George Michael questioned, released after crash

Categories: Music, Music Biz

Singer George Michael maintains he was “stone cold sober” when his SUV rammed into a tractor trailer in England Friday night, the Associated Press reports. Michael was arrested and questioned for five hours after his Land Rover hit the back of a lorry truck. “The driver of a Land Rover, a 46-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of being unfit through drink or drugs,” said a police spokesperson. “He was later released without charge.” The driver of the lorry, Lawrie Rowe, maintains that Michael “must have been doing 100mph” when Michael’s vehicle struck his. Rowe went on to tell London’s Sun that after the accident, “He came over to my cab and asked if I had stopped to give him a lift. He was absolutely not with it, so I told him ‘no.’ But he insisted and tried to get in. …When it finally dawned on him that I wouldn’t give in, he walked off” down the highway. Michael, who has admitted to past substance abuse problems, has been arrested repeatedly. There is no word on whether further legal action will be taken against him.

Memphis musician Jim Dickinson dies at 67

Categories: Music, Music Biz

Famed piano player Jim Dickinson, 67, has passed away early this morning in his sleep, Commercial Appeal reports. The Memphis producer/artist is perhaps best known for producing Big Star’s album 3rd, and his session work playing piano on tracks by Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Aretha Franklin, among countless others. He recently had undergone heart surgery for a triple bypass, and a benefit in his honor was held in Arkansas last week, in an effort to help defray his medical costs. “He had a great life, and he was a consummate family man,” Dickinson’s wife, Mary, said. “He loved music and his family. And he loved Memphis music, specifically.”

Bob Dylan approached by New Jersey police

Categories: Music, Music Biz

The AP is reporting that a 24-year-old police officer apparently unfamiliar with Bob Dylan approached the legendary musician in Long Branch, New Jersey last month and asked him for identification. Police received a report from a resident of the New Jersey shore community who said a man was wandering around the neighborhood. Dylan was in Long Branch on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood. ”I don’t think she [the officer] was familiar with his entire body of work,” Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley told the AP yesterday. After a brief exchange, during which two officers asked Dylan his name and what he was doing in that particular neighborhood, the cops accompanied Dylan back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Dylan had not been carrying any ID with him. The hotel staff vouched for him and the officers thanked him for his cooperation. ”He couldn’t have been any nicer to them,” Woolley said.

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.
Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.
A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.
“I don’t think she was familiar with his entire body of work,” Woolley said.
The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.
The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:
“What is your name, sir?” the officer asked.
“Bob Dylan,” Dylan said.
“OK, what are you doing here?” the officer asked.
“I’m on tour,” the singer replied.
A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.
The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” said that he didn’t have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night’s show.
The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.
The officers thanked him for his cooperation.
“He couldn’t have been any nicer to them,” Woolley added.
How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Friday

'Big Brother' contestant Chima Simone kicked off the show; she claims she quit

Categories: Television

CBS has confirmed that Big Brother 11 contestant Chima Simone, the freelance journalist from West Hollywood, was booted off the show Saturday. Simone’s surprise departure capped off a particularly volatile 24 hours in the Big Brother house. On Thursday, Simone’s powers as the head of household were overruled when fellow houseguest Jeff exercised the coup d’etat, a special power that allows him to withdraw Simone’s nominations for eviction and put up two of his own instead. He nominated Jessie and Natalie; the bodybuilder was subsequently evicted on a 3-2 vote.

Simone, together with fellow houseguests Natalie and Lydia, bemoaned Jessie’s departure by villifying Jeff and his apparent alliance with Russell; at one point she called the latter martial arts fighter a “terrorist.” Multiple fansites tried to stay on top of Simone’s antics on Friday, including some that reported she threw her microphone into the pool and refused to put it back on. An official statement from CBS seems to confirm that Simone failed to comply with BB mandates: “Chima has been evicted by the producers from the Big Brother house for violating the rules. She will not be part of the show’s jury. Her eviction will be addressed on an upcoming broadcast of the show.”

However, in an interview with Examiner.com, Simone disputes CBS’ version of the events.  ”As crazy as that house is, the producers NEVER want the world to think or know that we houseguests DO LEAVE when it becomes futile to stay,” she says in the interview.  “I lost faith in the show and my ability to remain committed to this game.  All of the remaining housemates know I wanted to leave and that is why any conversation concerning me is cut in the live feed because they don’t want America to hear the truth about my voluntary departure.”

Houseguests have come and gone from the house over the last 10 seasons (welcome back, BB 9′s James! We hardly knew ye, BB 9′s Neil!). But it is rare for the producers to carry out their own evictions because of bad behavior. The first time it occurred was in season two, when an inebriated Justin Sebik was booted after he held a knife to a fellow HG’s throat.

Brazilian TV host accused of killing for ratings

Categories: Television

According to Variety, Brazilian TV crime show host Wallace Souza is suspected of ordering at least five killings to boost his show’s popularity. The popular Canal Livre shows police raids and arrests but police in the city of Manaus have become suspicious of the speed Souza and his crew get to the crime scenes, in one case showing up while gun smoke was still coming out of a victim’s body.

Police have arrested 15 people linked to Souza, who is also a state representative and former police officer, including his sons, a show producer and bodyguard. Testimony from one ex-police officer links a victim on the show as being an ordered killing by Souza as a way to eliminate a rival in organized crime, while Souza’s son’s testomony led to a police raid on Souza’s home where 250,000 reals; $15,000 in American currency; and assault rifles were found. Police have charged Souza for drug trafficking, gang formation and weapons possession, but as long as he is a state representative he has legislative immunity and cannot be arrested. Though Souza denies the charges, a special task force has been formed to investigate, which includes a judge and state government secretary of police who are under 24-hour police protection.

George Clooney to sue photographer in Italy

Categories: Lawsuits

George Clooney is planning to sue a paparazzo photographer and two magazines for taking private photos of the actor’s Italian home, according to TMZ. A photographer allegedly climbed the wall of Clooney’s home and took photos of a 13-year-old girl who was changing in one of the star’s guest bedrooms, as well as photos of Clooney and his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis. The images were then reportedly published in two magazines.

“I don’t know about the law in the United States, but in Italy it’s illegal for photographers to climb over my wall and to take long-lens pictures of a 13-year-old girl in her bedroom,” Clooney said in a statement. “I draw the line of privacy at that.” Clooney’s rep confirmed to EW that the actor is taking legal action.
