Elton John looks to adopt child from Ukraine

Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish are hoping to adopt a Ukrainian toddler named Lev they met while touring an orphanage there, according to an internet report. The singer has has not yet started formal proceedings, which are often time-consuming and complicated. John told reporters in Ukraine this weekend that he and Furnish have wanted to adopt a child but that he was hesitant until he met Lev at an orphanage where many of the children’s parents have died from AIDS.

“David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said ‘no’ because I am 62 and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child,” John told reporters. “But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”

John and Furnish toured the orphanage – where John performed for the children – as part of his AIDS Foundation work. Ukraine has one of the fastest rising rates of HIV infection in Europe.

Why don’t you adopt an unfortunate American child. We have those, too you know. And they need help just as much as the Ukranian ones.

    • Alice

It’s a valid point but neither of them is American.

Graeme, you obviously don’t know jack about why people adopt children outside of the United States.

      • Kia

big fat TAX DEDUCTION – that’s why

What is up with these famous people who keep on trying to have and/or raise children when they have one foot in the grave? It’s actually kind of disturbing.

Probably because Elton’s career is done & he finally has more time? Who knows? I’m not saying that to be mean – he just doesn’t seem that in demand anymore compared to all the “hot” young stars we see too much of.

Adpoted kids are the new BLING

  • sara

a whim is no where near a good reason to adopt a child.

  • Bobby

That kid will be destined to grow up to be a nutjob.

Gays can’t adopt in 36 of the 50 United States.

  • Mari

I think you’re wrong Mike. I’m almost positive that only three states don’t let gays adopt.

  • Snarf

Children are the new must have accessory for the “A” gays, having moved on from sport utility vehicles and small dogs.

      I prefer the term “KIDBLING”

i think it’s great that they are adopting a child from another country. i’m sure there are plenty of children in the usa being adopted. it’s their choice for what country they want to adopt from.

    • Kia

Fine their choice – for what reason – to be good daddies – or to get “awwww” points

  • Kia

It seems that all sorts of celebrities are adopting kids from countries that they do not live in – what’s up with that – are children from other countries considered the new “BLING” – shame on you if that’s the reason – and don’t give me this crap that you are only doing this to save them – save them from what – a situation that YOU deem not good for the kid…. kids everywhere need help – ADOPT – BUT FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRY

On the whole the US has impossible adopton policies making it very difficult to adopt here. Also people want babies or children under the age of 3 and white. Kids who do not fit that description fall into foster care and we all know what a clusterf*ck that can be. I think people look to other countries because the laws make it easier to adopt and there are more younger children. I think it is great anytime someone despite age, race, sexual preference ect wants to enrich the life of a child who would otherwise be forgotten and left to flounder in the system. CHildren are children regardless of what country they are born in and it is messed up to judge a persons desire to help. If you are that concerned with children in AMERICA then write your congress person to change the adoption laws in AMERICA not EW.
