Seabiscuit director Gary Ross is in negotiations to helm the Spider-Man spinoff Venom, according to Variety. Ross, who’s currently rewriting Spider-Man 4 for Columbia Pictures, would also rewrite the Venom script. The publication also reports that the plan is to reboot the story of the symbiote villain—who did appear in Spider-Man 3—with Topher Grace’s role likely being recast.

Thank god for the likely recast. No offense to the dude, but he was horrible in Spiderman 3. And I don’t think he’d be able to carry such a big movie on his own
i enjoyed topher grace as venom. it was more the script that did no justice to venom
on the other hand Topher Grace was good as Venom in S3 but i wonder how hel looked like nowadays, last image i saw of him he looked very OLD not a good thing for the venom role, who should be devilishly goodlooking
Topher Grace sucked in Spidey 3, but then EVERYONE sucked in that awful movie. Grace was just all wrong for the part… The character of Eddie Brock didn’t look or act anything like that in the comics. Mostly though, I just don’t see the point of bringing the character back at all, especially for a movie where Venom’s the central character?? So the movie’s about the villain? And Spider-Man? How does he fit into this, or is he even in it at all? This just makes no sense. Wake me when Iron Man 2 and the next Batman movie come out.
I myself have never understood the hatred for Spiderman 3, whenever I ask someone why they hated it too much I was often met with the same bizarre response, “It had too much character development.”
I’ve never heard of TOO much character development before…like I said weird. Especially since after I saw it in theaters, the crowd I was with gave it a standing ovation. Maybe I was in a parrellel universe or something
It wasn’t really Topher Grace’s fault. He did the best he could with the s***load that was given to him. The problem was the beyond-terrible script for Spiderman 3. The writers wrote the part of Venom completely wrong (actually, they wrote the whole movie completely wrong). There was nothing Topher Grace (or any other actor they could have cast in the part) could have done to make that character any better with that terrible script.
Yeah, Topher Grace really was not right for that part, but the whole character in spiderman 3 was screwed up anyway, not so much the venom part but the Eddie Brock part. Grace looked and acted totally wrong and the script didn’t help him much. Now once he actually he became Venom he was not terrible but at that point it was to late. The whole thing was a jumble of 2 maybe 3 storylines being forced into one movie.
Now as far as a Venom movie, that could work if the backstory was more fleshed out. Venom has always seen himself as a hero. His character always consider spiderman the villain. Recasting will not be the problem for this movie but getting the script right on. You can miss a little with batman or spiderman and still bet a half way decent film. But miss at all on Venom and you are going to have a train wreck. Good luck with that
