Punk singer Jim Carroll, author of `The Basketball Diaries,' dead at 60
Jim Carroll, the punk rocker who spun engrossing tales of his crazy youth into “The Basketball Diaries,” died Friday in Manhattan, according to The New York Times. He was 60 and the cause of death was a heart attack.
“The Basketball Diaries,” reissued to the mass market in 1980 after its 1978 debut, was a huge favorite among college students for its lurid tales about Carroll’s life as a teenage basketball star at an elite Manhattan private school in the ’60s. During his time there, he kept a journal which he packed with poetry and tales of his drug use. In 1995, the book was adapted for the big screen and starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll.
Carroll’s music evolved through his poetry and, thanks to help from the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, he got a three-record deal with Atlantic Records. He went on to publish many poetry collections, including “The Book of Nods” (1986) and “Fear of Dreaming” (1993).
Elton John looks to adopt child from Ukraine
Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish are hoping to adopt a Ukrainian toddler named Lev they met while touring an orphanage there, according to an internet report. The singer has has not yet started formal proceedings, which are often time-consuming and complicated. John told reporters in Ukraine this weekend that he and Furnish have wanted to adopt a child but that he was hesitant until he met Lev at an orphanage where many of the children’s parents have died from AIDS.
“David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said ‘no’ because I am 62 and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child,” John told reporters. “But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”
John and Furnish toured the orphanage – where John performed for the children – as part of his AIDS Foundation work. Ukraine has one of the fastest rising rates of HIV infection in Europe.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge issued a restraining order against a Northern California man who had allegedly stalked The Hills star Audrina Patridge. In court papers, a lawyer for Patridge said Zachory Loring, 24, of Petaluma showed up on the doorstep of her L.A. home last month, identified himself as a fan and handed her poems written to her and a photo of a woman being strangled. He returned two more times, once staying on her porch for seven hours, the lawyer said.
The restraining order prevents Loring from coming within 100 yards of the reality TV star. A hearing on a long-term order is set for Sept. 30.
