Zurich Film Festival to go ahead with Polanski tribute

Categories: Movies

According to the Zurich Film Festival’s homepage, though an award ceremony for director Roman Polanski has been postponed following his arrest in Switzerland, the festival will go ahead with their “A Tribute to…Roman Polanski” night for festival-goers. The site says the night will “be a special appraisal of his life’s work to give everyone, who would like to express their solidarity as well as their admiration a chance to share this feeling.” Polanski was on his way to the festival to pick up a life achievement award when he was taken into custody. A statement on the festival’s site reads: “We are shocked and unable to comprehend this situation, which has affected us deeply. At no time were we aware of the planned arrest of Roman Polanski.”

Roman Polanski arrested

Categories: Movies

Academy Award-winning director Roman Polanski was arrested on a sex charge while trying to enter Switzerland Saturday. The arrest stems from an arrest warrant issued by the U.S. in 1978, when Polanski fled the country after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. The director had been living in France since then. The director was on his way to the Zurich Film Festival when he was taken into custody. Swiss officials say Polanski is currently in provisional detention, and do not know yet whether or not the director will be extradited to the United States.

Back in 1978, Polanski was accused of giving a 13-year-old champagne and subsequently having sexual intercourse with her at Jack Nicholson’s home (the actor was not home at the time). After pleading guilty and fleeing the country, there had been several attempts to settle the case, but Polanski had refused to attend hearings in the states. Just last year, Polanski’s lawyer attempted to get the case thrown out — citing a documentary that depicts backroom deals between prosecutors and the original judge assigned to the case — but a Los Angeles Superior Court refused to do so, thus opening the case back up should Polanski return to the U.S. and appear in court. The victim in the case, now 45 years old, has requested that the case be thrown out.

Former Michael Jackson adviser publishes book

Categories:

A former adviser of the late Michael Jackson has published a new book about how the pop star feared old age and appeared to be abusing drugs and cosmetic surgery nearly a decade before his death, according to the AP. The Michael Jackson Tapes by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach was based on 30 hours of taped interviews and reportedly firsthand detail about the performer’s obsessions. “I don’t want to be seen now,” Jackson confessed. “Because I am like a lizard. It is horrible.”

Jackson died June 25 at age 50. His death is being treated as a homicide.  Boteach is an orthodox Jewish rabbi who has written self-help books. He was introduced to Jackson in 1999.
