People is reporting that David Letterman previously had a sexual relationship with another employee in the 1990s. This follows the details that emerged today about the extortion plot Letterman announced on his show last night. A former Late Show with David Letterman staffer told People that this relationship was prior to Stephanie Birkitt joining the show and was with a different female staff member. Letterman was unmarried at the time and the source told People: “He never acted inappropriate with any of the female staff.”

I’m not saying he’s a bad person…but he was still in a long-term relationship with someone. Cheating doesn’t automatically become okay just because it’s on your girlfriend not your wife.
But whatever. I don’t know why this is such a huge news story. I’m just sick of men in positions of power and prestige abusing their authority and compromising their integrity by refusing to keep it in their pants.

      Yeah, because women never cheat.

Seriously? You don’t know all the details, do you? Were you there “Gabby”? How would you possibly know that he was “abusing [his] authority and compromising [his] integrity by refusing to keep it in [his] pants.”? So, according to you, because he is famous, wealthy, and successful, he should not be allowed to have a relationship with a woman?

Hey Gabby, I see where Letterman got the name for the production company he has “Worldwide Pants”

This makes me think of something Goldie Hawn said, “Monogamy is impossible these days for both sexes. I don`t know anyone who`s faithful or wants to be.” Morals and ethics in Hollywood are a little different than what the rest of us assume is the norm. Take Roman Polanski for example. He’s a child rapist and many people in the entertainment industry are saying “what’s the big deal? He’s a genius and it was a long time ago. Leave the poor man alone” and “it wasn’t really rape, rape”.

I think it’s safe to assume that the women Lettermen was involved with were basically groupies working for him and that hIs girlfriend simply accepted his affairs as normal. I doubt she’ll make any big statement about it other than she hoped people will respect their privacy blah blah blah and then she’ll rub Dave’s feet and call him poor sweet baby.

“I think it’s safe to assume that the women Letterman was involved with were basically groupies working for him”? Huh? You may feel that it is safe for you to make a personal assumption – after all, the internet is mostly anonymous – but your wording implies a certain universality that I cannot be a part of. We don’t assume anything. To “assume” is defined as accepting that something is true without checking or confirming it. That hardly seems fair. “Groupies”? I believe the woman (the above article only mentions one woman) was employed by CBS. The last time I checked, they stopped hiring groupies in the ’70s. My word, you people are arrogant! I refuse to throw stones, assume without concrete evidence, or judge another person’s mistakes – particularly with such capricious rhetoric as displayed here. Where are your assumptions about the extortionist? He, after all, has been indicted of committing a reprehensible crime. Check your priorities.

He is no different than Spitzer or Clinton. He can’t keep it in his pants. No wonder Sarah Palin did not want him around her daughter. He is a sexual predator! Period!

    • fancypants

funny how you only bring up democrats. you’re as dimwitted as palin.

    • onestell

Martin, am I to understand that because a man of wealth has a sexual relationship with a woman he’s a sexual “predator”? Please tell me this is NOT what you actually meant to say.

Why is anyone surprised at letterman. a wise man said, a woman never passes the age of 16, and a man never passes the age of 12. Just think about it. Men always think with the wrong head.

    Gabby,

LikeI have said before, just because you have a long term relationship with someone does not mean that everything during that time was perfect. When he had those flings, maybe there were arguments between he and Regina that led to the flings. Who’s to say that Regina did not have flings with other men? Maybe they had an open relationship then decided six months ago to marry. Dave was married before and divorced in 1977. To marry again is hard. To marry, period is a big step.

Still, Stephanie Birkitt is my age. Daddy issues much?

  • Jan

Stepahnie T – totally agree with you.
We don’t know what Dave and Reginas relationship was. Only they do. Both the staff relationships were before his son was born and before he married.

Letterman is fine; he never was the “Family Values” type. Yes, he probably cheated on his girlfriend now wife. But at least he does go around claiming he is Mr. “Family Values” like some of our politicians (can you just see the grin on all “Fake News” reporters/commentators). This has been a tough summer, for Dave, for our economy but at least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).

Dave’s comedy has always been the sarcastic type. That depends on the audience being on his side. I have watched Letterman since the morning show and was always a fan. Even when he was being caustic, I always felt there was a Mid-Western decency about him. Now that we know he was sleeping with interns while in a long-term relationship, that has changed. I don’t care if his, now wife, turned a blind-eye or if the interns initiated the relationships. It doesn’t matter if there was harrassment or not. I will always view Dave a little differently now.
