Mia Michaels tweets that she's leaving 'So You Think You Can Dance'

So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Mia Michaels may be leaving the hit show after five years, according to a series of posts on her Twitter account (@MMRAW). “I AM OFFICIALLY AN ADORING FAN OF SYTYCD….THANK U FOR 5 WONDERFUL YRS,” tweeted Michaels last night. She then added, “THANKS SYTYCD AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHATS AHEAD FOR ME…LOOKOUT WORLD!!!!!”

UPDATE: The show’s judge/executive producer Nigel Lythgoe issued the following statement: “We are thrilled to have given a talent such as Mia Michaels a platform to create Emmy Award-winning choreography. During the auditions this season she has helped choose the best, most diverse top 20 we have ever had. She knows that she is always welcome to return later this season or next.  She’s chosen to move on to new challenges and we will continue to support her and wish her all the best.”

I love some of her dances. She is one of the most annoying people on the show though. Not really too upset she’s leaving.

  • nic

What? I think the show might have jumped the shark now. I think Mia is one of the most interesting parts of the show. She challenges the dancers more than any other choreographer.

    • m

Yeeeah…I think that “jumped the shark” is maybe the most over-used term ever. I don’t think people even know what it means anymore.

      • superso

i agree. it’s almost just as overused as “wait for it…’ and reading/hearing both phrases all over the place is really annoying.

      • Mariah

WORD! People just use it as a phrase to express when they don’t like what a show is doing and that’s not what it’s about at all.

      • Ace

I also don’t really know that a reality show can “jump the shark”. It can just get stale and predictable or desparate and bad.

      • Virgil’s All-Night Diner

Agreed. Let’s pull back on Jump the Shark and keep it meaningful. I agree it’s tough for a reality show to jump the shark. That would be like a singing competition hiring someone who has absolutely no background in professional singing to be a full time judge – and I don’t see that happening…

      • lorditchy

the only way SYTYCD can “jump the shark would be to get desperate and add physical challenges, immunities, and on Paula Abdul!

      • lorditchy

        and or not and on

      • B Rog

“Jump The Shark” refers to an episode of “Happy Days” in which the Fonz jumps over a shark while water skiing. It just means that the show has just gotten absurd in their attempts to entertain. Totally overused though.

      • Dream Out Loud

I don’t think they’ve jumped the shark. I think Mia ate the shark. she’s a house!

    • Em

The phrase “jumped the shark” has totally jumped the shark.

  • Anon

Hope not. I look forward to her choreography more than anyone else’s. Can Tyce be done instead? He annoys the bejeesus out of me and hasn’t choreographed anything good since Season 2.

    • McCoy

I wish it were Tyce as well.

      • Anon

Tyce just won an emmy for his season four work with Will and Jessica. Which was one of the best most honest dances on the entire show ever! That dance transformed those two dancers and made them better. It is sad that someone as brilliant as Mia Michaels is leaving but give Tyce some credit. Plus broadway is meant to come off a little cheesy at times and over the top which is something he does better than most of the people on the show.

      • Anon

Forgot about the Will and Jessica piece. I’ll add that to the 2 other pieces of Tyce’s that I like. And the problems I have with his Broadway pieces have nothing to do with cheesiness and everything to do with how little interest I have in them. Also, all dancing aside, Tyce is obnoxious.

      • Aprilcot26

I like most of Tyce’s choreography but he is usually an a-hole as a judge.

      • GinaBallerina

Anon, actually Tyce was NOMINATED for an Emmy (for his Will/Jessica dance), as were several others from SYTYCD. None of them won. The winner was a dance special on another show. I looked it up but I can’t quite remember what it was called now.

      • Annie

Tyce makes me want to stop watching this show that used to be my absolute favorite thing on TV. He has no musicality, no inventiveness…his stuff all looks like it came from a dance recital in Anytown, USA. Mia was always innovative in both her concept and movement The show won’t be the same without her. At all.

    • C.J.

I can’t believe everybody is hating on Tyce. Mia was my favorite choreographer, and I am sad that she is leaving. Tyce is absolutely amazing in all the styles that he has choreographed. I especially like it when he does contemporary pieces like with Katee and Joshua in Season 4.

  • Marie

when the show was new and fresh, i really liked her, but with the growth of the show came a growth of her ego and she started to become mean. she’s a great choreographer, but she’s not the only game in town.
she’ll be missed on the show though, so good luck to her.

  • Elle

Oh no! She is the best choreographer on the show, I always get excited when I know she’ll be doing some of dances of the night. It’s always very interesting and emotional.

  • RJP

I wonder if her leaving has anything to do with Adam Shankman getting a permanent 4th judge position?

    • bfish64

I doubt it, because Mia creates dances for the contestants, she could not be a permanent 4th judge.

      • Yesenia

        Mary used to choreograph too.

      • Sienna

Yesenia–Yes, but she wasn’t a permanent judge then, and when she did choreograph she wasn’t on the judging panel.

    • Jamie B.

That was my first thought as well!

  • bfish64

She not only challenges the dancers, but also the other choreographers. Her dances are the ones that move people. The other contemporary choreographers have less dimension. Sonja is only strange and angry (a little narcissistic for me), Mandy Moore is stuck in the 80’s and is more style over substance. The others seem to stick to only love topics. Mia takes on many dimensions of life so honestly.. The show will not be the same without her. Please don’t leave!!!

    • JenR

bfish64, I so agree with all of those comments! And, with Mia gone, we may be stuck with more of Tyce Dioro’s rip-off choreography.

  • MaryK

Well, somebody’s gotta say it – Aaaamaaaazing!

  • seeyameeya

maybe if she stopped calling contestants stupid, dumb, throwing pens at them, calling them a-holes, she would be more well-liked. that bench routine is mad overhyped. don’t let the door hit your bad hair on the way out.

    • Em

I love her hair. But I do sometimes wince at her words. “I want to cut you up?” Yikes…

      • Heidi

She just got a great buzz cut and its a golden blonde buzz. It looks feminine and suits her very well!

    • Coyote

I don’t think she cares if she’s well-liked. You sound a little insecure.

    • 3 left feet

Don’t forget “wanting to stab” little Chelsie Hightower. Honestly, I won’t miss Mia. She was cruel and mean.

  • Susan

maybe she recognizes that she needs a well deserved break.

  • S dizzle

The dances she choreography’s are very intriguing but she is very obnoxious and irritating.

  • palais

Mia was up in Canada the past two weeks judging and choreographing for So You Think You Can Dance Canada and did a gorgeous routine for our Top 3 girls on Tuesday night. I adore her dances, and she will be missed.

  • jools

Oh whatever. It’s probably just contract negotiation time.

  • SashaC

I’m crushed. I look forward to Mia’s routines more than any other. So do the dancers. I’m sure they will be devastated if this is true.

  • Joe R

The “Gravity” addiction dance was my favorite dance of the entire series.

    • I totally agree!!

My favorite of all time! That was truly her best work. It wasn’t about props or anything else. It was just the most raw, intense dance I’ve ever seen. THAT one deserve an Emmy nom for sure. But sadly I have on GREAT authority, that she’s out of there for sure. I guess she thinks she’s bigger than the show now.

    • Josie

I have to agree with you! The addiction dance was amazing!
