Radar Online is reporting that former Jon & Kate Plus Eight star Jon Gosselin emptied the joint bank account he had with estranged wife Kate Gosselin, leaving just $1,000 for the mother of their eight children. A separate account designated for the children was reportedly not touched. People.com confirmed the story with an unnamed source, who said Kate plans legal action. A rep for Jon was apparently unaware of the development and had no comment.
UPDATE: Kate Gosselin will appear on NBC’s Today show on Monday to talk “about her husband’s recent actions,” according to the official Today blog.
i have never watched their show and didn’t know anything about them until they started popping up on CNN and mainstream media–but they are 2 of the most immature and petty adults i’ve ever seen. i feel really really sorry for their kids.

They don’t seem like the most immature and petty adults I’ve ever seen go through a divorce. What this looks like are people who are angry at each other and want to cause pain for each other. Sure Jon can say he didn’t want Kate to hold the money hostage, but he’s the one doing that now. These two obviously hate each other and it’s spinning out of control. That’s all fine and good when you’re in the limelight but there will be a day when they are has beens and no one is paying them to be real in public. Then they’ll realize that dignity, courtesy and integrity are expensive things to throw away.

I am not condoning either of their actions here, but I feel that it should be noted that during the “season finale” in May Jon stated that he didn’t want to continue the show at that point and Kate did. That was one of the issues that led up to the separation.
Jennifer.. I saw that as well. Now I’m not condoning Jon’s recent behavior because he’s acted like an idiot, but it should be mentioned that he wanted to stop the show last year. I kind of got the impression that he hadn’t been all that happy filming the show for a while. She was adament that they continued the show because of all the opportunities it presented for her and the children.
Kate keeps trying to play the pity card. She whines that she’s a single mother raising 8 children, and she expects all single mothers across the country to rally behind her. What these single mothers don’t get is that, Kate has a full-time nanny, a full security team, and makes much more money than the average single mother. At some point these people have to realize that Kate is not a relateable person.

Angel, I’m pretty sure that Sarah D meant that putting children through the system unnecessarily can’t possibly be a reasonable solution. With appropriate counseling (and time out of the spotlight), the kids could absolutely go back to living normal lives with their loving (but often misguided) parents.

I believe that TLC paid for their home, so there would be no mortgage payments. I would also imagine TLC is footing the bill for quite a few other things as well – they probably like the drama.

$1,000 will feed them for two or three weeks. But even if she could stretch it out to a month, what about everything else? Electricity, water, etc. is costly. Do you have kids? Every extra ‘mouth’ is a lot when it comes to the grocery budget.

This comment is not directed to the posters I have seen here so far. It is directed to the general comments I have heard overall. I find it sad and pathetic that people are discussing this in perspective to their loyalty or hatred towards one or both Gosselin parents (Jon or Kate), or in bitterness about how this will affect their ability to view the television program (not that Jon has halted filming). In my opinion, this is the first semi-responsible thing either of them has done. It is fine, albeit a bit awkward, to film impressionable children during their infancy but to continue a television program that captures the children (and their parents) during a messy divorce is crazy. All parties, especially the children, should be experiencing this part of their lives in private, with the help of counseling. It just isn’t healthy.
This is absolutely normal behavior in a divorce. The odd thing is that she didn’t think to open her own account without his name on it and move the cash out herself when the papers were filed. Ya snooze ya lose in the divorce game.

When you file for divorce that is the first thing the judge orders…neither one of them was allowed to touch the account without both of parties consent…he will likely get reamed by the court. His new attorney is a bigger idiot than he is.
That’s because the Judge had already told both of them not to take any large amount out without at least notifying the other person. Jon right now can be found in contempt of court. Check the news tomorrow because Kate’s attorney is heading back to court.

Nothing Jon did in this case was illegal. if the account was in both their names, it was most likely either/or to sign on the account, allowing either of them access to as much cash as they want, without needing the second person on the account to sign with them. if he walked into the bank and said cut me a bank draft with everything but a thousand bucks out of my account, they have to do it for him whether Kate likes it or not. What he did, though, was right at all it was a really petty, and pathetic thing to do, but there was no law breaking going on in this case so she’s kind of S.O.L. right now.
I understand where you are coming from with this, but from what I read, they were only to withdraw money from the account with each other’s permission. Jon just swiped all the cash meant for food, etc. for the family. It just seems odd that since his name has been removed from the series that he is taking all of these actions. Sad, really.

Actually what he did is completely unlawful. He violated a direct order from the Arbitration court by touching this account without consent from Kate. The only reason she still gets to use it is because she has to provide proof for every penny she removes from the account. i.e. paying bills.
He will be found in contempt of the court and ordered to return every cent he removed.
Actually…if anyone had seen Kate’s interview this morning on Today you would have gotten a better understanding of the situation. Jon & Kate had a joint account that the arbitrator has restricted their use of…they were not to touch the money without the consent of the other person. Kate, being the only mature adult in this situation, has always been the money manager of their household and was given permission to pay household bills with the money from the joint account. She had to provide documentation of each bill paid from the account. Jon has withdrawn $230,000 of the $231,000 in that account for his own personal use which is in violation of the arbitration order so Kate is going to court today to order the money to be replaced. Jon is a selfish piece of work…he is doing all of this because the show removed him from the title & limited his role. He makes me ill!

In the usual type of joint account, legally, either person can withdraw anything they want. If you want both people to have to sign, you need a special kind of joint account.
