Responding to reports that DJ AM relapsed before his death Friday, a representative for the late celebrity disc jockey released this statement today: ”As soon as his friends, representation and his AA sponsor learned that he relapsed, which was only a couple days before he passed away, they sprung into action to try and get him to agree to go to rehab.”
DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Michael Goldstein, was found dead in his New York City apartment at the age of 36. Published reports said police found a crack pipe and prescription pills there. The disc jockey had talked openly about past addictions to drugs, but had claimed he had been drug-free for years. He was hosting MTV’s drug intervention reality show Gone Too Far.

He didn’t just CLAIM to be drug free for years. He WAS drug free and committed to his sobriety but it only takes one relapse.
I think out of respect for Adam, MTV MUST AIR the show that SHOWS youth what a demon beast drugs are and how they destroy lives.
i agree heidi, i think in the wake of all of this, it would be appropriate to air the show, not only as a tribute to the work that he did do, and the good that his struggles with addiction were put to use in. but also, to show that the battle with drugs and recovery NEVER ends. it is a lifelong battle, there is no time frame that means you’ve beat the addiction. it’s a tragic story, but an important one, and i would hate to see mtv quash it because it had an unhappy ending.
I agree Heidi! I have read reports that he had make a statement that it had been 11 yrs. since he held a crack pipe and he did it in one of the Gone Too Far eps. This is a perfect example of what can happen no matter how many years who have been clean. He held a crack pipe, he lapsed, he died.
Well I am with Heidi & Melissa. I believe that taping of the MTV show was simply too much for AG, that what I assume. Lately it’s said that he acted all irrational (even if you don’t get the notion from all his entries on Twitter) and perhaps he pushed his gf away from him because he felt worthless, not good enough for her. AG was an extremely hard worker, traveling all over the country and he still had to struggle with the images and pain of the plane crash which he survived last September.
I read another article which stated that his West Coast manager and his recovery sponsor visited him the day before he was found dead. He only allowed his sponsor inside his NYC apartment and during this meeting he smoked crack and swallowed pills. Seriously at this point his sponsor should have had him under close observation and perhaps arranged immediately a return to a rehab clinic. But they left him back there alone in his flat….. and he died.
I took my time and checked out Hayley’s twitter account “thisishwood”. IMHO the couple was still together although they might had a major fight. Let me give you couple of examples. Her entries were: “La Scala with my soon to be my mother-in-law and lover. Delish.” (Aug 10th); “@DJ_AM this bed sucks without you.” (Aug 13th); “Wow, my boyfriend just came home with some new reading material for me. Notice the “hippie” bookmark. He is good.” (Aug 15th) Afterwards she makes some strange and sad entries on Twitter like “Come back.” (Aug 18th), “Have faith. have hope” (Aug 21st), Where have all the flowers gone?” (Aug 23rd). I believe her. Whatever AG went psychologically through at time of his his death we’ll perhaps never know. It’s a shocking and tragic ending of a gifted young man which I believe no one really could imagine cause he was always in good spirits.
RIP DJ AM…. you’ll be missed.
I agree with Melissa as I am a recovering addict myself and have 10 years next month.
RIP Adam…
Its just so heartbreaking.. and I agree 100% with Heidi.. MTV MUST air that show.. RIP Adam.
I work for an online community specifically designed to help people accomplish continuous and meaningful recovery. We are a new startup and starting to gain momentum. Part of our strategy is relapse prevention through trusted connections. This story illustrates the shocking fact that relapses can kill, and how important continous recovery is to staying healthy and in many cases, staying alive. 36 is too young to die. Popular culture must stop turning backwards to the fact that alcohol and drug use is a kille and it is not “cool” to party like a rock start. Stay sober and be well.
I believe holding that pipe again was the beginning of the end for Adam. The temptation to use again was so strong, he was powerless to control it. What a sad end for a talented man.
