Jay Leno's ratings drop, still strong

Tags:

The second night of NBC’s The Jay Leno Show took an expected hit in the ratings. Tuesday’s followup show drew an estimated 12-13 million viewers, down approximately 34% from Monday’s highly-publicized premiere, according to Mediaweek. Even with that downgrade, though, Leno’s second night was a 19% improvement from last year’s timeslot occupant, the season premiere of Law & Order: SVU.

I am loving this, I so hope that The Jay Leno Show stays on for years, i know a lot of people are bashing him for taking the hour but you know what? It isn’t Jay’s fault so quit bashing, come on everyone can use a laugh and if you don’t like Jay, turn the channel but for me, i Love that he is being a hit right now, GO JAY and rock your Big chin, lol, peace

    • bob

I think people are bashing Jay because his new show sucks.

      • SYN COOPER

Sucks? You are too kind. It REALLY SUCKS !

      • SSZ

I have no problem with Jay or his show. I would rather see some actual, quality shows on at the 9:00 timeslot. Its the only hour I get to watch tv and I don’t care to watch Jay every night. Boring.

      • Mark

13 million people? It can’t be sucking that bad. But you go back to watching your ridiculous reality shows, Bob!!

    • CJ

I agree that everyone could use a laugh, that’s why they should cancel this junk and bring Chuck back before March! Best. Show. Ever.

      • KB

totally agree – can’t wait for Chuck to come back!

      • MattyB

Yes! Chuck! Chuck! Chuck! You think if I chant that loud and long enough that TPTB will bring it back sooner? Chuck! Chuck! Chuck! Best show on NBC in the last 10 years.

      • Mark

Chuck?? Now that is a show that sucked big time!

      • Al

        Hey Mark- Chuck me!

      • Neal

Yes, we want Chuck soon, please!!

    • Amanda

I don’t think he chose to take the hour, really. For what I understand, Leno wanted to leave NBC completely but they begged him to come back and offered him the time slot… Don’t know any more than that.

      • Mark

No…he didn’t want to leave. Where do you get your information from Amanda? The National Inquirer?? NBC forced him off the Tonight Show because they thought Conan would bring in a younger audience. Talk about SUCK…Conan’s Tonight Show isn’t any different than his 12:30 AM show was…oh no..wait a minute, actually, now it’s even WORSE! Geez! Nobody forced Johnny Carson to leave and he was on for 30 years. NBC is so damn greedy. They deserve to be in last place!!

      • Maryb

And what? NBC had a gun to his head? Leno is broke and needs the money? Please. Leno could have still left. But FIVE hours a week in PRIME TIME? That’s what he couldn’t refuse. I fault Leno as much as I fault NBC. Leno for is ego trip and NBC because they were stupid to replace him in the first place and then went overboard trying to keep him.

    • Joe

      Rock your BIG CHIN (LOL)…

No wonder you found this garbage funny.

Oh and you do know you’re not supposed to laugh out loud at your own comments. It should be a response from someone reading what you wrote.

      • wd

im glad the LOL police is here to save the day. if you dont like the show, dont watch. many people like him enough to give him a decent, respectable rarting.

      • Em

        LOL police. really?

  • Bob O’Brien

I’m glad Jay is doing well.
    How fortuitous that Kanye was
    scheduled for Monday’s show.
    Timing is everything. The success
of this show could lead to the return of “Variety” shows in prime time. I met and had a picture taken with Jay in his Tonight Show days, and he couldn’t have been nicer.

  • Casey

Still as un-funny as ever. Haven’t laughed yet watching his show.

    • Gretchen

then stop watching so it goes away!!

      • Casey

Done watching it. Wanted to see Seinfeld, Kanye reaction, Tom Cruise. But thisa humor is rotten. Stick a fork in him, he’s done.

    • Susan

seriously!! my radio station wakes me up in the morning with outtakes from his show…yuck!

    • Mark

Casey….then why are you watching the show if you don’t like it?? If you keep watching it…must be you’re a closet Leno fan. This is the USA…turn the channel if you don’t like the show and let the rest of us who appreciate the show, let us enjoy it.

  • Jeff W.

Oh please, this is not surprising at all. NBC hyped the hell out the new Leno show so the curiosity factor got people to check out the first episode. I guarantee that his ratings will be on life-support within a week or two. I mean, have you tried to watch this dreck?

    • Jackie

True. If they put as much effort into publicising shows that people actually like and giving them a better time slot (hello Chuck) then maybe we never would have ended up with this crapfest five nights a week. Hopefully the ratings will continue to drop.

    • Mark

Yes I have. Why don’t you people give the show a chance? It’s only been on 2 days and you’re pronouncing in dead. It’s just like the old Tonight Show which is why I like it. If YOU don’t like it, then change the @#$%^& channel morons!!

  • Casey

Bad, bad, bad. Michael Moore singing!! The comedian was bad. The Dan Band un-funny. They showed a baby crying at Conan O’Brien – not funny. Even Conan took a little swipe at Leno or the concept – “NBC’s Night of 1,000 Monologues” “Using Leno’s leftover jokes.” This won’t fly.

  • tigersmurfette

why are people watching this unentertaining stuff?? this and any “reality” mtv show, seriously america, this is the reason other countries do not like you

    • Jackie

I think it has a little more to do with the “war” in Iraq and other political decisions than whether Jay Leno has a show on five nights a week or there is yet another crass dating show on MTV. Just my uneducated opinion though. You could be right.

    • court

smurfette at least we have choices on what we can watch- if you dn’t like it leave ignorant-a-hole!

  • Jack

If you thought people left network television in droves because “reality programming” was dominating primetime, I can’t wait until it sinks in that this is a Talk Show that is on 5 nights a week. Every week. Forever (or at least until NBC pulls their collective heads out of their collective…well, you know.)

  • chichi

I am sure after the hype dies down and the rest of the shows premier next week the ratings will drop instantly and it will disappear from this time slot every night of the week. NBC sucks even more this year. Used to watch almost every show now down to 1 or 2…disappointing. But there are other great shows on other chanels so I don’t really care if NBC turns into the new senior station.

  • swthompson

The first two nights have not exactly had the competition of a new season.

  • Sarah O

Also, he has no competition this week. People are tuning in this week for the novelty, but once regular network competition starts next week and the week after, I’m thinking Leno’s ratings will drop like a stone. I know I’d rather have the TV off at 10:00 than watch him — and it’s nothing personal against Jay. It’s the only way I have to protect against how NBC has thrown up its hands, admitted defeat, and given up on 1/3rd of its prime time hours each week night.

  • Gretchen

I am avoiding this show like the plague…I liked Leno at 11:35p, but 10 is always reserved in my mind for ‘normal’ programming!

    • Diane

I’m enjoying being able to watch Leno at 10:00… by 11;30 I’d better be asleep since my day starts EARLY

      • Mark

Finally…the voice of sanity on here. That’s the point…a lot of us have to work in the morning and aren’t on welfare like you Gretchen…staying up all night watching late night TV. Now you’re going to get a brand new audience who didn’t watch the Tonight Show because it was on too late. Get used to it all of you Leno haters….it’s going to have to tank very badly in order to go away. If you read the earlier articles, even if it gets an average of 4 or 5 million per night, NBC will still consider it a success. It ain’t going away folks! So turn the channel and stop complaining!!

  • jetgraphics

NBC must be really hurting to run this “low budget” filler in prime time. Unfortunately, the audience and the advertisers will suffer, as more folks tune out and turn off.
    Less filler, more taste!
    Less filler, more taste!

  • Mike

And they will continue to drop. The first 2 shows have been awful. I saw what I needed to see and I won’t be back.

    • Henry

I was excited about the show, but honestly, this has been 2 nights of the worst tV ever. At least in the Bottom 5. I don’t plan to watch any more.

  • Mike

By the way. Did you know other countries hate America b/c jay Leno gets ratings? tigersmurfette might be the dumbest person in America or whatever county she is in.

    • tigersmurfette

no, you didnt read the statement properly, its the content, not the ratings, and more really for the mtv shows, seriously, you should be ashamed those “stars” are famous

  • B

It will be interesting to see what the ratings are once the new fall programming really begins next week and beyond. I don’t wish failure on Jay, but I’m very unhappy w/NBC for not giving their 10 p.m. dramas more of a chance. They’ve canceled some very good ones in the last couple of years.

    • Mark

NBC has given their dramas more than enough time to make a difference. NBC is losing money big time and being they are owned by General Electric, Jeff Immelt does not like to lose money. I applaud NBC for having the courage to try out this experiment.
