DreamWorks buys young-adult 'Wicked' book series for big screen

Tags: ,

DreamWorks has purchased a pitch to turn the Wicked series of young-adult novels, written by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie — not the Gregory Maguire book that inspired the Broadway musical — into a series of films, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Wicked series tells the story of an orphaned girl named Holly Cathers who moves in with her aunt and discovers a world of magic; siblings Aaron and Matthew Benay will write the script. According to THR, one person involved in the project described the series as “Twilight meets Wanted with witchcraft.”

frak! I was totally excited for a split second, thinking they were turning the wicked musical (based on the maguire book) into a movie. What a let down!

BOOO EW. i want a movie about gregory maguire’s wicked. and i tried to read that book in high school. i couldn’t even get through it; it was that dull.

I’ve tried to finish the book Wicked so many times. I just can’t. I did read his Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. Liked that more. So I’m hoping the film version will be more of a broadway adaptation, because that one is awesome!!

Really?! The book BEGS for a dark, brainy, Terry Gilliam film. Sadly, the inevitable movie will PROBABLY be the dumbed down musical storyline…

Ditto. Just adding my voice to the masses. Love the musical!!
