David Mamet will write and direct a new film version of The Diary of Anne Frank, Variety reports. Disney has acquired the rights to film a new version of the famous diary of a young Jewish girl hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam; the project will also draw on the original play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich. Mamet, who is already at work on the script, will also produce with Andrew Braunsberg (Being There). The story was previously brought to the big screen in 1959 by director George Stevens, with Hackett and Goodrich writing that script.

MTV renews 'Going Out With Him?' and orders new reality shows
MTV has given a thumbs-up to several scripted and reality shows while renewing three first-year shows, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Among the new series in the works: the Ashton Kutcher-produced American Idiots, a sitcom called Hard Times and an untitled comedy/variety project starring Rob Hoffman. MTV also ordered a second season of Is She Really Going Out With Him?, a show inspired by the site Hot Chicks With Douchebags, and Silent Library, which is based on a Japanese game show.
Kutcher’s American Idiots features a cast of “idiots” who re-enact popular viral videos for cash prizes. Hard Times stars Paul Iacono as a late-blooming loser. Teen Cribs, a spinoff of MTV Cribs, was also picked up for 40 episodes.
Joan Rivers roast fails to cook up big audience
The Comedy Central roast of Joan Rivers on Sunday only attracted 2.8 million viewers, a 32% percent drop from the network’s last special that poked fun at Larry the Cable Guy (4.1 million) in March, according to Variety. Given the appeal of previous roasts involving Bill Engvall (6.2 million) and Pamela Anderson (4.3 million), the network reportedly upped its roast specials this year. Brad Garrett, Tom Arnold and Robin Givens were among the comedians who participated in Rivers’ roast hosted by Kathy Griffin.
Rapper C-Murder convicted of second-degree murder
Rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller was convicted of second-degree murder today in the 2002 shooting of a fan, the Associated Press reports. A jury in Louisiana reached the 10-2 verdict in its second day of deliberations. Miller faces life in prison for the killing of 16-year-old Steve Thomas in a nightclub.
Warner Bros. to develop Lego movie
Warner Bros. is developing a movie around Lego toys, according to Variety. Dan and Kevin Hageman are writing the script for the flick that will reportedly mix animation and live action. Dan Lin (Terminator Salvation) will produce, along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison.
John Hughes remembered at private funeral in Illinois
Director/screenwriter/producer John Hughes was remembered during a private funeral earlier today in Chicago suburb Lake Forest, Ill. According to The Chicago Tribune, family, friends and colleagues such as Matthew Broderick and Ben Stein (who both starred in 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) attended the memorial service for Hughes, who died of a heart attack on Thursday at the age of 59. Stein, who was one of the speakers to pay tribute, said the service was “very touching.” Hughes will be laid to rest at a Lake Forest cemetery.
Killers frontman Brandon Flowers welcomes new son
The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers, 28, and his wife Tana, welcomed their second son, Gunner, last week. Baby Gunner will join the Flowers’ brood with older brother, Ammon, 2 and the band’s rep Jen Appel tells People, “Both baby and parents are happy and healthy.” The singer officially confirmed the news before a performance at Lollapalooza on Sunday.
Michael Jackson tribute in Vienna will be broadcast worldwide
A tribute being held for Michael Jackson next month at Vienna’s 17th-century Schoenbrunn Palace will be broadcast worldwide, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The event’s promoter, Georg Kindel of World Awards Media GmbH, stated that “Negotiations are ongoing with networks over rights to broadcast what’s being billed as Jackson’s main global tribute, and the pop legend’s brother Jermaine is assembling the lineup of about 10 ‘of the biggest artists of our time’.” U2, Madonna, and Whitney Houston are among the acts rumored to perform at the event. Tickets for the service are set to go on sale Aug. 20.
Jennifer Hudson welcomes baby boy!
Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and Grammy-winning singer, welcomed son David Daniel Otunga Jr. on Monday, according to people.com.
“The baby is beautiful and perfect,” said Hudson’s rep. “His parents are ecstatic.”
The child is the first for Hudson, 27, and fiancé David Otunga.
'King of the Hill' gets hourlong finale
King of the Hill will end its 13-season run with an hourlong series finale Sept. 13. Fox execs had hinted last week during the Television Critics Association press tour that they wouldn’t be airing any new episodes of the animated show; this special episode will mark the end of its run.
