I’m stunned. I was appalled when I thought she was a GUEST judge. For as much as I thought Paula had no business critiquing actual singers, at least she had experience navigating the music industry. Same for Kara, Randy and Simon. They know the music industry (and Kara can sing). But WTF with Ellen? I love her, but if they MUST have a fourth judge, it should be someone who knows singing or the music biz. LOLOLOLOL It’s like the producers/network are TRYING to sabotage the show! Good thing for them, at least they’re succeeding…
This show is circling the toilet,the ratings keep going down,down,down.The only thing keeping it going is Simon,if he ever leaves this show will be history.

I really, really love Ellen, but I don’t think she should be the judge. She doesn’t have an adequate musical background.
Ellen was such a disappointment as a judge on SYTYCD. What makes Fox think she’d be any better on Idol? Will she have any meaningful insights, or will she just make some joke and pass it to Simon?
I like Ellen DeGeneres. She did well on her guest role for “So You Think You Can Dance”. However her humour mixed into the conclusion of every song for multiple shows is going to get old quickly IMO. She can’t add much on music critiques. This is proof that AI has no intention in making this show be about the Idols.
The key will be mixing humor with an actual critique. She can’t be afraid to tell a contestant when they suck (not in so many words, of course)! On SYTYCD she only gave praise, and when she didn’t have anything to praise, she just cracked a joke. That would get old after just one show (and it did).
Are they trying to get me NOT to watch this show anymore?
What a wonderfully crazy idea! Like you need a music degree or experience to judge American Idol. The only reason the judges are there is for people to cheer them, boo them, or, in Paula’s case, puzzle over. The American public votes for the winners, not the judges, and no musical experience is required of us.
It has to be a joke. Ellen announced it during her show’s taping – any official announcement from FOX?
I like Ellen, but not for this show. Three judges. Stop.
OK – I see Fox announced it as well. This is going to be a total waste of time – more talking; less singing. Not entertaining at all.
I agree. I hope another TV network sees this as an opportunity to put a competing show up against it with a real singing competition rather than a reality show about judges.
She is exactly what American Idol needs – some comic relief! and someone who clearly enjoys listening to fun, good music… I don’t know anything about the music industry either, but I always have an opinion on the performance… who cares if she isn’t in the “industry.” she can provide a viewpoint that is different from the others. And I can’t wait to hear what she has to say about Simon! I, for one, am excited about the new season.
THIS. Seriously, guys. An industry insider is going to give you more of the same Randy/Kara bull**** about package artists and dollar signs. Do you really want that, people?

Ouch. With Kara and now Ellen that pretty much spells the end of my “Idol” watching days.
weird. I love Ellen, love her dancing but loved Paula! I was hoping for a musician if Paula really wasn’t coming back. Someone who could mentor the contestants with something to back it up with!
Ellen can still be a mentor. She’s going to cry for these people and care about them as much as Paula.
I was going to say also that she seems to be someone celebs and guests look to, to receive wisdom from. SHe’s encouraging and in this role I think she’ll be honest while still trying to spare their feelings (which was Paula). Basically anyone who loved Paula and was upset about a replacement, if this is a real story, would find it so hard to dislike Ellen or not accept her. Darn that FOX – Simon probably suggested it, he and Ellen are close (and she’s close with Ryan also) and he knows what viewers want!
while i LOVE watching ellen’s show, the thought of her as a permanent judge on AI has me perplexed. she was cute on SYTYCD, but that was it – she said nothing of worth… but neither did paula most of the time. it should’ve been kara to go so they would go back to just 3 judges. i don’t know about 4 judges again, but ellen may get me to watch, at least. we’ll have to see how this works out. and yes, slezak, your thoughts?
Uh, yeah, Ellen would make a good guest judge, but honestly, what does she know about music.
WHAT! I like Ellen well enough, really. But come on, as the permanent fourth judge on Idol? Thats just all kinds of ridiculous. Say what you want about Paula, but she brought heart, the wackiness, and the music background to the panel. Can Ellen say the same? I am too through with Idol.
