'SYTYCD' judge Nigel Lythgoe wishes Mia Michaels 'all the best'

Tags:

Responding to the news that choreographer Mia Michaels tweeted her exit from So You Think You Can Dance, the show’s judge/executive producer Nigel Lythgoe issued the following statement: “We are thrilled to have given a talent such as Mia Michaels a platform to create Emmy Award-winning choreography. During the auditions this season she has helped choose the best, most diverse top 20 we have ever had. She knows that she is always welcome to return later this season or next.  She’s chosen to move on to new challenges and we will continue to support her and wish her all the best.”

I’m sad to see her go because some of her choreography has been my favorite on the show, i.e. the addiction piece last season. But ultimately I’m glad that she is moving on. Maybe it will help her creatively in the future. Best of luck to you, Mia.

    • dawnomite

Agreed; the addiction piece involved zero props (in reference to comments below about gimmicks) and was absolutely phenomenal.

      • D

Every time I watched it, I cried. Genius.

  • kristy

She was so good on SYTYCD. She will be missed.

  • Dhppy

She may have come across as bipolar, but she was the best choreographer the show had. Does this mean more Tyce numbers? Because, I can’t sit through that.

    • Martin

      No Tyce! Less Tyce

    • JP

I hope no more tyce numbers, he doesn’t know how bad he is.

    • Eric Henwood-Greer

Tyce is ok jazz/contemporary (I thought the “cancer dance” was overated but good) and he knows his stuff–for the auditions this week he basically gave the girls the famous Bob Fosse choreography for a Sweet Charity routine.

But his Broadway stuff SUCKS. And I LOVE Braodway–it’s prob my big dance love. He basically takes a well known dance routine (something like Fosse’s Steam Heat) and then does his own crap version. Watching SYTYCDCanada has made me realize that Broadway numbers on the show, without Tyce can be MUCH better… lol

“Cancer Dance” overrated but good? You shouldn’t even comment on this subject, especially when you use the words cancer and overrated in the same sentence.

Then you have the audacity to criticize someone for putting a new twist on a well known dance routine. Where the hell do you think new forms of dance come from? Certainly not from a critical person that makes fun of someone trying to bring attention to cancer awareness.

Let’s also not forget to mention your poor taste in using all caps and that you fail miserably in using proper etiquette and punctuation.

Now how does that feel? If you can’t say anything nice about anyone or anything, shut that hole in your face and do something positive for society… Don’t procreate!

      • NowayJose

Just to make sure no one is confused, it was not called a “Cancer Dance” by Mia Michaels. The proper and professional title was “This Woman’s Work.”

      • NowayJose

I’d really like to see how this is “overrated” in any aspect. Just the very notion reveals that you “Eric Henwood-Greer” has absolutely no feelings and is cold at heart.

Watch the video for yourself. Not a dry eye in the audience. Even Nigel was weeping and had his back turned from camera view during most of the judges opinions.

Once again Eric, do not procreate!

      • NowayJose

This piece was by Tyce DiOrio, not Mia Michaels. Yet another reason for people like “Eric” to not even comment or procreate.

      • NowayJose

Stay on the subject people. Mia Michaels. Not Tyce, not Adam, not Travis. If you want to express opinions about those people, open a new post concerning those people.

        Higher Quality version:

  • rooly

Did she quit because Adam shankman was made regular?

    • NowayJose

Adam Shankman was made a regular because the spot was open and needed filled. Didn’t anyone read the statement that was made? Go back and re-read it before you come to conclusions.

  • Jerome

She wanted Shankman’s gig clearly and is ticked she didn’t get it.

    • Heidi

No no no she did not want Adam’s gig AT ALL. She needs to be creative and would have been miserable sitting and judging without the ability to also choreograph.

  • leenie

Paula Abdul coming on as choreographer, anyone?

    • Renee

      That would be interesting…

  • jules

She can be such a beeyotch (she was unforgivable to Danny, Jessica, Brandon and Evan, for starters) and so much of her choreography looks alike… Yeah, let’s get Stacey Tookey from SYTYCD Canada, and nobody will miss Mia at all. I think her ego is way too big to share a panel with three other people.

    • hobo’s dique cheese

Well at least someone feels the way I do. Buh bye.

    • jenks

I could not agree more. I liked some of her pieces, but a lot of it was way over the top with gimmicks (rose petals, beds, doorways — she should have stopped with the park bench). And she had started acting like it was a show about her choreography, not the dancers. So long and good luck, Mia.

    • Tatiana

Definitely agree with these comments. I was getting sick of her big head. Let’s get new choreographers in!

    • Q

I disagree because I love Mia’s work, but agree that I look forward to seeing more of Tookie and also mandi moore.

    • NowayJose

Um, Stacy is part of SYTYCD. Whether in Canada, the US or in Europe. It’s all under one umbrella company.

Do you even watch the show? She IS on SYTYCD USA.

God, another person that has nothing better to do than run their mouth about nothing. Take my advise that I gave another person in this column… Do something positive for society… Don’t procreate!

  • Nick T

NOOOOO! She was the best reason for the show. I looked foward to all her routines. I suppose I still have Wade Robson, but he’s no Mia… :(

    • jenks

True. He’s infinitely more creative and fun.

      • jennie

Wade is the best and i have been fortunate to dance a piece choreographed from him when he was 1st establishing himself as dancer turned choreographer i hope we see more of him this season

  • hobo’s dique cheese

Glad to see her go. They let her get away with too many bad things. “I want to stab you”. Her torture of Brandon. I hope she finds her way being born again, but stay away from me.

    • Carina

that’s just the thing: Mia is on record as being upset about the editing of her interactions with Brandon last season. Apparently, his eye rolls and other disrespectful behavior were edited out of the shots, just leaving her reaction.

I for one figured that if she was crushing Brandon, he deserved it.

      • Locklky

        Uh, not likely.

    • D

I find it a bit surprising that she has become born again. Maybe she’ll be choreographing liturgical dance.

      • Heidi

where has Mia talked about being ‘born again’?

    • to Carina

He may have rolled his eyes but those words came out of her mouth. And her behavior continues to be bi-polar and mean.

  • Christina

Mia has some great routines, and has been an essential piece of SYTYCD. She will be missed. But I guess this means more Stacey Tookey who has been great for SYTYCD Canada

    • Heidi

I like Stacey Tookey as well, she’s wonderful. But just to be clear, all choreographers are kinda full of themselves and tough on dancers. Get Stacey in the judges chair and she might be just as critical.

  • Carina

She is a force of nature and I am incredibly sad to see her go. I hope she will reconsider, there’s nothing like her choreography. HUGE hole in the crew.

  • Jacob

Sad to hear Mia left, while she may be a you-know-what at times, she got the job done and I wish her the best…Good luck Mia!

  • Samantha

I say that Mia Michaels should be on Dancing with the stars in 2010.That would be great.

  • chattypatra

What? I sure didn’t see this coming. Does anybody know what her “other challenges” are going to be now that she’s moved on? Maybe now Pasha will get a chance to choreograph more.

  • Love Dave

Her choreography will be missed. Not her crazy, self-absorbed panel comments.

Whatever, just no Mandy Moore and more Wade Robson.
