Broadway's 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' revival to close Sunday

Categories: Stage

Broadway’s new revival of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs will close on Sunday, a source with the production told The New York Times. Also, the companion production of Simon’s Broadway Bound will not open as planned. Poor ticket sales are to blame. Brighton Beach Memoirs opened on Oct. 25 to mixed-to-positive reviews (EW gave it an A-), but grossed only about $124,000 for eight performances last week, The Times reported. Laurie Metcalf led the cast and David Cromer was directing both productions.

Ryan Seacrest gets restraining order against alleged stalker

Categories: Television

According to published reports, a man was arrested inside the E! building today for allegedly stalking Ryan Seacrest. Chidi Benjamin Uzomah Jr. was apparently taken into custody, though the Los Angeles Police Department would only confirm to EW that it responded to a disturbance at the Los Angeles building where Seacrest works and that someone was detained for questioning.  A rep for Seacrest did not immediately respond to calls.

Last month, police reportedly arrested Uzomah for trying to enter Seacrest’s automobile in Orange County. He pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors – assault, battery and possession of a switchblade knife – and was sentenced to 15 days in jail, three years probation. He was ordered to stay away from the American Idol host.

UPDATE: The AP reports that Seacrest has gotten a temporary restraining order against Uzomah.

Categories: Lawsuits

A Superior Court judge in Los Angeles today ordered two of Anna Nicole Smith doctors and her longtime companion Howard Stern to stand trial on charges of conspiring to illegally furnish the late Anna Nicole Smith with prescription drugs, reports the Los Angeles Times. Arraignment has been set for Dec. 11 and will be overseen by another judge. The 39-year-old supermodel died in 2007 from an overdose of a sedative and other drugs at a hospital in Florida, near the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, where she had been staying. A medical examiner ruled her death an accident. A multi-agency task force spent two years investigating how she obtained opiates, sedatives and other drugs before her death.

She described Swayze’s diagnosis with pancreatic cancer as “mind-numbing,” but said the two didn’t discuss death because they were “too positive.” “We were what we called optimist realists,” she said.
