind them due to their fan base.

      • Kylie

I AGREE WITH YOU BELLA! i am kinda getting tired of people who bash books like the twilight series, because there is obviously something behind them if so many people connect with them. I think some people are trying too hard to be…different? so they bash twilight even though they love books in general just because everyone likes twilight.
but aside from my tirade, i think that the mortal instruments would make freaking fantastic movies, and i am very sad that a great and terrible beauty got rejected…that could have been a really beautiful movie…

      • Kendal

I totally and completely agree with you, Twilight is well worked on and writen series as well as the TMI series. People have got to stop being close minded, Did you ever think that Smeyer wrote the Characters that way on purpose? huh? No ,you didn’t.

      • jade

ok, tmi is majorly better than twilight, im a twilight fan but the only reason it did so well was the story line. no offense to stephhanie meyer but she writes like an eleven year old, no offense to any eleven year olds. but if catharine hardwicke directs the mortal instruments i will never watch it! she ruined twilight the movie and she,ll ruin this too. tmi is absolutely nothing like twilight! the only thing it is somewhat similar too is maybe wicked lovely.

    • Amber

This is a riduculous statement. I enjoyed both series, mortal instruments and twilight, though I found that mortal instruments was better written. Clary and Bella could more accurately be described as opposites as Clary is more intelligent and strong. The plot twist was essential to the entire series, not as a means of keeping the main characters apart in a depressing way, but to keep the reader involved in the whole story. If it weren’t for the overwhelming need to find out how it was all going to come together in the end, some people might not have moved on to the other books. I think that it will be an amazong movie, and am excited to see it.
As for the comment that Tithe would have been better… Well, all I can say is, this person has a very bland taste in intertainment.

      • Byron

I so agree with u. I have read both Mortal Instruments and Twilight. I have to say I enjoyed both series a lot but MI was better than Twilight on so many levels. I see both of the Twilight movies and they were great but MI will surely score much higher than Twilight as movies. MI has a more interestimg plot than Twilight because it offered something different in each book. Twilight on the other hand pretty much had the same plot in every book and in the last book the resolution was kinda of disappointing ( really no suspense at all ).

      • Amanda

agree with you, I was a fan of twilight but I am also a fan for this series. I like this series better because I think it hold my attention more. Everyone’s opinions are different, you shouldn’t bash a book that strongly. If you don’t like it..then you don’t, but others may love it. Bashing a book like lupia did is considered by me to be mean. I wonder how Cassandra Clare would feel if she heard you say things like that, probably hurt or she just wouldn’t care because many others like her series.

      • NatashaSonya

Agreed. Just plain agreed. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

    • Teenie

OMG! Is not! It’s an awesome book, and it is much different from every vampire\werewolf movie. Let me tell you this, it is way better that Twilight Saga and movies and it is definitely better that Vampire Diaries. I agree with you on a Great and Terrible Beauty, but I think they should make both into movies. That would be amazing!

    • k173

I would like to point out that, while both the mortal instruments series and twilight are novels geared towards teenagers and both happen to feature female protagonists, that is the extent of the similarities. Whilst Bella Swan is a typical example of the damsel in distress who is completely incapable of doing anything to help herself, Clary Fray portrays a smart, practical young woman who at least makes an effort to stand for herself and not lean on a male lead. Rather, the two main male characters in this series seem to gravitate towards her. Clary holds her own and keeps up with vampires, werewolves, and shadowhunters despite her many disadvantages and lack of training. I would also like to point out that the plot twist to which you referred is one that I’ve yet to run across in another book within the same writing period and genre. The mortal instruments has a plot line that has kept some of the most cunning and voracious readers I know guessing to the very end and is extremely deserving of a film adaption.

    • LISSIE

I absolutely LOVED them. I just hope that the movie is fairly close to the books. A Great and Terrible Beauty is good, but the 2nd and 3rd books in that trilogy are kinda lame. I couldn’t get all the way through The Sweet Far Thing. Too many lame details.

    • K-C

Clary? Like BELLA?! Uhm, no. The plot of the series is fantastic and beautiful.Twilight was my favourite series while I was reading it. As soon as I was done, I realized that it was just another predictable teen novel. MI was cleverly written, and everything came together perfectly. I’m psyched for the movie! And I heard A Great and Terrible Beauty is being adapted! YAY!

    • Ashley

omg. that is sooo not true. the mortal In. books are amazing & i can’t belive its going to be a movie. you are crazy if you think clary is like bella. I do hope Jace and clary find a way to be together though

    • Renee

Clary is nothing like Bella Swan at all. I love the Twilight series but I’d have to say that the Mortal Instruments Series is the best and i would love to see it become a movie.

      • nikki

Your right Clary is nothing like Bella. The MI was one of the best series i have read in a long time and would love to see it in a movie. But to have ppl compare it to Twilight is stupid. They have nothing in common

    • Janet

I disagree with Lupia…..yes the Mortal Instruments may have some similarities to Twilight but it also has some similarities to alot of other series as well. which in my opinion made it that much beter. I am a fan of Twilight the books (I hate the movies it just doesn’t give the books justice) and I am also a fan of the Mortal Instruments but not for the same reasons. I can’t choose which one I like best because agian they are very DIFFERENT! I am however excited to see what angle they will take with the movie. Though I am not expecting much because I like very few movies that come from books. My expectations of them are always far too high.

    • Stephanie

Im Sorry But Clary Is NOTHING like Bella N Twilight Was Alright The Book N The Movie I Mean Dont Get Me Wrong Im A fan And everything But Wen I read City Of Bones I Was Like”Dang!! This Is Wayyyyy… Better Then Twilight” && Throughout The Whole Book “I Was Like This Would Be An Amazinqq Movie..” && Hey They’re Makinqq This Into A Movie!!lol

    • Katie

Absolutly not this is an amazing book and twilight was horrible there are no similarities between those books and if you think she is copying off of twilight after bella your ridiculous! You know i have a crazy thought there might actually be more than one red head in the world i know its a hard cosept but its true! Plus clary can hold her own in a fight not be a little FRAGILE wimp like bella! So no the only similarities are that they’re both red heads!

    • Jess

These books are absolutly nothing like any other vampire book or film. Have you read them? The books revolve around Clary Fray and the race of Shadowhunters who hunt demons and downworlders i.e. Vampires. The twists and turns taken through the book keep you on your toes and don’t allow you to put down any of the books. Cassandra Clare is a brilliant author and this series has more right to a film than most other crappy adaptations like Twilight

    • ashley

ok one bella and clary are way different, two the plot of MI is the best thing ever, and three this is to the other people talking about Twilight, SHUT UP! i’m so tired of you’ll dising twilight, both book series and authors are amazingly AWESOME so give it a rest and Twilights and MI are two the best things that have ever happened to me. Also this movie, which i hope their making three and if not they should, is going to be so BA!

    • ebony

Uh no Clary is nothing like Bella. She isn’t whiny or weak. She is strong and independent. These books are a million times better than Twilight.

    • Horatio

You have not read The Mortal Instruments if you somehow think it is similar to Twilight. They are fantasy books, the main characters are both girls. That is where the similarities end. The Mortal Instruments sweeps the floor with all other fantasy because of its sophisticated, witty writing. Twilight has the syntactic fluency of a middle schooler’s work, and that’s a compliment. Bella is a weak and two dimensional character, while Clary is a strong well developed character. I suggest you further educate yourself in literature before you sling empty accusations and insults.

    • LilClarkie

i liked twilight, but the Mortal Instruments series was wayyyyy better. Clary is nothing AT ALL like bella. and MI isn’t a vampire book. yes, there’s vampires in it, but it is not based on vampire. you should really educate youself further on this topic if you’d like to trash it. if you have read the books, you must be seriously deranged to think these things.

    • Jo

Lubia or watever, the MI series is sooo good. Clary is nothing like Bella, Clary shows independence and strength where Bella just depends on some vampire lover. Yea I’m a Twihard-though the movie sucked- I think MI is soooo much better and will become a crazed phenomenom. It’s not another ‘vampire novel’ it incorporates all mythical creatures and Cassandra has added her flavour to make it more mysterious and creepy. The series kept me on my toes and I always wanted to know what was next! Gosh if you don’t like MI then what have you been reading under your rock. Cassandra has got a lot coming because MI is going to be the best movie out since Happy Feet

    • t@r@

if you think the mortal instuments is like twilight you dont understand books. clary is trying to save her mother and while doing so she falls in love with jace. clary is independent and doesn’t need jace to come and save her all the time unlike bella who is the clumsiest person ever. plus if bella gets hurt or is in trouble she always needs edward to save her. mortal instuments is so much better than twilight its not even funny.

    • Alice

Lupia, if you think Clary is like Bella then I should seriously question your conception of Clary. Clary is not 18 – she’s 16. Clary has red hair – not brown hair. Clary is a Shadowhunter – Bella ISN’T. Clary is strong and a very typical teenage girl, she’s a gamer for crying out loud. Bella is very closed in and apathetic. I don’t know where the hell you got that crap from, because I love both books and I’m very much looking forward to the City of Bones adaptation.

    • Tar

Did you even READ the books???? Clary is NOTHING like Bella from Twilight. I am a fan from both, so I would know. First of all, does Bella like ANIME and Magna??? NO! Does she fall in love with someone she couldn’t be with because they think their RELATED??? NO!

    • erin

hey these books are way better than twilight (sorry all twilight fans i love twilight too)i just think that they have no similarities i mean for example clary is way cooler than bella ,bella is just a real nerd and a clutz

    • Himghs

personally love the book, and dont think Clary’s anything like Bella. I do love Twilight, though, don’t get me wrong, but tmi are sooo much better.
Though also i to would loved to see A Great and Terrible Beuaty turned into a movie(Great book, for thoughs who havent read it. If you like tmi youll love Gtb) i think its more important for tmi to become one first

    • Jordan

Bella is nothing like Clary an twilight was ok but not as good as mi

    • Michelle

To some of you who think that The Mortal Instruments are filled with repeated themes placed in other books, yeah, your right, but lets see you come up with something thats as full of interest and highly recommended as The Mortal Instruments series for your first novels. And until you do, I wouldn’t criticize them…

    • linda blacker

Clary is nothing like bella, and th ebook is nothing like twilight. Just because twilight is a romantic fantasy novel everyone who doesnt have a brain thinks every other fantasy novel MUST be a bout Twilight… people Twilights a good book but dont compare it to everthing, if you read enough books youd realise that actually Twilight is similar to others, such as The vampire diaries written a DECADE before. The Mortal Instruments are worthy of being made into a film, just because YOU think it isnt doesnt mean you are right. Its a matter of opinion.

      • linda blacker

I feel better after than rant. I think everyone feels the same here, haha

    • haon

CLary is nothing like Bella.. if you think so then you should go jump off a bridge. I think they should make a movie out of TMI because in my opinion is one of the greatest series i have ever read. Twilight sucks!! i think that the movies for TMI if their made will be better than Harry Potter(Opinion-Do not be offended) i also like the Percy Jackson books and i can’t wait for those movies. I really hope they will make a movie for TMI.

    • Susan

Actually, both are very good and different. I don’t think one has to love one and hate the other. Both authors are very talented adn SMeyer opened the door for many other talented artists to have “ears” for their stories.

I love the MI series – found it and loved it. The plot twist is agonizing but very well done and keeps you guessing as to how she will rectify it. She gives great “voice” to the chareacters. I only hope the movie can do justice to Cassandra Clare’s vision.

    • Laura

Can’t believe you said that! Bella is such a whiner, all she ever does is complain about how ‘Crappy’ her life is. Clary’s so much better. Clare has a better plot, atleast there’s actually some action in her plot lines, instead of a massive build-up then…nothing >O yawn

    • emily

cassandra clare can actually write a fantasy novel. stephenie really cant. sorry.

    • Ace Ventura Pet Detective

Okay,I dont know which Twilight book you read but it deffinitely was not the same as the one I read. Bella is whiney and needy. Clary is courageous and independant. They’re are not in any way the same, actually I find Twilight wasn’t worthy to make a movie out of. Twilight was 400 pages of some high strung obsessive teenage girl talking about this hot vampire, MI had way more depth than that. There are a few love relationships in the book but its not just based on that, theres action and like an actual story plot. Also the I can’t be with you was like almost the best part, it was suspenseful, it they would have been able to be together in the story, that would have taken away the angsty romance part of the book which was a huge factor in like every second event in the story. Anyways i’m sorry I don’t agree with your opinion. I think Twilight was a huge fail, and people should get over it and Read MI. =)

    • Captain planet

Stephanie Mayer is one of the worst writers in a long time, and has created one of the worst characters of all time (BELLA SWAN) alot of people have been cashing up on tho whole vampire warewolf thing, but Cassandra Clare can actually write, to it makes it worthwhile to pick up and read a fantasy novel, you are just a douche who can’t appreciate good writing.

    • Sunkiss

I have one question have you even read the book series???

    • JoJo

I disagree with Lupia, but i think that it is terrible to keep putting down Stephenie Meyer. Stephenie Meyer and Casandra Clare have two unique writing styles. Some of you have mentioned that Stephenie Meyer writes like a teenager, but that is the point, she writes from the perspective of a teenager, and in the Host her writing style is much more sophisticated. I do believe Clary and Bella are two complete opposites and that I can’t wait to see the movie of the Mortal Instruments. By the way, to Lupia, Stephenie Meyer praises the Mortal Instruments, a quote of hers is on the cover of City of Bones, and she even once said, “Sorry Edward and Jacob, but I’m spending the weekend with Jace.”

    • lizzy

I am also a fan of both Twilight and The Mortal Instruments series. I’ve got to say, I disagree with Lupia too: a)Clary and Bella have very little in common other than the fact that they are both female. b)the Mortal Instruments series is totally worthy of a movie adaptation. c)to add to JoJo’s reply Libba Bray also said good things about the MI. Along with Holly Black. Pretty much all of my favorite authors right there! Other than Cassandra Clare obviously.d)the Twilight series had very little action in them. MI is totally loaded with action.

BTW… for those who hate Bella, she wasn’t totally, depressingly pathetic until she met Edward. Pre-Edward she was actually SOMEWHAT functional.

    • ameliabrown

These books the beautiful mortal instruments are NOTHING like twilight.

Clary is a strong girl in her own right, She fights the monsters on her own, and she pretends to make things easier on Simon, and she lost her mother, never knew who her father was and fell in love with Jace who she thought for a while was her brother

Bella is a girl who apparently cant walk without falling twice, needs vampires just to keep her alive, oh and cheats on everyone

and i am a fan of both. I prefer clary because she is nothing like Bella.

  • jay

And Clary has a lot of similarities to Bella? I don’t see any similarities. Clary isn’t your damsel in distress. She can fight on her own unlike someone I know that constantly keeps vampires and werewolves as bodyguars because she’s too fragile.

    • Teenie

Totally agree with you! I HATE BELLA, but I dislike her more in the movies. She’s such a brat. It’s retarded and she has no emotion whatsoever.

      Totally agree with you!

  • H

I just finished re-reading the series today and can’t wait for the coming fourth book. The series is a great option for readers who want something other than Twilight. I like Twilight as well, but the characters and plot lines in the Motal Instruments are more developed and intriguing. I have mixed thoughts on the movie since adaptations are generally terrible. However, I support the idea because the series deserves some attention.

    • Nicki

      there’s a fourth?
I thought it ended at City of Glass?

      • evelyn

no didn’t u know theres a forth book were Simon is the main character but every one else is there to its called City of Fallen Angels.
it comes out in 2011 any other questions?

      • evelyn

also i forgot there is another series The Infernal Devices its in the same world as the Mortal Instruments but about 150 years ago so Cassandra Clare said you’ll see some of the characters ancestors where Isabelle’s necklace came from and Magnus Bane

this story is about a girl named Tessa she finds out she is a warlock also she is lookiing for her brother ive read what its about looks very good can’t wait and it comes out b4 CoFA so something 2 look 4ward 2 in the meanwhile

  • Jessa Rowan

You complete imbecile (Lupia), not every YA book is the same as Twilight. Twilight is a series about an incompetent girl who has no idea how to act like a human being and her fairly disturbing stalker. The Mortal Instruments series (which, by the way, were most likely in progress long before Stephenie Meyer’s erotic dream inspiring her trash series) is about a girl who fights for herself.

    • ashley

I soo asgree with jessica. y is every one soo obsessed with twilight when the characters are crappy except for jacob and alice. It dosen’t even end right

      • Stephanie

ur right it doesnt end right! wen i finsished readinq breakinq dawn i was like WTF?? i hate books tht end like that

  • Seana

I have to agree with Jessa to a point. I’m a fan of both series, but Mortal Instruments has way more depth to it. For one thing Cassie spend much more time working with and sythesizing myth. For another, her perspective on the world is far different from anything Stephenie Meyer puts forth. The relationships between characters are much stronger and more realistic and the writing is simply better. If you question this, I suggest you do some googling of the sources of some of her chapter titles. The Twilight series is great entertainment and provides a wonderful sense of belonging and or nostalgia for any girl who’s grown up awkward and in love (requited or otherwise) with a “perfect” boy; the Mortal Instruments, though, have a stronger story, stronger writing, and quite frankly a more creative mind behind them.

  • padgette

Anyone know when auditions will be for this? And who they think will be cast for the series? Love the books and would absolutely love to try for the role of Clary

    • Jean

I think Alex Pettyfer would make an awesome Jace. (:

      • Stephanie

who is alex pettyfer? n i think nina debov,(or however u spell her last name, sorry,)from “vampire diaries” n “degrassi” would be good for clary

      • lizzy

Alex Pettyfer is totally perfect for Jace!!

      • ameliabrown

I can see Alex pettyfer working, but no Nina dobrev is completely different than Clary. I was thinking Olivia hallinan, or Karen Gillan?

  • I.R.

I’m psyched. The Mortal Instruments is my second favourite book series after Harry Potter (and no I’m not a teenager). For those who may start to make comparisons to Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, I say the books are quite different. I think Mortal Instruments is more intriguing and I like the author’s writing a lot more.

    • Jesss

Yessh i Agree With You & yes Harry Potter Rocks & TMI Is Also My 2nd Fav Series After HP ;D Stephenie Meyer Cant Write Books She’s CRAP & Has No Imagination What So Ever. TMI IS More Intriguing And DOES Have A Better Author Behind It!

  • sunrise

At last, the movie adaptation! I am totally excited right now. Since reading City of Bones, I’ve been expecting to see the trilogy on the silver screen. As for me, Steph and Cassie are both great authors who have their respective way of writing and telling stories so no one can’t technically compare Twilight Saga and The Mortal Instruments. Both are interesting reads and I’m looking forward to see their books in the cinemas. Yay Cassandra Clare!

  • Kristina

Dont ever compare the Mortal Instrument Series with Twilight! Twilight is good to read so later on in your life you can be all like “Yeah! I read that series!” It is also good to read because it can be the book series that made you start loving books and wanting more. On the other hand Mortal Instrument Series has much better writing. In this case it can make you love books even more that Twilight did. Cassandra Clare is a much better writer than Stephanie Meyer in my opinion. Stephenie Meyer, I think, writes like a thirteen year old girl. I would know because I am one! Even my writing is better than hers! But that’s just because I am on a college AP readin, writing, and grammar level. Cassandra Clare writes like a 30-40 year old professional writer is suppossed to write.

  • Lizzy

I am excited! People, movie directors and people who are within the industry are not stupid. They KNOW what will sell, and The Mortal Instruments WILL sell. The Mortal Instruments is nothing like Twilight. It is such a stupid comparison. It’s like comparing vegetables, they’re within the same categories, yes, but they taste different. I am extremely excited! Cassandra Clare is a genius!

    • Mari

Umm…while I agree that the series is great, I’m cautiously optimistic for this project mostly because the producers involved are actually some of the few in Hollywood who AREN’T stupid (having been involved in LOTR, they’re more likely to know how to treat the material without neutering it of all the things we love about it). Speaking as someone involved in the media industry as a creator, bad movies get made, by and large, because of producer interference.

      • Stephanie

        wat is LOTR?

      • Lara

LOTR is Lord of the Rings. I agree, the producers are trustworthy on a film based on the Mortal Instruments series. They did a great job on LOTR- the best fantasy novel-turned-film of the century! Not many films out there were able to merge teenage romance, fantasy, and adventure all at once. So i’m sure the movie will be AWESOME.
P.S. to the first comment up there… Clary is so not like Bella. Bella has no character, and if that’s what your impression is on Clary, it’s because the series was written in third person POV. Besides, I don’t remember Bella lifting a finger during one of the battles… And Clary at least tried to fight back.

  • Ruqsy

This is so exciting! The Mortal Instruments is my favorite series of all time – it’ll make an amazing film! I don’t know what some people [Lupia] think they’re talking about because Clary is nothing like damsel in distress Bella – she’s smart, independent, and strong. Anyone who compares this series to Twilight is crazy. They’re so different, there’s no comparison. Personally, I prefer Cassandra Clare to Stephenie Meyer as her story is creative, modern, and open to a broader range of readers and her writing style is descriptive and really appeals to emotions… but to each their own. A silver screen adaptation is quite an accomplishment, though, so Yay, Cassandra Clare! She deserves it! I can’t wait for the movie!

  • Crystal

I love both series, Twighlight and Mortal Instruments. I could not put either one down. I think they are compared because they are both about young girls in new fantastical worlds falling in love. Both are great in their own rights. Cassandra Clares writing is a little more in depth but no two writers styles are the same and I still love Stephanie Myer.

  • Alesha

I’m glad other people got to the clary and bella are the same, because i would have had to have a big rant here.
It seriously going to be the best movie, though i think some people may be a bit thrown with the incest possibility at the end of the first book.
And hunger games is going to be a movie too, the year these two come out will be a great year for all.
Just hope they get some better actors (ie no Kristen Stewart).

    • Crystal

I love the Hunger Games! I cannot wait for the book after Catching Fire.
All this waiting for sequels and movies is killing me!

    • Stephanie

i no i think kristen stewart cant really act.. n i might sound dumb for askinq this but um wat is hunger games??

      • Emily

the hunger games is one o f my favorite books ever next to MI. But its so different then MI and twilight. Its about a 16 year old girl living inn an apocalyptic world and has to fight to the death in something called the hunger games. Im not making it sound that good but trust me it is, it always keeps making you guess and most of the time you guess its totally different then you expected. IM not really explaining alot of what its about because i really hate knowing to much about a book before reading it always ruins the suspense to me but take my word on it this book is fantastic

  • rachael

clary is strong, UNLIKE bella. the mortal instruments is also way more detailed and has a better plot than the twilight series.
also, i wish that this was not going to be made into a movie. i have my own mental depection of what the worlds and characters look like. now it will be ruined.

  • Alyssa

I think that this is a great idea. The Mortal Instruments have everything you look for in a good book from all those mythical creature, action and adventure. There is a twist with the romance though I have never in all of my year of reading seen such a twist in love as is the case with Jace and Clary. I for one am thrilled to have the opportunity to see this on the big screen. With the proper level of attention to accuracy these movies can be the best released in years. My apologies to Harry Potter and Twilight fans, but if you real the Mortal Instruments trilogy you will understand.

    • Amy

Sorry , but do you even know what your talking about ? Give me 5 reasons how Clary is like Bella .. Clary is a girl whose mother is attacked and kidnapped by demons and taken by her ex-husband who is an evil-mastermind .. Bella’s father is a police officer .
