Joe Jonas, one third of the teen pop sensation the Jonas Brothers, will be a guest judge during the audition rounds for American Idol’s upcoming ninth season, a source close to the show confirmed to EW.com this evening. The source said news is cloudier concerning published reports that season 1 Idol champ Kelly Clarkson will also join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi at the judges’ table throughout the callback episodes filming in the next few weeks. It was previously announced that Shania Twain, Mary J. Blige, Katy Perry, and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham have all been tapped to fill the seat once occupied by Paula Abdul, who stepped away from the show earlier this month after a bitter public contract dispute.

Shania and Mary J. I can understand. Victoria “posh” Beckham and Katy Perry, however, I do not. Posh was barely a pop star as it was. I would never seriously take singing advice from her. I would laugh myself silly. I love Katy Perry, but her music is sooo fixed in the studio, I couldn’t take her seriously either. Her voice is so paper thin and live her voice cracks non stop. Love it when it sounds ok on cd however.
You’re kidding right? The Spice Girls were *huge* throughout the world (less so in the US, but still HUGE). They set records with at least four albums. And it’s not that I’m a huge fan, but the fact is, she’s as valid of a (past)popstar as any grop artist you can think of (and certainly more of one than Paula – and I’m a Paula fan).
I see what you mean about Katy’s voice but I can assure you it is very weird because I saw her 3 times live and her voice is amazing, soulfull and everything. I don’t understand why she sounds so bad on TV. I never heard someone sing so well live

Her voice probably differs based on the venue. Live shows, like live in concert, have sophisticated sound boards that can autotune a singer’s voice AS THEY ARE SINGING LIVE.
Whereas on a live appearance like on The Today Show or The View, they don’t have the entire soundboard set up, so their “truer” voice is heard. And I agree, Katy is not a very talented singer. Her stage presence and fashion choices carry her through. Her voice, unaltered, it quite weak.
During their heyday, the spice girls were just as popular and successful as Paula Abdul. Granted their shelf life was a bit shorter, but they were HUGE. Lest we forget Paula was a studio artist. Have you EVER heard her sing live? Nope. She was sued by a “back-up” singer who said she actually did the lead vocals on Paula’s hit songs. Paula, like most of the top singers today are studio acts.

I’m ridiculously excited about Joe’s guest spot. I’m sure it’ll be brief, but I’m intrigued. I’ve NEVER watched American Idol, but I am a huge fan of the Jonases, and of Joe in particular (I don’t think people have any idea how spectacular he is live in concert… (it’s what fuels their success). Likewise great unknown about the Jonases is how open they are to all music; they are true music lovers as well as musicians, and share that with their fans constantly. Their taste is awesome, all over the place/time/style, & it’s really cool. So, American Idol, KUDOS, you’ve finally gotten me.

I would love to see Kelly Clarkson guest judge. She is so cool and funny. She is the reason I am a big fan of the show. She has such an amazing voice. I would love to see her perform on the show as well. She is awesome live. I am so excited about the new season now.

Kelly would be my first choice. She is so special and cute and has such charisma. Plus, having been in the contestant’s place, has a special insight that these other judges don’t.
Once the show gets to the Top 16 or whatever, they should have Madonna be either a mentor on one episode, or have her judge on ocassion. That would me a dream show.

Well actually Joe doen’t suck he is a teen pop sensation. American Idol is having him as a judge for publicity. Do you have any idea how many people love the Jo Bros do you know how many teens will be watching let alone all of the original AI fans. They just want their ratings to go up. There is no point of dissin Joe and he must not suck that bad because the Jonas Brothers have only been out for a couple of years and they already have their own tv show and have starred in movies so don’t be a hater. I think since they decided to put joe as a guest judge then it means he’s good, and don’t say he can’t sing have you actually heard him live? Probably you will say no coz if you did you won’t be saying this. And the Jonas Brothers are amazing talented singers and wheather you liked it or no their fame is growing every day, they had sold out shows in North America, south America and Europe with more than Million fans and they were also nominated for a Grammy. Doesn’t all of this makes them good singers to you?
I say no he can’t sing “coz” I heard them perform on Dancing With the Stars once and it made my ears and those of my fiance bleed into a puddle of tortured mush. And that show is ostensibly live. Sold-out shows with millions of fans does NOT make you a good singer. They were nominated for a “best new artist” Grammy, I can only assume because they were such a big deal to their zillion hormone-driven fans. It wasn’t one of the “you write/perform great music” grammys, so I can’t take it seriously. Also, making someone a judge doesn’t therefore mean they’re good – it means in this case that he is famous with lots of fans (again, fanbase is NOT an indicator of quality singing) and AI wants to attract those fans to the show for ratings.

The Jonas Brothers are simply phony sell outs. I remember before they (((SOLD OUT))) to Disney. They were perpetually flying under the RADAR. They got an offer from a large greedy corporation (Disney) and once they signed, they sold out their musician integrity. So now they have none… NONE. Hanson — in the mid-90s — *never* had to sell out in order to achieve a higher level of fame. They got their on their own merits. That’s admirable. Not what these marginally-talent know-nothings. Do you think they REALLY wanted to *garbage* like ‘Camp Rock’?! C’mon! You give your soul to dance to Disney’s tune. It’s pathetic. They’re worthless sh|it. Not even worthy of shining my shoes for selling out.
Having Idols as guest judges would be the most fun of all. Who cares about Posh? Bring on former winners, runners-up and those Idols went on to be HUGE HUGE HUGE.
I’d rather see former just former AI contestants as the guest judges – their previous experiences on the show and since would carry a little more heft with me, but thats just my opinion. (And it wouldn’t necessarily have to be winning/successful AI contestants, either.)

Wow- what’s with all the hate for the Jonas brothers? I understand if you don’t like their music or the way they sing, but to call them talentless is is ridiculous. They write their own songs, play their own instruments and have been touring and performing for years. They are young but they are experienced in the business, and Joe will do just fine as a celebrity judge.

Anybody see the recent Timeout NY feature in which the Jonases (Joni? Jonex?) served as music editors for a day? Well, check it out. They’re a lot savvier than some of you boobs are making them out to be, and Joe made more sense than the other two. Chazz’s subtle rejoinder aside, I think it’s a cool choice.
For a time ago, I was not liking jonas brother because they was on disney all time with ms. hannah. but now i see them on thinks other then disney and i thing that they are okay. they has a funny one, they has a serious one, and they has one that look like he could be movie star one day. in music buisness i think it good choice to have one of the brother in the idol.
