It looks like the people of France are a lot smarter than some of the politicians. From the NYTimes:
Marie-Louise Fort, a French lawmaker in the Assembly who has sponsored anti-incest legislation, said in an interview that she was shocked that Mr. Polanski was attracting support from the political and artistic elite. “I don’t believe that public opinion is spontaneously supporting Mr. Polanski at all,” she said. “I believe that there is a distinction between the mediagenic class of artists and ordinary citizens that have a vision that is more simple.”
The mood was even more hostile in blogs and e-mails to newspapers and news magazines. Of the 30,000 participants in an online poll by the French daily Le Figaro, more than 70 percent said Mr. Polanski, 76, should face justice. And in the magazine Le Point, more than 400 letter writers were almost universal in their disdain for Mr. Polanski.
This is just a publicity stunt by the LAPD. Great job, cops, you’ve done another great job wasting money and time on this one.
We are living in the middle ages in the West. A witch hunt because of a 13 year old girl. WTF??
Brazil has had one of the sanest laws regarding this. If the medical examiner determines that the girl in question has had her period then she is considered an adolescent. It may be in 10 percent of the cases that an 11 year old girl already menstruates in which case she is considered an adolescent and
that would not be considered a rape if she had consentual sex.
Menstruation is a fair test of reproductive maturity in a female.
Simon, I look forward to seeing you on a future episode of To Catch a Predator.
Simon, you are disgusting!
DUH ‘support famous rapists NOW’ was just being sarcastic hence the screen name and by the way you are so my hero! That also goes for you ‘reality check’ and could you PLEASE give it to those yahoos in HollyWEIRD who are defending this scuzzball?! It doesn’t surprise me in the least that those sickos and freak shows are supporting ‘one of their own’ despite him being a demented sicko.
Lauren,
Not all of Hollywood is supporting POlanski’s child raping ways. Cheers stars Kirstie Alley REALLY tears into Polanski and his defenders:

Roman Polanski is nothing but a disgusting, depraved child rapist. Lock him up and throw away the key!
31 years ago, the statute has run out. This is an examole of the new big brother drug czars we call politicians such as obama and other small players
I cannot help thinking that all the “Hollywood” people leaping to his defense are worried that if they don’t they might have difficulty finding work amongst some of Roman Polanski’s friends. One misplaced comment or supporting the wrong cause might get you informally blacklisted amongst the producers who influence how movies are cast and funded.
Let Polansky make a great movies!!!We need him!
