NBC cancels 'Southland'

Tags:

NBC has canceled sophomore police drama Southland before a single episode of its second season had the chance to air, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Production was shut down on the show after six episodes, and Dateline NBC will continue to air in its place on Fridays. “I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success,” said executive producer John Wells, who also produced the network’s long-running ER. “We remain extremely proud of Southland and are actively looking for another home for the series.”

    WTF.

    • J.B.

This was one of the few good shows on NBC – this decision making is stunningly bad

    • Billy

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! This show was great, the two lead cops on the show are great actors, the only weak part of the show was the african-american detective and her love-life storyline which was boring. NBC has no other good shows besides SouthLand, Criminal Intent, and 30 Rock.

      • Jacone

Crap like Mercy stays on the air instead – no more medical shows – especially ones with supermodel nurses who know more than doctors ever could and are twice as compassionate…..please, this drivel makes me sick

    • Marcus Beynum

What in the hell is wrong with NBC who’s making the decisions crusty the clown?
That was a great show and I was eagerly waiting it’s return

  • MSR

What?… I may not have liked the show, but NBC will keep crap like Trauma and Mercy on the air but not give Southland (actually liked by the critics) even a chance to air? What is going on at NBC nowadays?

    • JBD

Mercy is a good show…great in fact. Trauma, not so much. That show should get cut. And as for Southland, I did watch it, and I thought it was pretty good, but let’s just say I was suprised it got renewed at all. It just wasn’t commercial enough. That didn’t mean I didn’t like it. It just means that I don’t think the vast majority of people did.

Okay, ‘Mercy’, ‘Trauma’, ‘Southland’. What’s the difference here? Besides one show “sucking” more.

NBC is a pathetic channel. they have NOTHING worthy of programming except for The Office & 30 Rock…

      • Delia from Detroit

No, just 30 Rock. “The Office” has jumped the shark with Pam and Jim’s wedding and that juvenile “bodily fluids” humor in the wedding episode with everyone vomiting after Pam. “The Office” is tired and is the same episode over and over: Michael is an idiot, Dwight is uptight and controlling, Jim is laid back, Pam is prim and everyone hates Toby.

  • S.O.

DAMN YOU NBC!!!!!! I even missed the season finale & they never re-aired it. You bungholes!!!

    • observant

they reaired the show in (I think) August INCLUDING the finale

    • Rhoda Beth Becker

Do we really need that profanity

      • LIva

I thought the profanity was quite funny, and apropos. I imagine S.O. typing with one hand and shaking a fist at the sky with the other.

      • ej

lol…damn or bunghole..neither one seems mildly offensive..if u are a nun..u should stay off the comment boards sister

      • KC

        LOL liva

      • S.O.

Yes, I did have 1 fist upward!

  • Kud

    what? that’s mean and cruel!

  • Chris

I figured something like this would happen. NBC has no room in the primetime lineup for *insert show here* because of the FIVE HOURS that Jay Leno takes up… Sigh

    • Ace

Yep, you are right to add Jay to the blame. They said it was “too gritty” of a show for the 9 PM hour which is pretty much exactly what I said last spring. I’m sure that’s also why Medium was sent to CBS.

    • Al

Welcome to the Jay Leno network. I don’t watch a single show on NBC anymore……

  • big package

    cool more sexy Jay Leno

    • Jamaaliver

????? Did Jay Leno write this?

  • Melissa

    Lame.

  • Scott

    Thanks Leno.
Honestly, this is why NBC is a joke of a network, with nary a hit on its hands.

    • Jason

The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes… yep, no hits. That said I’m disappointed to hear this.

      • Jessica Z

You call Heroes a hit? Really? Um, I hate to break it to you….

      • Mike

Yeah…30 Rock…not so much a hit. A critical hit maybe, but it’s one of the lowest rated shows on TV. Even The Office isn’t a total hit. I’d be willing to bet that in terms of total viewers it’s not in the top 5 of just comedies

      • sandy angie

Heroes is not considered a hit by any standard. The Office and 30 Rock are critical successes, but when was the last time they won their time periods. that’s how most would define a hit

      • Jackie

Heroes ceased to be a hit after the first season. It’s hemorrhaging viewers on an epic scale. I don’t watch 30 Rock or The Office so can’t comment on those but I was a faithful Heroes viewer – even through the dreary seaons 2 and 3. Finally took it off my dvr season pass list.

      • Stef

        Yeah those are not hits

    • AJ

Chuck is a hit, nbc just doesn’t give it the promo time it deserves.

      • Jackie

That is so true. Chuck pulls in the same ratings – or more – as Heroes and it’s in a really competitive time slot. NBC needs to step up to the plate and give it the promotion it needs and deserves.

      • MsSunidaze

I agree… Chuck is a good show. I hope it comes back but who knows. NBC might cancel it and put dancing with the stars, biggest loser, america’s got talent hybrid. Dancing with America’s bigget loser.

      • TVJeff

Chuck is far from a hit. I’m not opining on the quality of the show, but regardless of NBC’s promo push (or lack thereof), it is not a hit. Just because it has some rabid fans, you can’t call it a hit – unless those rabid fans are all Nielson households, which clearly, based on it’s ratings, they are not!

      • kristy

I agree Chuck is a hit. I love Chuck and there was a big campaign to keep it on the air but they don’t want to air it yet. What is wrong with NBC? Do they even listen to their viewers?

  • wd

thats the problem with networks these days (cbs, abc, nbc and even fox). they are too quick to pull the trigger, always in search of a quick fix. can you imagine dexter and mad men on basic tv?

    • Jessica

Couldn’t agree more! I didn’t even start watching Dexter until the 3rd season…could you imagine if it never made it past the first??

    • Mike

Its a good thing Directv is picking up the tab for Friday Night Lights.

  • LenoFan

Who cares? That show was not good. Move Leno to every hour of every day! Long live Leno!!!

    • joe

      ur an Moron………..

  • Allie Beth

    Big mistake NBC.

  • madison

WHAT? I love this show! That is not a wise move. It is way better than Trauma, which I heard costs $1 million per episode and is exactly the same as every other medical drama ever made. Way to go.

    • hannah

$1 million per episode?? hahahaha. What a waste of money. Trauma will be canceled very soon. Its not nearly as good as NBC’s hype. Southland was far better.

  • Jane

Maybe USA can pick it up? They’re typically the crime drama business now–Psych, Law and Order: CI, Burn Notice, Monk. And with Monk going off the air…

    • Krista

i actually think theres a GOOD not GREAT chance that USA might pick this show up. After all the executive producer said that they ARE looking for another place to air it and USA does have an opening..one can only hope that they actually will

      • westcoastfan

Southland is NOT a good fit for USA, which is trying to build its audience base with programs that center on odd, fun, over the top characters, not dark realistic shows.

      • Phonegirl

TNT would be a better fit for Southland.

      • Mamma Mia

I agree that TNT would be a better fit; I hope some network grabs Southland and is able to make it a winner.

      • Ace

I was thinking FX. They gave the Sheild and NipTuck nice long runs.

  • K-Dogg

    NBC = FAIL

    Shame on you, Jay Leno!

  • Arsh

Oh, what the hell? This is a great show. You cancel this but leave Heroes on air? And Jay Leno? Jeez.
