In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Moon director Chris Weitz says there has been “no official offer” for him to direct the Twilight series’ fourth film. “We’ll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct Number 4,” Weitz tells THR. “David Slade is doing a great job on the third film, and by the time that comes out, he’ll be the flavor of the moment.”
Weitz says he didn’t shoehorn more Robert Pattinson into the New Moon story just to please rabid fans. “Part of the point was that Edward was away,” Weitz says. “Readers of the book know this and appreciate it. The story is about loss and heartache; he is present as an absence. Bella is always thinking of him and affected by him. His return to the film is really powerful and made more so by not having millions of ‘back at the ranch’ scenes…There are people who would like nothing more that two hours of Rob Pattinson standing there, and I sympathize with them. But I think they’ll appreciate getting him back after the second act. We didn’t want to shoehorn him into the story.”
Continuing, Weitz told THR that he had a “really good collaboration” with author Stephenie Meyer and consulted her throughout making the film, on crucial elements such as the depiction of the Volturi headquarters in Italy.

Good on the Pattinson absence. That means more time for JACOB!!!
PS-I’m 17, not a pedophile!
Nick, I’m a 24 year old married mother of three, and I am proud to admit I have the major hots for Taylor Lautner. He’s smokin.
Well, I’m a 38 year old married mother of 1 and I have the hots for him too! I’m old enough to be his mother and I don’t care! He’s hot, period. Way better than Rob/Edward.
24 year old mother of 3?!
Hey buddy, people have kids early, fact of life. Besides, we are talking about a book series, were the heroine gets married and has a kid at 19!
More reasons why this series is ridiculous.
I just think it is wrong that women (not teens) are commenting on Taylor Lautner. If this was a young Hollywood actress that men were saying were hot, we would be condeming them. Lets think ladies!
Wow. 3 kids and married at 24? Somebody’s horny . . . And honestly, I really do not find him to be that “hot.” I think he looks like he is about 5.
I can’t stand Taylor. But even if I did think he was cute, I don’t know what that has to do with liking his character. I don’t understand people who like/dislike a character from a book based on the cuteness of the ACTOR portraying him.
I don’t like his piggy nose.
i think that if there is a cute actor portraying a character then people look at the character in the book more closely, for example i always thought that bella would end up with edward and that she was right when she said that jacob was like a brother. in the books i am team edward but in the films i am team jacob because he’s better eye-candy *drool*. btw i am 15
I don’t think he is hot at all. Cute? Yes, because he is still a CHILD.
Not only Taytay has a pug nose, he has small squinty eyes, chubby cheeks (at around his age in Harry Potter, Rob already had high cheekbones), is almost larger than high, is overworked out for his age (or any age anyway), he is short, has no personality.
I can care less if theyre hot or not … thats beyond the point .. however I want to point out .. that BD needs to be Dark! .. like I said its not meant for teens under 17 and BD is definitely Rated R! … but it is a Dark book in a way .. and I definitely think they should play with that especially at the end … this Heroine becomes a superhero! and as much of a martyr she is … Bellas charachter needs to put her foot down on the last film and have her scenes to be as hot at Robs or Taylors .. and I definitely think that Stewart would do a FANTASTIC JOB! people dont get her .. and I love this kid!!! so a bit dark … yet motivatingly shiek .. Weitz should do it! or maybe split into two directors …
I get the distinct impression that Weitz and Slade will end up pulling a “No, I INSIST the other guy do it!” type of thing when it comes to Breaking Dawn. They’ll each come off gracious by parlaying it off to someone else, but deep down they’ll be relieved that it’s someone else’s problem.
Surely I can’t be the only one who likes the first three books well enough but considers Breaking Dawn a crime against literature. I honestly think it’s borderline unfilmmable (yeah, I made up a word). The mutant demon spawn, Jacob’s “imprinting” (read: pedophilia), the lame sex cutaways, the completely anti-climatic ending, etc. I about choked when I read that Meyer thought it needed to be two films, jumping on the HP wagon. It barely has enough coherent content for one.
As far as I’m concerned, this series ends with Eclipse.
I agree. There’s no way BD needs or should be two movies. It’s a long book, but SO MUCH of it can go or can be boiled down to a scene or two (not however many chapters it was about Bella being a new vampire). As for the (anti-)climax- while I normally hate when the movie deviates from the book, I think here I’d make an exception.
Well said, Kelsey and AAR. I flew through the first three books, but found slogging through BD difficult. It ran WAAAY to long at the end with all the superfluous characters that I didn’t care about.
Agree! Though I loved the first three, BD was so ridiculously long and difficult to get through. What a let-down! Two movies?!? Ugh. Please, no. The only part I DID like – and I know you guys will hate this – was that Jacob imprinted on Renesmee. I don’t actually think it’s dirty or wrong and thought it tied his role in Bella’s life up nicely.
That said, if they insist on plundering forward with BD movie, I’d hope they’d tap Weitz’s talents – er rather, BEG him to do it. They’d need him.
I totally disagree, Breaking Dawn is by far my favorite of the series and was brilliantly written in my opinion. It covered a huge range of events and emotional changes and yet Stephenie Meyer was able to do it all so fluidly and bring all parts of the story to a satisfying culmination. It will be a shame to have all of that talent butchered and watered down to much. I hope they bring it to film and leave it as much intact as possible.
Spoiler- obviously I HATED the demon spawn!! That’s exactly what I pictured- this disgusting thing trying to survive inside Bella. Ugh. And yes, I felt like I had all this foreplay and no delivery at the end. I was very disappointing. I would think they would have to change it for a blockbuster movie.
I agree that BD was my favorite of the books.
I love BD, but eclipse is my favorite. Ilove edward. he’s my favorite.
um…have you read Harry Potter? That’s how a real series ends. Meyer’s was not satisfactory–it was a cop-out.
I hardly call standing around in a meadow protected by a bubble a satisfying culmination. It was just plain boring.
LC … I definitely Agree with you!!
Nice to have someone that love BD and meyers decision to write the ending that way
I can’t believe people think any of these books are “brilliantly written.” Yes, the stories are very compelling, but where was her editor? There are SO many typos, it’s inexcusable. And the overuse of the word “chagrin” made me want to bite someone.
“Mutant Demon Spawn” Bahahahahahaha ….Here, here.
I totally agree. The last book was so badly written I could barely get to the end of it. Ugh.
I agree. Most likely both directors will stay far away from Breaking Dawn. Unless one of them completely rewrites the story and ends it differently. I would be all for it!!
Breaking Dawn is my favorite book! And I believe the fans .. which mostly at this point target 13 years old would be okay with two films … Common … these kids WILL/WOULD watch both films of breaking dawn … However .. I am very upset with the publicity of Summit … first of all Stephenie Meyers Saga was not meant for 13 year old kids but for adults from 17 and up … and you have little kids who kind of ruin the artistic side of this literature based movies for the hot robs such as Taylor and Rob, who I sympathize for. They’re great actors and doing so much for the book and fans … but Summit ,… I mean really??!! All they want is money therefore they mistreat they’re other actors “staff” … and put so much pressure on these young actors … and by the way … I don’t think people get Breaking Dawn at all .. the mischief and the complexity of Edward and Bella is something they should consider … I mean … DAMN .. you people piss me off … probably because youre too young to be reading this book, maturity? maybe … but the point is … is that Edward and Bella stay together … the hardship of that relationship is what one considers to read and grasp and Jacobs charachter is a sign of different form of love … from teenage love and admiration to passionate love and understanding … sacrafice and commitment … MAN … I love Stephenie Meyer … and I most definitely adore Weitz for his humble commitment to please the fan … and dont hate on Breaking Dawn … I wasnt so pleased at first at the ending …but later on I loved it and understood why meyer made her decisions to end that books that way …and pretty sure that teenagers when they get older an reread this saga would perhaps understand all of it. I cant wait for New MOON!!!
I def. root for 2 films for Breaking Dawn!!
If you don’t like Breaking Dawn and you did like the other books, perhaps you should re read it. It may have less action than NM/Eclipse but the changes the characters go through make it worth reading. If you can’t see the various themes, symbolism, and moral ideas that occur give it another try.
I think that Summit is waiting to see what the numbers are with “New Moon”. If “New Moon” makes enough money, then they will have a pow wow with the screen writer and have her flesh something out. Not entirely sure how “Breaking Dawn” would be filmed, but then, I’m not a filmmaker. I’m quite sure the right person will have all the ideas should Summit commit the funds to the project. The more important thing is…are all the leads going to stay? Unless they are committing now, I think it might be tough to secure Mr. Pattinson or Ms. Stewart for a shooting schedule. Whatever happens, the decision the studio makes will be based on ticket revenue and dvd sales. Until Melissa Rosenberg (the screen writer) says she’s working on something, I’ll be waiting…
The leads have already publicly stated that they’d be committed to staying for BD.
The leads want to do BD, I did read that. However, Rob has also said he has no idea when he would be able to film it and he has so many commitments all ready signed up.
From what I’ve seen so far, NM looks pretty fantastic. Also, Weitz really seems to get the series, so I wouldn’t mind if he directed BD. Maybe they’ll decide to break it into 2 movies and someone else will direct the other one.
Well he did direct one of the Harry Potter movies and seeing tose you can tell how much he is a good director.. I think he should direct BD because it has alot of things most fans want to see come to life, therefore in my personal oppinion he should direct it. Also it shouldnt be two movies, just one fans will faint before they have to wait.
That must have been the Harry Potter movie only you saw because he certainly didn’t direct any of the ones released to the rest of the world.
Weitz directed The Golden Compass and American Pie, not Harry Potter.
Nope, he did not direct any of the HP movies.
He ruined Golden Compass good and proper, though.
I don’t like the Rob absence in New Moon but accept that it’s part of the story. I’ll just be waiting with baited breath until he comes back. Plus the middle will serve for bathroom breaks and concession stand runs.
So you’re a true Twilight fan then?
Ahahhahah I agree.
TRUE FANS will wait anxiously for Edward.
As a 17 year old, I find Robert to be SO much more attractive then FAILCOB taylor lautner.
Taylor’s a teenybopper. Rob’s an actual man who’s modest.
The reason there’s no offer for Breaking Dawn is because it’s FREAKING CREEPY. Seriously. Drinking blood so that your impossible, in-utero vampire-child won’t eat you from the inside out? Really, Stephenie Meyer? And then Jacob “imprinting” on said baby – yay, child grooming! Way to rape a character that you realize is more likable than your plastic, sparkling lead. The entire series is rife with sexist, domestic abuse undertones – and is a horribly written, laughable attempt at a novel – but BD just puts the icing on the cake.
I totally disagree, Breaking Dawn is by far my favorite of the series and was brilliantly written in my opinion. It covered a huge range of events and emotional changes and yet Stephenie Meyer was able to do it all so fluidly and bring all parts of the story to a satisfying culmination. It will be a shame to have all of that talent butchered and watered down too much. I hope they bring it to film and leave it as much intact as possible.
Brilliantly written? Really?
I enjoyed the books, but i would hardly call them brilliantly written.
This is the second time you’ve posted this!
Really? I hope when my daughter has sex for the first time and finds her self “pleasantly bruised all over” she’ll know it was just PERFECT. Beautiful love story, excellent message for girls: “I love you, Bella, just the way you are!” I mean, “Except for now, when you’re just like me, and have no more family and friends. You’re perfect now that you’ve totally changed who you are to become one of my clan. You’re happier now aren’t you? Now you’re beautiful and dead, but with a hot guy–what girl could want more?
I completely disagree. The entire series is about a guy who truly respects the woman that he loves, and would do anything for her. If she wanted him to stay away, he would. All he cares about is her happiness and her well-being.
He’s not some horny, drunk teenager with no manners, like many other young guys out there.
That being said…I didn’t like Breaking Dawn.
Even it will be a movie, it is almost impossible to obtain a pg 13 rating because of the violent material in breaking dawn thus disappointing millions of underage teenagers.
Yeah, if they want a PG-13 rating, it’s going to have to be toned down quite a bit. It’ll be no good having an R-rated movie that a big chunk of the fanbase can’t see without a parent.
Well said, MJ.
Definitely only one movie for Breaking Dawn. It would need a strong director to clean up the mess of the book – so many plotlines that no one would believe – or for that matter, stomach – two movies.
I would love to BD as a movie…I loved all the Twilight books and there definitely has to be a movie on it. Although I do have to admit that I expected more on the ending of BD. I’m hoping Meyer won’t leave us at that and make at least one more book to tell us about Renesmee. I’m looking foward to seeing BD on film and one is good for me!!!
I love the first three books of the series, and while there are certain parts of Breaking Dawn that I like, overall I didn’t enjoy the book.
If they make it into a movie, they should make only one film, that way they can alter the parts of the story that readers didn’t like.
However, if they split it into two films, they’ll have to include basically everything from the book just in order to have the movies be long enough.
One movie is fine, but two is really unnecessary, in my opinion.
if there’s only one movie for breaking dawn, since the book is a little over 700 pages, i’m sure that two hour movie is going to be wonderful……good thinking Summit….as always
Let’s be fair here. Just because it’s 700 pages long doesn’t mean that EVERYTHING in those 700 pages is critical to the story, or that it even adds anything to the story.
A lot of my friends want BD to be two films “because Harry Potter’s doing it.” Well, sorry to bat for the other team for a sec, but Deathly Hallows is 750 pages long, and damn near everything in it is essential to understand and flesh out the plot. So it makes sense for them to make it two films. There is NOTHING in Breaking Dawn that necessitates splitting it, other than greed.
Well there is that scintilating Bella sub-plot where she tracks down that dude to get fake passports. Cant leave that out.
I don’t know why Summit hasn’t already decided whether or not BD will be made into a movie. It’s pretty obvious that NM is going to make the money, possibly more than Twilight because New Moon looks significantly better than Twilight (and I am a fan of the movie). I hope Chris Weitz is picked for Breaking Dawn; he seems to truly understand the novels and gives the fans what they want.
The new moon book turned out to be the only book in the series that I had a hard time getting through. I had to stop for a bit and leave the book alone for a whie before coming back and being able to read the rest of the book which is good because in the second book. The audince gets to see and view the other side of this love story. The jacob story!
Same here. NM was my least favorite book of the series, but it looks like it’s going to be the best movie of the series
New Moon is my favorite book of the series. I actually think that the writing is quite good. The descriptions of Bella’s pain were powerful, and had a very real, “visceral” quality to them.
Disagree how you say the other love story.
IMO, its always been about Edward and Bella INCLUDING new moon.
New Moon is just about how crazy bella is without edward, showing just HOW strong she feels for him.
Jacobs just the third wheel who’s thrown in so Renesmee can have a groom. :/
Summit, open your ears!!!
Chris Weitz for Breaking Dawn!!!!
And to add …there are too many differing opinions from the fanbase of BD. They need to stick to the book, end of story. If it is not good on screen, then it’s not. Let’s move on.
In my opinion, the story is going to have to be changed in order for it to work as a movie. I don’t think that audiences will respond well to Jacob imprinting on a baby, to Edward using his teeth to get the baby out, or to a fight that ends with nothing actually happening.
Tbh, I don’t hate BD (I don’t love it like I love the first three though)…but I still think that a lot of changes need to be made if if they want the movie to turn out well.
I thought the same thing when I first read the book (mostly the imprinting thing on a newborn). But Stephenie Meyer has made very clear in all of her book that love and eternal devotion goes way farther than physical satisfaction. (So, it’s just our dirty minds making judgment on that specific theme) Anyways, BD it’s my second favorite in the Twilight Saga, after the first book. I don’t think that they should skip the imprinting, because it’s very important in the outcome of the story, plus the c-section part it’s one of my favorites, and the last fight, well, it just showed how powerfull Bella really always was throughout the entire story/series. I hope the decide soon to make it, and make it fast.
That is the problem people can’t seem to get past, imprinting on Renesmee. Fans need to realize that Jacob imprintint on her doesn’t mean he has sexual feeling for her, it means he loves her unconditionally. Right now she is a baby, and he is there to be a big brother figure. Hasn’t anyone ever had a much older friend that has loved them since they were little…maybe in time that love can be more grown up but does that mean they loved you sexuall when you were a child? No!
As for the non fight scene, that was one of my favorite moments in the series. The tension adding up to the big fight with Volturi and then the lack of battle didn’t dissapoint me, it made me feel relieved. Stephenie Meyer made it clear that if a fight had broken out, at least one (and more than likely more than one)of the Cullens would have had to die. I don’t know about you but I couldn’t be happy with any of my favorite vampires dying. Could you?
My problem with imprinting is that it’s basically emotionally manipulating a child. Yeah, the love starts out “big brother”=like and unconditional and sweet, but the future sexual relationship is still implied. Meyer claimed that the girl (notice how it’s only the men who imprint?!) has a choice to say no, but how hard can that be when you’ve had this nurturing figure around you your entire life? And how devoted would these men be toward these CHILDREN if there wasn’t the implied promise of a future sexual relationship? There may be something beautiful about imprinting, but Meyer didn’t convey it to me.
And honestly, maybe someone DID need to die. Another reason I hate BD. Meyer showed a complete inability to make the hard choices and make people actually, you know, suffer. Conflict is at the heart of every story; no conflict, no story.
You would prefer that the readers suffer? I suppose that at the end of Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth should have just walked away from Mr. Darcy Jane Austen could have made the “hard” choice and have had these two iconic figures never end up together…then there would be suffering. Is that what you would want?
Men are NOT the only ones who imprint, Werewolves are and Leah is a werewolf so it stands to reason that she could imprint as well. What you are confusing is your obviously femenist standpoint with Stephenie Meyer’s love story. These guys are not devoted to these children for sexual desires, they are devoted to them because these supernatural forces have tied them to them. The ones the werewolves imprint on are the center of their worlds, their whole reason for existence. The guys have no choice in this matter, they are bound to love, in whatever form they can love be it brother or sexual or romance, to these girls. The girls don’t have those problems, they DO have a choice since they do not have these supernatural forces binding them to the wolves. However these forces also tie soulmates together, why would they really WANT to pull away if this guy that has been tied to them is perfect for them in every way?
I didn’t say I wanted suffering for the sake of suffering. I said, sometimes it’s necessary for characters to suffer in order to become real. It wouldn’t have made sense for Darcy and Elizabeth to not get together, because that’s where the story was going. And in that vein, it doesn’t make sense for none of the Cullens or werewolves to die or at least get injured, because, based on Meyer’s plot up to that point, that’s where the story was heading. It’s not about readers suffering. It’s about CHARACTERS who have to actually sacrifice something in order to be REAL. Rose of Sharon’s baby had to die. Holden Caulfield had to have a mental breakdown. Ahab had to die going after the whale.
Look how many characters died in Harry Potter, many of whom were LOVED dearly by readers. Does that mean that Rowling is heartless and doesn’t care about her readers? No, it means that she acknowledges the characters’ impact, but recognizes that for the sake of the story, it’s necessary for some people to die. It’s BECAUSE the characters are loved that their deaths mean so much. Killing them doesn’t diminish that. And if you loved the Cullens so much, one of them dying would lessen that love.
And you completely missed my point that “choice” in imprinting is an illusion. “Yeah, they have a choice, but why would they WANT one?” Please.
Typo.
And if you loved the Cullens so much, one of them dying WOULDN’T lessen that love.
And I’m sorry my “femenist” views offend you so much.
But there was sacrifice. Bella sacrificed her humanity. She won’t be able to see her mother again, won’t be able to be honest with her father, will alwasy have to walk cautiously within the world in order to exist in it, and if you believe Edward’s POV then she had to give up the goodness in her soul.
No killing one of the Cullens would not lessen my love for them but it would give me so much more grief. Not a good grief like after reading My Sister’s Keeper but a painful never want to pick the book again melancholy.
As for your belief that the “choice” in imprinting is illusion I could make the arguement that all choice is an illusion as my philosophy profesor would probably say but that would just talk us into circles.
The point is, if she doesn’t WANT to leave Jacob doesn’t that mean she CHOSE to stay.
Dude, when Bella spends the better part of the series begging Edward for sex and/or making her a vampire, I have a hard time believing that she felt she really sacrificed anything. But that’s just me.
And I’m sorry that you’re so embedded in these books (which for me have always been less quality literature, more guilty pleasure) that killing a character would put you in a depression.
Like I said below, we’ll agree to disagree on imprinting. You can continue to see it as sweet and loving, and I’ll continue to see it as emotionally manipulative. I think that’s fair.
I get embedded into ALL books not just the Twilight saga, most stories that have character’s dying affect me in some way. I consider it a blessing, not something to be pitied, that I love stories so much. Killing off a character would not put me into a depression, that is an overstatement, but yes killing off a beloved character would make me less likely to read the book again. I’m a happy ending sort of person, an optimist so depressing literature isn’t what I want to read in my down time, I prefer something that would lift me up.
As for Bella’s sacrifice and your belife that she didn’t actually sacrifice anything, that just means you missed the entire point of the book Eclipse where she realizes what she is giving up. She is turning her back on what makes her human which is a big step, remember how she was actually tempted to stay with Jacob because he was the “easier” choice. She wouldn’t have to sacrifice her family, her soul, her friends, or her future. The ribbon itself on the cover signified the choice, that she would have to cut her ties so to speak. Some would say that living forever while watching those you love fade away is even more painful then death, see the movie Highlander to understand what her sacrifice truly means.
Don’t get me wrong .. I have massive issues with BD. I could go all day. However, the fanbase is so divided on so many different aspects of the book that I think it would be best for everyone if they stick to the book, that way no one really has the right to complain. Nessie irritates me, I hated that they did not have a epic battle at the end, and the lack of more detailed intimacy during Isle Esme was a disappointment. But I don’t want them to make a movie specifically for ME. My opinion is not the same as everyone else’s.
Stephenie Meyer made it clear that if a fight had broken out, at least one (and more than likely more than one)of the Cullens would have had to die. I don’t know about you but I couldn’t be happy with any of my favorite vampires dying
Actually it would have been much better and I would have more respect for SM had she done so. Hell, Buffy Summers died (twice) on Buffy. She sent Angel to hell. Spike sacrificed himself for the good of mankind. Not to mention all the deaths in HP. Catherine & Heathcliff both die in Wuthering Heights. It makes the storytelling more powerful in my opinion.
Just wanna add to all that was mentioned above.
Imprinting- NO matter how you try to phrase it, is considered Pedophilia.
Second, Bella sacraficed NOTHING. She got Edward, Jacob is in her life, She got the perfect child she “never wanted”, she got the cullens, she got the wolves, heck, she even got CHARLIE.
As for Renee, she always lied to her anyways so it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.
And Bella constantly neglected her friends, so its not like she cares that they’re out.
And Someone mentioned Bella was “tempted to be with jacob cause it was easier.”
I disagree. She just wanted him in her life, in case she ever felt EMPTY again. Thats what.
Bella never was going to pick Jacob.
She never CONSIDERED him.
All she cared about was Edward, and she always KNEW she’d pick Edward.
meh, they have that little problem with the super baby to work out. If they could find a better way to do that (and maybe keep the pedophilia out too please) then they could make the movie. Weitz is a great director, but first the need a film-able movie.
i agree, they need to make breaking dawn film-able. They really need to sort out some of the stuff in that book.
