Liza Minnelli's 'Palace' gets public TV debut

Liza Minnelli’s recent Broadway show, Liza’s at the Palace, will be aired on public television later this year, according to VarietyLiza’s played Broadway last December and won a Tony this past June. The version that will air on television will be filmed during upcoming reprise performances at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand staged on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Chicago and Hairspray producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will serve as executive producers. The show includes performances of Minnelli’s signature numbers as well as a tribute to multi-hyphenate performer Kay Thompson, who is Minnelli’s godmother.

Paul Giamatti joins 'Ironclad' as King John

Sideways star Paul Giamatti has signed up to play the tyrant King John in Ironclad, a medieval action drama that being shooting in Wales next month, according to Variety. He’ll star alongside Rome and The Philanthropist star James Purefoy. The drama centers around a familiar-sounding tale that finds the Knights Templar (Purefoy) and his seven cohorts defending Rochester Castle against King John in 13th century England.

Penn and Teller head to ABC for scripted hour based on their life

Comedy-illusionist duo Penn and Teller are working on a one-hour comedy based on their lives for ABC, according to Variety. The network has committed to a script order for a series that will find the pair starring as Las Vegas magicians at night and reluctant detectives during the day. Penn and Teller have completed seven seasons of their Showtime series, Bullshit!, which finds them debunking myths, conspiracies, and misconceptions, and they’ve appeared in scripted series such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Babylon 5, and The West Wing. The move marks a return to ABC for Penn, who recently appeared on Dancing with the Stars.

Matt Damon to star in Clint Eastwood's 'Hereafter'

Matt Damon has signed up to star in Clint Eastwood’s next producing-directing project, the thriller Hereafter, and will begin shooting this fall, according to Variety. The film is said to have a supernatural vibe and the logline is being kept under wraps. Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, has thus far only described Hereafter as a thriller in the vein of The Sixth Sense.

'The Lost Symbol' sells more than one million copies

Author Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code sequel The Lost Symbol sold more than a million copies in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom on Tuesday, its first day of publication, according to Reuters. Retailers Barnes & Noble said the book broke its one-day sales record for adult fiction.

'New Moon' is already selling out

Spike Lee, Robert De Niro team with Showtime for 'Alphaville'

Spike Lee and Robert De Niro have joined forces with Showtime to develop a drama series set in the Manhattan neighborhood of Alphabet City. The Hollywood Reporter writes that John Ridley will write Alphaville, with Lee set to direct the pilot. The drama will chronicle the neighborhood’s gritty past in the 1980s, full of struggling artists, aspiring rappers, drug dealers and families.

LeBron James to play himself in 'Fantasy Basketball Camp'

LeBron James will play himself in Fantasy Basketball Camp for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, Variety reports. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel are writing the comedy about five diverse adults who come to Las Vegas to attend the LeBron James Adult Basketball Camp, trying to drag James into their personal problems. Brian Grazer will produce the film, which is expected to shoot in summer 2010.
