Variety is reporting that Chris Pine (Star Trek) has entered talks with Paramount Pictures to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a redux of the movie franchise that was spun from the Tom Clancy novels. Pine, who played James T. Kirk in Star Trek, would be the fourth actor to play the role of Jack Ryan; Alec Baldwin originated the character in The Hunt For Red October; Harrison Ford took it over for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, and Ben Affleck played Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. The latest reboot is from producers Loreno di Bonaventura and Mace Neufold with a script draft is from Hossein Amini. It’s unclear whether Pine would make another Trek before assuming the role of Jack Ryan.

This is awesome news! Certainly better than that abomination of a movie with Ben Affleck. What was it… The Sum of All Suckfests?
LOL!
I’ve enjoyed the Jack Ryan pictures, Chris Pine seems like a pretty good choice (especially for a reboot).
Sounds good! Just make the next Trek first, please….
Good choice.
I absolutely adore Chris Pine, so any movie with him is on my must see list. Add Jack Ryan to the mix…and it’s as good as gold!
Meh, the Jack Ryan saga is a bit stale.. especially after how great the Bourne movies were. Pine could be do better stuff.
I don’t see where you draw a comparison, being as how one’s about an amnesiac super-soldier and the other’s about a political academic/historian with a military background. The only similarity between the two stories and characters is the CIA presence. The Ryan films are really uneven in quality, but I recently re-read the books up to Executive Orders…I forgot just how enjoyable and solid they are (then again, I also find Cold War politics fascinating, which is not an interest most of my 20something peers share. Must be the Russian blood.
). A new film could great fun as long as they maintain Ryan’s basic character. To me, character consistency is what really makes Clancy’s books work where other similar books fail.
I. LOVE. CHRIS. PINE. I think he’s great. He’s the only reason why I watched Star Trek, and I really enjoyed the movie and his hotness. I’ve never seen a Jack Ryan movie (gasp), but looks like I will be if he’ll be in it!
Why don’t they get an adult instead of a kid?
Chris Pine is 29 and will be 30 next year (assumingly when they would start filming). How old does one need to be before he is considered a man?
I was thinking the same thing. Every time I read the Clancy novels I think of an older Ryan, like the Harrison Ford version. But then again, maybe I’m just messed up by Afflec’s lameness.
EXCELLENT CHOICE!!!
Another Jack Ryan reboot? Lame. I do like Pine though—but I dont think this is necessary.
Yes yes yes!!!!
Love the Jack Ryan films!!! Chris is a great choice! I think he should tackle it after Trek 2, then we can see it in the fall/winter of 2011.
Oh lord but he’s hot. I would watch anything he was in.
Looks like the Jack Ryan character going to be like Doctor Who .. what with all the actor changes.
YAY for PINE!!!!!!
(YUM)
He could be the sexiest Jack Ryan yet…. Go Pine, Go!
I really would like to see Pine establish himself as a versatile actor. His career choices are turning out to be very Shia LaBeouf-esque – start out with action thrill rides (which, given TREK, he’s FANTASTIC at), then go on to deep dramas.
ilove chris pine…he will be a good jack ryan
Baldwin kicked ass as Jack Ryan but I’d like to see Chris Pine’s take; he’s got some chops.
Oh God yes! Chris Pine could play Austin Powers and I would watch it.
I want to see a reboot of the alex cross novels that more closely resemble the books. Instead of the amazing morgan freeman, put in a younger actor who is really talented. Like Jamee Foxx or Will Smith. Then the romances won’t appear to be creepy, which is why they didn’t do them in Kiss the Girls or Along came a Spider. I could see Foxx playing Alex Cross and for those of you who have read the books, I could see Will Smith as Sampson. I think this would be an awesome series of films if it were directed well.
Oh and I think that as good as Pine is, Harrison Ford will always be the only Jack Ryan to me.
I agree with you actors for Alex Cross. Going to be hard to top Freeman’s analytical ability though.
Sorry – Jack Ryan is and always will be Harrison Ford.
I agree with you 100%.
I have always thought the Vince Flynn novels with his agent, Mitch Rapp, would make a good series and had recently been sorta picturing Pine in my head as that character when I read them
I can’t wait until they make Executive Orders as a movie. I don’t know if Chris Pine is old enough for that, though. (It’s the one where Jack Ryan becomes President.) But he’s a very good actor and would make a great CIA-era Ryan.
Hey why not. He was great as Kirk, and if there’s one thing that needs retooling it’s the Jack Ryan Franchise. I like that it’s not all explosions and has real plots, but man what a snooze fest.
I agree with Caroline that the one and only Jack Ryan is Harrison Ford, However if there’s someone that could take over the franchise and do it justice, that would be Chris Pine.
C’mon EW, you couldn’t post a picture to go along with this story?
Good for Chris, nice to see his career progressing. I might actually see this movie because of him.
I guess I’m officially old – he seems to young to me!
EEEK – TYPO! “Too” young! Not “to” young. UGH. Sorry! Must correct…
I guess I’m officially old – he seems too young to me!
Don’t worry Em, you’re not alone in that.
As long as he does the next Trek movie first, I’m sold. He’s a really talented actor, I could see him easily fitting into the spy role
