'DWTS' will honor Patrick Swayze Sept. 23

Next Wednesday’s live results show of Dancing With the Stars will feature a tribute to Patrick Swayze, according to People.com. Swayze, a classically trained ballet and jazz dancer who flaunted some Latin ballroom flair during a cameo in 2003′s Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights, guested on season 1 of Dancing when he dropped in on his buddy John O’Hurley’s rehearsal to teach him some moves in 2005. Swayze “was one of the few people to integrate dance with being an A-list actor,” said executive producer Conrad Green. Season 9 of Dancing With the Stars premieres Monday, Sept. 21.

Jill Scott cast in 'Sins of the Mother'

Singer Jill Scott (Why Did I Get Married?) will star in Lifetime’s 2010 telefilm, Sins of the Mother. Variety reports that Paul Kaufman is directing the adaptation of author Carleen Brice’s novel Orange Mint and Honey, and that Scott will play the abusive mother of a grad student who sobers up when she gives birth to another child.

Miramax thinks 'Bitch is the New Black'

Miramax has purchased film rights to journalist Helena Andrews upcoming memoir, Bitch is the New Black, and Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers will produce. Variety reports that Andrews herself will write the screenplay, about successful, young black women living in the nation’s capitol.

Universal gets 'Wicked Lovely'

Universal has acquired the film rights to author Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely, the first in a series of fantasy books about a young girl who can see faeries. Variety reports that Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show Productions has hired Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) to script the film.

Mariel Hemingway acquires 'A Moveable Feast'

A granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway has acquired the film and TV rights to A Moveable Feast, the author’s posthumous 1964 memoir about post-WWI Paris. Variety reports that Mariel Hemingway (Personal Best) and producer John Goldstone (Get Carter) will team up to get the project made.

Ron Howard teams with 'Office' veteran for IRS comedy

Greg Malins, Arianna Huffington plan political sitcom at ABC

Writer Greg Malins, who worked on Friends, has partnered with The Huffington Post‘s Arianna Huffington to develop a political sitcom for ABC, Variety reports. Freshmen will follow three newly elected members of Congress (two men and one woman; one right-leaning, one left-leaning and one independent) who share an apartment. Malins has also worked on Will and Grace and How I Met Your Mother.

Jay Chandrasekhar gears up for 'Shotgun Wedding'

Director Jay Chandrasekhar is planning to shoot his next comedy, Shotgun Wedding, starting in November. Variety reports that the Broken Lizard member also co-wrote the script with David Gilcreast. 'Night of the Living Dead' slated for 3D re-imagining

Horror classic Night of the Living Dead is being re-imagined as a 3D CGI film without George Romero’s involvement, The Hollywood Reporter writes. Night of the Living Dead: Origins will be directed by newcomer Zebediah de Soto, who also wrote the script with David R. Schwartz. The filmmakers said they wanted to bring out characters’ backstories and work on “an American-style anime.”

John Logan to adapt 'The Passage,' which Ridley Scott may direct

Writer John Logan could reunite with Gladiator director Ridley Scott on The Passage, Variety reports. Fox 2000 has hired Logan to adapt the Jordan Ainsley vampire novel, with an eye for Scott to potentially direct the project. The novel is about terminally ill patients who become healthy after they get a virus from bat bites.
