Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden convened a news conference on Sunday afternoon telling reporters evidence now shows that Richard and Mayumi Heene lied to police and news media when they reported their six-year-old son, Falcon, had been carried away inside a helium balloon. The Sheriff hopes to see charges filed against the parents for conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, false reporting to authorities, and attempting to influence a public servant. The charges could carry a wide range of penalties, including jail time. Alberden said the whole family was in on the hoax, which was intended to attract media attention to help the eccentric family secure its own reality show. The family had rehearsed its story enough to initially deceive investigators. “They put on a good show and we fell for it,” said Alberden, who doubts the couple’s young children will face criminal charges because of their ages.

THIS kind of thing should be made into a reality show called “America’s Biggest Media Whores”. After bozos and morons stage dangerous publicity stunts that cost law enforcement tens of thousands of dollars (search teams, overtime, helicopters, fuel costs, etc etc etc) they should get featured on a multi-episode arc of a show documenting how they are made to PAY FOR ALL THE COSTS they have rung up. The first week could show them going to the banks to empty all their accounts, the next week could have them cashing in their pensions and 401Ks. Week 3 could be the Social Services investigation of the family’s parenting deficiencies, followed by an episode focusing on the hearing in Family Court when the kids are taken away and put in foster care because the parents have been shown to be unfit. Then we could watch the foreclosure sale of their assets and their house. After all their assets are drained, we could see them go to court to set up a repayment schedule for the remainder and watch the judge warn them that if they miss a payment they’ll go straight to jail. I’D CALL THIS MUST-SEE TV!!!!!

Remember that it was the police who started the big media circus. The police admitted that they lied to the media when they said that they thought it was real. They said they knew it was a hoax but they played along and told the media that it’s real, and started a big search and rescue operation.

A lot of Americans don’t watch reality shows. I don’t and my family doesn’t and a vast majority of the people I know don’t. It’s the people who feel insecure about their own lives who seek drama from someone else’s, be it real or not. I rarely ever watch tv anymore except for anime and discovery channel. Its still sad that these people were so crazied for fame that they lost sight of what mattered, their family and children.

I don’t watch most Reality TV – but I also don’t blame it for people like the Heene’s. These people are selfish and put themselves before their children – as a matter of fact, I could be wrong but it seems like it is the husband who has put his agenda first and has dragged his wife and children along for the ride. CNN reported that there has been two 911 calls previously recorded and that one was a domestic violence call but in the end the wife didn’t want to press charges and they had to close the case due to insufficient evidence.

I think Shamrock is partly right. Reality TV enables eccentric but otherwise pathetic people to be cast in the limelight. The only reason it exists is because people watch it and it justifies there existence when they can laugh and look down on them from behind the screen. Hell’s Kitchen and Amazing Race are competition shows. The contestants have to show skills. They are not the same as reality shows where people don’t have to have any talent or skills, like Jon & Kate, Real World, Big Brother, Rock of Love, etc. Those shows just exploit fame whores.
Competition shows like Amazing Race, Hell’s Kitchen, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and Project Runway, require ability, skill and talent. They aren’t reality shows, but contests.
Reality shows purport to show the “real life” of people. It has made “stars” out of people like Jon & Kate, Spencer & Heidi, and a bunch of other people with no special talent. What they do have is an overwhelming desire to be famous, and are willing to degrade themselves or their families to be famous.
Reality shows offer people the prospect of fame, and possibly fortune, with little or no effort. Just be yourself and the world will love you, is the promise.
Why not take off the news while you’re at it? Afterall, it wasn’t reality shows that gave this guy the spotlight this week, it was the news media. Maybe you should think about personal responsibility instead of getting on a blame bandwagon yourself.

It’s not that people didn’t misuse their children before the days of ‘reality TV’ but that it wasn’t televised, we didn’t hear about it. Truly, since time began, some parents are going to go against the best interests of the child in an effort to make money, whether the child is cute or smart or fast or can sing well or can work twelve hour days in the mine or the field. As much as I’d love to find a reason to get rid of the reality TV and give that time back to scripted programming, this can’t be laid at the feet of the genre.

This is a tragic story. I can’t help but wonder how many others are in the wings living this type of lifestyle. If You Tube is any indication the “reality show mentality” is rampant in society today — on both sides of the camera. It’s a little early for New Year’s resolutions, but I’m starting mine today by removing reality shows from my TV watch list.

That little boy is going to feel personally responsible for whatever happens from here on out – that he couldn’t maintain the lie his brothers and parents had been able to do. His vomiting showed his conscience and heart and it IS tragic that he will carry the biggest consequences in spite of being the youngest in the family. My youngest is six as well and I can’t imagine placing that kind of pressure on a grade one student. It IS tragic for him. It will follow him the rest of his life.

Heidi-I feel a bit sorry for your 6 year old. At 5 I was playing in the car, knocked it in gear and ran over my brother putting him in the hospital for a week. Felt so horrible I ‘ran away’ under my bed. But let me put your fears to rest–I’m 43 now and I don’t think my life has been particularly ruined. Children are resliant and time passes.

I agree with KPrice children are resultant. In twenty years this kid is going to be setting in a bar with his buddies telling them about the stunt his crazy dad tried to pull back in ‘09 and how he had to hide in the attic all day till he got the all clear to come out.
It depends…if he is with people who tell him it wasn’t his fault and has parents who step up and take responsibility, then I do agree that resiliency could help this boy move forward and not carry this around. I highly doubt, unfortunately, that his parents and therefore his brothers will be able to do that. After all, if it weren’t for him, they would have gotten away with it. That’s how they view it and that’s how his young brothers probably view it, if only out of fear about what is going to happen next.
Yes, this type of reality programming is awful and I certainly don’t waste my time watching it but the only people to blame are the parents. To do that to a child, make him hide and participate in a massive lie is rephrehensible. The responsibility he will feel for his little “slip” of truth will haunt him when it is in no way his fault. I totally bought into the story when the father was initially interviewed. I thought he sounded very genuine. I feel disappointed that the family was this desperate.
I sincerely hope that Child Protective Services out there are going to do what they can to protect these kids from their parents. Parents who coerce their children into lying repeatedly in order to perpetrate a massive hoax are not acting in the best interests of their children and likely not good guardians. What is WRONG with people that it is more important to be famous than to be good parents?

CPS will definitely get involved. A prior 911 call referring to domestic violence had been dismissed due to insufficient evidence but I expect that too might be looked into again. Here is clearly a situation where a man has a god complex and has held dominion over his entire family to serve his interests. If Mayumi is willing and strong enough to separate from him CPS will likely consider that safe enough to prevent the boys from being manipulated. That said I’m not sure she is strong enough. Time will tell.
I am sorry, but as an adult woman I have to ask why everyone is saying this is because of the husband’s god complex. She called 911. She kept it up for hours. As to the abuse charge, per the police report it was based on loud voices and a slight red mark around her eye. I’m not saying nothing happened, but why on earth do we always assume it must mean the man is beating the crap out of her and forcing her to play along? Reality TV is not to blame…I watch plenty of tv, so do many of my friends….doesn’t make us go out and plan an elaborate hoax like this. Actually, it was politicians starting with Jimmy Carter, continuing under Bill Clinton and many Democrats in congress who forced the banks to make those loans. When the banks told them it couldn’t be sustained because it would cause huge problems, they were threatened by Clinton’s justice department. Authorities need to get those boys out of that house. Falcon’s slipup on Larry King will be the cause of verbal and potentially physical abuse from that wackjob father for years to come. He will be blamed for screwing up that family’s plan to become reality stars. I really worry about their welfare…please get those boys out of that home.

CPS will also be involved because there were 2 previous 911 calls made – 1 made by a child (not identified) which was a hang up and another made to report domestic violence. It was considered suspicious but they could not prosecute the husband due to insufficient evidence. Now those situations will be re: investigated believe me.
Oh yes, there is also a youtube video of the 3 boys singing a rap song and they are swearing, using other kinds of inappropriate words, etc. The video was clearly orchestrated by Mr. Heene. He said he did the video to get his kids noticed and encouraged to keep working on their music. He saw nothing wrong with coaching them to say the things they said. The N word, a P word (referring to peeing) and two types of F words were used repeatedly. He wants to become famous at all costs. I’m surprised he hasn’t pursued acting for them a la Macauley Culkin’s dad.
I agree. If the parents could commit emotional abuse, by TEACHING the children how to lie to all kinds of people: police, media, etc, it’s not all that far-fetched to believe that if the father was angry over his missed ‘opportunity’ for fame, he would take it out on the kids.
This is a prime example of why the terrorists hate us and try to kill us. You know what, I’m on their side.

It’s not Hamlet tragic, as in no one needs to die, but to deny that the kid has been wronged by this is nothing less than inane.
It’s a semantic differentiation, but it’s an important one. The kid is a victim here – “bounce back” or not.
Shamrock, grow up. He’ll bounce back because he’s 6?! My parents were killed when I was 5; I didn’t bounce back. I was abused for years after; I didn’t bounce back. Granted he’s not as traumatized as I was but make no mistake, he was/is traumatized. Know of which you speak before you speak.

Any one could tell from the flight of the balloon that no one was on it. There was no weight pulling the ballon down. Why haven’t pilots and other flight people spoken to the erratic balloon behavior.
They should be made to pay for what ever costs were incurred by this hoax. Why should tax payers foot the bill for their sick idea of a prank.
I saw these crazies when they were on that episode of “Wife Swap”, and they are some strange characters to say the least. The guy is a fruitcake, yelling and jumping around all the time, telling his kids that they don’t have to go by any rules at all, and basically letting them run things the way that they want to. And, yes, he did appear to have quite the temper. But, his wife didn’t seem much better. She was just as odd as he was. She had a temper as well, and seemed like she pretty much went along with everything he said. And the kids all seemed to lack any discipline or manners. The funny thing is when I first saw this report on the news and saw the balloon flying through the air and they were talking about the boy’s dad being a science buff and making it and other inventions, I though to myself, “Huh, I bet it’s those weirdos from Wife Swap”, and lo and behold it was.
The parents should have to pay for all the efforts to find their son and the charges should definately be pressed. Child Protective Services should also really check into this. Imagine the way the dad is going to treat this kid from now on for letting it slip on national TV that this was “for the show”. I think all of them need some counseling and the dad definately needs a psychiatric evaluation. Let’s just hope no network is dumb enough to ever give him a show. That would just reward him for this dumb fiasco.
Anyone who has ever been a parent will swear to you that that child will suffer immensely for this over the years – the Heenes are a great example of people who should have never reproduced.
Reality TV is a ridiculous mess, and it’s not just an American one. There are a few excellent shows, however – there’s no way I’m going to stop watching the Amazing Race!

I feel sorry for you. I don’t know who you are, what relative of these people or whatever, but I can guarantee you this boy will remember this long after the rest of us have forgotten. He was so stressed by having to lie he vomited twice on national television. He has been questioned and requestioned by newspeople and authorities, and he probably feels that he got his whole family in trouble. He IS suffering. I’m guessing you aren’t a parent. If I’m wrong, I hope you aren’t so cavalier with your own children’s feelings.
What world do you live in Shamrock? Do you really think kids are going to let any of these kids forget what’s happened these past few days? You are either an insufferable bully or know nothing of children. Not only do I know personally how events that occurred when you’re young continue to affect your life but I have 2 children so I know how children interact with each other. This will follow Falcon through his childhood.

Did you notice how during the first interview, after the boy spilled the beans and started getting sick, the mother just sat there as the kid ran off to the bathroom, and the reporter asked her if she wanted to go with him> the mother said “Can I”. Get these poor kids out!
