Bread bassist/keyboardist Larry Knechtel dies at 69

Larry Knechtel, a seasoned session musician who joined soft rockers Bread on bass and keyboards in 1971, has died at age 69 in Yakima, Wash., the Los Angeles Times reports. The cause of death was reportedly a heart attack. Knechtel won a Grammy Award in 1970 for arranging Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” As a member of the instrumental session group known as the Wrecking Crew, he played on recordings by the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, the Byrds, and more.

Zach Galifianakis in talks for 'Dinner for Schmucks'

The summer’s breakout comedy star Zach Galifianakis, long a fixture on the alt-comedy circuit, is in talks to star alongside Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd in a Jay Roach-directed comedy Dinner for Schmucks. The long-gestating project, which also stars Lucy Punch, is about “the most pathetic guy ever to be invited to another man’s weekly dinner party,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Galifianakis would play “an assistant manager of a mattress store who is dating Carell’s ex-wife.”

'True Blood"s Moyer cast in 'Priest'

True Blood star Stephen Moyer has been cast in Priest, the Paul Bettany-led, Scott Stewart-directed thriller about “a warrior priest [Bettany] who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who kidnapped his niece,” according to Variety. Moyer will play Bettany’s brother, and 90210’s Lily Collins has been cast as the niece. They join the already-announced Maggie Q and Twilight’s Cam Gigandet in the film.

'One Tree Hill' actor Antwon Tanner pleads guilty to Social Security fraud

One Tree Hill‘s Antwon Tanner has pleaded guilty to fraudulently selling Social Security numbers, the Associated Press reports. While the actor, who plays Skills on the CW drama, entered a not guilty plea when he was charged in April, he has now admitted in a Brooklyn court that he made $10,000 from the illegal Social Security scheme. Tanner is expected to get up to a year in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 20.

Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez crowned Miss Universe 2009

Stefania Fernandez, 18, of Venezuela won the Miss Universe competition on Aug. 23, Reuters reports. This is the second year in a row that a Venezuelan woman has been named Miss Universe, and the first time in the competition’s history that any country has produced two consecutive winners.

Police investigate burglary at Lindsay Lohan's home

Police were called to Lindsay Lohan’s L.A. home on Aug. 23 to investigate a burglary, Reuters reports. The actress’ rep says that “many…personal belongings” were taken from her house in the Hollywood Hills while she was not home; Lohan’s father told TMZ.com that damage included a safe being torn from a wall.

NBC orders pilot for legal drama

NBC has greenlit a pilot for Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, a, yes, lawyer show about an attorney “who suffers panic attacks and takes up coaching clients to represent themselves in court,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Rex has been kicking around NBC since 2007, when writers Andrew Leeds and David Lampson — who won Bravo’s Situation: Comedy contest show in 2005 — initially pitched it. The network passed then, but executive producers Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun brought the script to the network’s new leadership more recently, and “this time, the response was positive.”

Morton, West, Walker cast in 'John Carter of Mars'

Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker have all been cast in the upcoming film adaptation of John Carter of Mars, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels. They join the previously cast Taylor Kitsch, who’s playing the titular Carter, a Civil War veteran who is transported to Mars, and Willem Dafoe, who will play Carter’s Martian ally Tars Tarkas. Morton will play Dafoe’s daughter, West will play “Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars,” and Walker is set to play “Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. John Carter of Mars marks director Andrew Stanton’s first live-action feature.

BET may bring back 'The Game'

BET is “in talks” with producers of The Game to bring a new season of recently canceled CW multicamera comedy to the cable network, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Game, a spinoff of Girlfriends, follows a few members of a fictional professional football team and the women in those players’ lives; it premiered in 2006.

Ryan Jenkins, reality TV contestant suspected in murder case, found dead in Canada

Ryan Jenkins, a contestant on VH1 reality series Megan Wants a Millionaire and subject of a manhunt as a suspect in the death of his ex-wife, Jasmine Fiore, was found dead in a motel room in British Columbia, Canadian law enforcement officials announced on Sunday, CNN reports. The N.Y. Times, among other media outlets, are characterizing it as an “apparent suicide,” citing Canadian police. Jenkins had faced first-degree murder charges in California. His whereabouts were unknown for a week after Fiore’s body was discovered last Saturday near Los Angeles. Canadian police were unable to say how long Jenkins’ body was at the motel before its discovery, according to an Associated Press report.
