According to People, former Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin has lashed out against claims made by Levi Johnston, the 19-year-old father of her grandson. Johnston, who recently signed on for a nude pictorial in Playgirl, told CBS’ The Early Show that Palin used to call her son, Trig, “retarded.” (Trig has Down Syndrome). He also claimed to have more dirt on the former Alaska governor, saying “You know, I mean, if I really wanted to hurt her, I could very easily. But there’s – I’m not gonna do it.” In a statement, Palin refuted Johnston’s allegations, saying, “Trig is our ‘blessed little angel’ who knows it and is lovingly called that every day of his life.” She also warned the public against trusting Johnston, citing his upcoming Playgirl spread. “Those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention.”

What we know is who she is as a politician and a public woman. Don’t claim that you have insight into her mothering skills because you do not.

Isn’t it legit to say that the baby is retarded? I’m not as familiar with Down Syndrome as maybe I ought to be. But before it was a lame schoolyard insult, retarded had a more clinical meaning, and while I know there’s a range of functionality with Down Syndrome, isn’t there some mental retardation there? My apologies if I am wrong and have gotten this mixed up with something else. I assume Levi is just doing his best Jon Gosselining for attention by trying to bring Palin down while elevating his own fame. And I can’t STAND Sarah Palin, but I might be on her side in this case.
“Retarded” has been used as a pejorative for so many years that the negative connotation now outweighs the former technical correctness of the word. At this point, one has to be more PC about how one phrases such a condition. Here in the States, the American Association on Mental Retardation, in 2006, changed their name to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
So it’s a PC issue, then.

The context Levi says Sarah used it in – which isn’t clear in this story – was “Where’s my retarded baby?” As opposed to using it in a clinical sense.
Retarded is an out of date term that is no longer used as a means of describing a condition. As a teaching with extensive training in children with learning disabilities, I know that Mrs. Palin would have received some sort of counseling from her doctors once the baby was born (or even before) and understood the proper terminology and treatment for her son. That being said, she seems to have no grasp on the modern world or the socially accepted way of doing things, so it doesn’t surprise me that she would use such an offensive term. As a politician, and mother she should know better.
That being said, Levi is a tool, but can you blame the kid for trying to ride the fame wave as long as he can?

It’s a shame she’s being so vilified because of who she is (lets face it, she was forced into a massive minefield when her mother started in on “abstinence only education”). One has to wonder, regardless of male or female, if it will destroy your children’s happiness and essentially their lives, is running for office really worth the personal glory? Sarah Palin made her choice. She has to deal with the fallout now.

Frankly, I think Palin’s side is the one to be on in this argument. It’s obvious that Levi is just trying to keep his fifteen (or was it five?) minutes of fame going. Palin has been reasonably quiet (aside from the recent news that she’s going to be on “Oprah”) and only spoke our to protect her family. I really can’t see any half-decent mother calling their infant, Down-Syndrome-diagnosed son a “retard”; that’s simply outrageous and extremely hurtful.

Palin is all over the news in New York. There is a special election in NY to fill a Congressional seat. This seat has been been held by Republicans for over a century. Palin didn’t endorse the Republican, but rather a 3rd party candidate. Because of her endorsement, lots of other Republican wannabe future presidential candidates, and radio talk show hosts, jumped on the Palin bandwagon and endorsed the 3rd party candidate as well. The Republican candidate had been doing great in the polls, until Palin endorsed the 3rd party candidate. The Republican’s numbers went into the toilet, while the 3rd party candidate’s numbers went from the toilet to tie with the Democratic candidate. The Republican candidate was forced to drop out of the race, and threw her support to the Democrat (because she was pissed that her fellow Republicans endorsed the 3rd party candidate instead of her). So thanks to Palin, a seat that has been held by Republicans for over a century will now be held by either a Democrat or a 3rd party candidate.
The Democratic candidate has won the election in the NY Congressional race. Due to Palin’s meddling, the Republican candidate, Deedee Scozzafava, went from being the frontrunner, to being forced to drop out of the race. Palin endorced a 3rd party candidate who not only didn’t live in the district, but had no clue as to the issues important to the residents of that district. After the seat being held by a Republican for over 150 years, the seat has been won by a Democrat. The Democrats should thank Palin.

I am absolutely not a fan of Sarah Palin, I think she is a divisive and negative force in politics, and hope that she does not gain any political office in the future other than dog catcher.
