Billy Ray Cyrus on Miley's pole dancing controversy: She 'loves entertaining people'

Categories: Music, News, Television

Billy Ray Cyrus spoke to Access Hollywood about his daughter Miley Cyrus’ provocative, pole-dancing performance at the Teen Choice Awards earlier this month, telling the entertainment show, “You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people. She loves singing [and] songwriting.” At the Aug. 10 awards show, Cyrus’ 16-year-old daughter danced with a metal pole attached to the top of an ice cream cart pushed by her backup dancers and, subsequently, the criticism from the blogosphere flooded in. Continued Billy Ray to Access: “I always tell her to love what you’re doing and stay focused for the love of the art and not worry so much about opinion.”

What he really is saying “I am going to tow the line and look the other way because if I criticize her she will file for emancipation and cut me off the gravy train before she turns 18.”

    • Rush

      Or Disney will fire him.

  • SB

    PEDOPHILE.
    BRC is sick.

    • yogi

Ah come on people. This is just a supportive father. Probably more supportive than the fathers of other strippers.

      • annaBnana

        HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA!

  • Daddy’s Little Girl

What’s up with the hollywood dads and moms? BRC has gone on record about his family’s Christian values, but it’s a-okay for baby girl to pose near naked, pole dance and date a 20 year old? Pastor Joe Simpson leeringly talked aboutJessica’s Double-Ds. Lindsey Lohan’s mama was too busy being her teenage daughter’s party buddy to notice or care that baby girl was fast becoming a strung out junkie and blew her career. Daddy Lohan is a criminal. Most of the child entertainers would grow up okay if they had decent parents.

  • carole

so fine – BRC does not have an issue with the suggestive moves made on the moving ice cream truck that some have taken to less than wholesome pole dancing – it’s art – whatever – art does not require you to split the legs and thrust into the air – cheerleaders do a move that is much more civilized – they also have more fabric covering their ends and not a camera practically shoved up into it… you as a parent should at least be listening to what is the general vibe out there – your kid has made some not so smart decisions – or were they YOUR decisions – anyway – I am so over the whole Hanna Montana – Miley Cyrus thing – you are a s^%$

  • Rob

    That’s “POLE” dancing, Tanner.

“Poll Dancing” would be what politicians like to do.

    • Fatima

Yikes. Glad I wasn’t the only one who saw that.

  • Mike B

Give it a rest people. She’s not doing anything wrong. You people just love it when other people “screw up”. It makes your lives look better.

    • twinkie

      amen

    • pete

A 16 year pole dancing is not wrong? That’s some great value system you have.

      • James

I was all ready to criticize after I saw the pictures.. but when they showed the video it was clear that she wasn’t doing a pole dance. She was using the ice cream truck as a prop and the pole was there so she could hang on. Never at any point did it look like a pole dance.

      • cookiemac

I have to agree, the photos look much worse that the video. To me it just looks like she is dancing on top of the cart, and is using the pole to hang on to while it is being moved. I’ve seen pole dances ;) and that ain’t a pole dance

      • michelleg

god! all she did was do a small dip that was over in a sec! you call that pole dancing? the pole was clearly there to help her stand on the ice cream truck. dont over react people! and plus this is old news why cant people just leave it in the past?!

      • Andrea

I am not a big fan of Miley and when I started reading all the “OOH SHE POLE DANCED” comments on blogs, I figured she did some really over-the-top, way too sexual routine. She held on to a pole for like, 5 seconds, and was dancing at the same time. No way was that pole dancing. Good, high-quality art? Nope! But def. not the R-rated striptease people are making it out to be. Sheesh. PS I am also the mother of a young girl and trust me, hate how young girls are objectified.

      • annaBnana

sorry my 16 year old starts pole dancing, Im contacting Disney immedately…….cash in my cash cow while its hot!

    • Jane

I don’t think that people love it when others screw up- it’s just that no one likes a hypocrite. If you’re going to talk the talk, then walk the walk. I am a Christian and believe me, when people who profess they are Christians sell out, it makes the rest of us who do live out our faith look bad.

    • jools

Huh? Did she do “nothing wrong” or did she “screw up”?

    • Siera

God, she freakin’ 16! You think she should be doin’ that? If Billy Ray cared more he would stop her. Goodness!

  • twinkie

I personally did not see the pole dance that Miley supposedly did, however, I think that she is being unjustly judged. She is a sixteen year old girl. I am sure that all of us at some time did things that we thought were cool at that age and later thought- you know what that wasn’t cool. I am disturbed to see that so many people are envious of her fame. If she were the hometown girl doing kareoke and doint the same type dance, people would not think anything of it. She is young and if that is all she does, she’s doing pretty good. Don’t judge her or her parents for this. Your children are probably guilty of worse. The “half-naked pics” she did was not her parents fault. That was done without their knowledge.

    • Carole

Karaoke – is entertainment – and very few times I have seen a person – who is not over-served – actaully split and thrust during their performance – take a look at some of the still pictures – split/thrust and some of the looks of the audience members – ask those girls what they thought

    • cindi

If that’s all she did, let’s not mention her 20 year old boyfriend living with them and posing almost nude. She is on a
Disney show, her average fan is like 5-10 years old. I saw the show, yes her first move was way to much, she did calm it down, but why the cart in the first place, it made no sense. And as for her career, I am the mother of 3 daughters who all used to love Miley. Now they all think she is skanky and dresses like a slut, yes her outfit was outragous. Sorry but this mom calls them like I see them. She’s on the way to being the next lindsey!

  • pete

I imagine anything goes when you are pimping your child, as long as the money keeps coming.

  • Mama

    Dear Twinkie,
Her father was at the photoshoot for the half naked pics. He posed with her looking like her pimp. My daughters are very close to their dad but most family photos do not show them lying on their father in a provocative way. She is 16 and entitled to be a kid, but she needs to remember that the age group that is keeping her rich is from 7-14. For me..no more Hannah/Miley in my house. I’m no prude by any means, but I want my daughters to know you get more respect with your brains.

  • Anthony

She wasn’t pole dancing. There was a pole on the ice cream truck but she was far from pole dancing. People really do love when people make “mistakes”. It’s crazy how fast everyone is to criticize. It must be great to know that your children are perfect and listen to everything you tell them to do. Let me know how you do it and then you can teach all the parents around the world how to raise their children. I really think people need to settle down and worry about their own kids. Miley is a great role model and she is growing up and when we grow up sometimes we do things called mistakes, which is how we learn.

    • Nicole

I saw it and she dropped it like it was hot on that pole. BTW, I was at the park yesterday and the ice cream truck drove by. To my surprise, there was not pole on top.

      • m

nicole? thats because people dont usually stand on them. it was part of her act s*upid!

      • Kathryn

To m: Precisely. People don’t dance on top of them. So why did she? Okay it’s something maybe a little different and interesting. Personally, I’m also a little inclined to believe they used the ice cream truck at least in part as an excuse to include a teeny sampling of pole dancing so that she could be all “edgy”. Granted, most of her dancing on it was pretty innocuous, but that initial dip was totally a skanky pole dancer move. If she hadn’t done that, the act would have been fine in my mind.

    • twinkie

I agree. These people who are so judging would probably not want to share their past. Good thing the internet and cell phones were around when they were young.

    • AMR

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! I HAVE 4 CHILDREN AND 3 ARE HUGE MILEY FANS! THAT IS FINE WITH ME…I’LL HANG HER PICS ON THEIR WALLS. I’VE RAISED A TEEN JUST FINE AND HAVE TO GO THROUGH IT 3 MORE TIMES! NO ONE HAS DONE DRUGS OR GOTTEN PREGNANT SO YES I AM A GOOD MOM! LEAVE HER ALONE ALREADY PEOPLE! IF YOU DON’T LIKE HER QUIT LOOKING UP STUFF ON HER TO GRIPE ABOUT!

  • meso soup

Why support a talentless hack like Cyrus? America needs to educate themselves on talent.

    • m*

dont be jealous miso soup! at least she has a talent, you probably dont!

  • Kim

I did not see the performance in question. But did she lick or hump the pole? Did she turn upside down spread eagle? I dunno… I think that it may have just been part of the choreography. She is an entertainer. Give her a break. She is a teenager and to a teenager, pushing limits is their game. My teenager tests the limits within her world and Miley is testing the limits within her world.

    • Carole

the actual video of the performance was nicely edited – but the still pictures tell a different story – spread eagle – yes in a still pic published – there was the spread… so why was it so important to incorporate a moving ice cream truck into the show – why not just park the ice cream truck on stage and dance on it – no moving – no pole – no controversy

    • Jay Es

Sorry, but a girl who shows up at a “teen” award show at the age of sixteen, wearing a jumpsuit over a bra and a shirt exposing her cleavage is not acceptable. She is modeling what girls will want to aspire to. The girl is icky and she should mirror her so called conservative lifestyle in how she presents herself. She is over exposed and will end up out of control. The girls who follow her are at least 12 and under and they will try to model the same looks and behaviors. So it’s ok for a 16 year old.. How about 13? As parents we should definitely provide better “entertainment” for our children. This is the last I want to see of Miley Cyrus. YUCK

  • Pslightly Psycho

This is so sad. How Hollywood is more than willing to exploit young women (e.g. Britney, Christina, Lindsey, and now Miley) sexually as long as it makes money. Like the VANITY FAIR photo, Billy should have put an end to this RIGHT AWAY. But he is an evil man, more concerned about his daughter’s bank account than her well-being or her image as a 16-YEAR OLD sex object. It’s sick. And some of the replies on this thread scare me: how some of you actually applaud this behaviour. You are all as mentally ill as the Hollyweird folks.

  • Brian

What kind od Father would say that??? This teen is supposed to be a role model? SAD…….wonder what he’d say if she posed nude?
