Hugh Grant denies rom-com rumor

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies

Hugh Grant is denying rumors circulating in the British press that he was embarrassingly turned down for a role in a young U.K. director’s film debut. According to the reports, the Four Weddings and a Funeral star allegedly placed a call to rookie filmmaker Charis Orchard and offered his acting services in her upcoming romantic comedy, Will’s Diaries. Convinced the caller was a fake, Orchard reportedly snubbed him. But Grant’s rep says the whole story is bogus. “Hugh’s never heard of this project or the director and did not call her,” she told EW. Phew. That settles that.

The good news from all of this: Orchard has successfully publicized her film. Well played! The bad news: Hugh Grant still isn’t starring in her film.

'Will & Grace' showrunner developing show about gay-straight friendship

Categories: Television

Former Will & Grace executive producer Gary Janetti is returning to familiar territory, working on a sitcom about gay-straight friendship for NBC — but this time, the friends are both men. And while the concept sounds similar to a failed 2007 pilot from Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick — which was loosely based on their own relationship — NBC says Janetti’s project is an entirely separate new series.

Robert Novak, journalist and 'Crossfire' host, dies at 78

Categories: Politics, Television

Robert Novak, the legendary syndicated columnist and longtime cohost of CNN’s Crossfire, died at his home in Washington from brain cancer today, according to the Associated Press. He was 78.

The journalist, nicknamed “the Prince of Darkness” for his unabashed conservative views, pitbull pessimism, and take-no-prisoners brand of political commentary, began working for the Associated Press in Washington in 1957, followed by a stint at The Wall Street Journal, and then, in 1962, a partnership with Rowland Evans, which eventually led to a slot on the fledgling CNN cohosting the political talk show, Evans and Novak. The sparring cable shows Crossfire and The Capital Gang followed.

Despite his long career reporting stories about Washington players, Novak became the story himself in 2003 when, acting on a tip, he revealed the name of C.I.A. officer Valerie Plame, which led to a lengthy criminal investigation.
