James Patterson inks 17-book deal

Tags:

Bestselling author James Patterson has signed a deal for his next 17 books, according to Publishers Weekly. The staggeringly large deal will keep the prolific writer with publisher Hachette through 2012. The deal includes 11 adult titles (to be published in hardcover by Little, Brown and Company and in paperback by Grand Central Publishing) and six titles for younger readers (to be published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers). The contract includes new installments with beloved Patterson characters like detectives Alex Cross and Michael Bennett, as well as San Francisco’s Women’s Murder Club. In a statement, Patterson said, “I love writing stories. I have more to tell and I’m thrilled that the wonderful Hachette Book Group will continue to be my partner in exciting readers with these stories that I love.” Enough of that, Patterson, now get to work!

17 books in 2 1/2 years? Thats ridiculous. How can that even be called writing?

I love the Women’s Murder Club series…I miss the show too

    Katie,

17 books means that he’s probably coming up with the ideas for the stories but hired a multitude of ghost writers to write the books for him. Welcome to the lucrative world of book publishing.

    Hack.

Yeah, for example “The Women’s Murder Club” series is written by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. I’m sure she writes the majority of the story.

I don’t care. His books are the best. I love them and my children love his children’s stories. They are easy to read, quick and well-written.

Yeah, he won’t be “writing” the books. And I am not trying to be snotty, but his books are not well-written. I will admit that he can come up with good stories, but they are written in very uninteresting, uninspired ways.

It’s what he has been doing for quite some time. He will give other authors (Jack DuBrul, Andrew Gross, etc…) detailed outlines of what he wants to happen – and they fill in the blanks.

His books are exponentially dropping in quality as the number per year increases. The one I just finished had an awful ending. Just basically stopped. Booo!

He can write 17 books in 2.5 years because he has had a lot of practice, his books are largely formula and once you have a formula that works you can knock books out like cookies from a cookie press. Plop, plop, plop. Of course, he probably comes up with the stories/plots and then has others help write the books. I’d rather have good, well-crafted writing and have to wait for it than this kind of quantity.
