Netflix awards $1 million for plan to improve movie recommendation system

Categories: Movies, News

Netflix awarded $1 million dollars to a team of engineers, researchers and a scientist who came up with a plan to improve the company’s movie recommendation system by 10%. The winners, BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos, beat out thousands of competitors in the Netflix contest, which the company first announced three years ago.

Thank goodness, because the stuff that comes up sometimes on my recommend list is inexplicable. If you like well-made movies, irrespective of genre, the system can’t figure out what “box” to put you in. No “box” is the point.
