Kate Winslet signs on for 'Mildred Pierce' redo

According to Variety, Kate Winslet will star in a mini-series adaptation of Mildred Pierce, a thriller based on James M. Cain’s novel about a bored housewife-turned-entrepreneur undone by her own lust for power. Joan Crawford won an Oscar for playing the title role in a 1945 film version of the novel. I’m Not There director Todd Haynes will direct the mini-series, which HBO is said to be interested in buying.

AWESOME! I’ll watch Kate Winslet in anything. I haven’t heard about Mildred Pierce before. Sounds like an interesting premise, so I might check out the original film with Joan Crawford and the novel.

    1. She does not play a bored housewife. She is deserted by her husband and takes a job as a waitress so she can feed her family.

    2. She is not undone by her lust for power. If anything, her problems stem from wanting the absolute best for her children and spoiling them rotten.

      3. It’s spelled PIERCE.

      Exactly, Keith!

Keith, you must be refering to the movie version of the book. This is an adaption of the book, not the movie. The books is quite different and and the description is accurate. Pick up a book and step away from the TV and computer. It might do you some good.

kate and jon. all i can say is they are just creepy. how did they get so popular. talk about airing dirty laundry on public. who cares anyway? they are a joke and so pathetic. she is just doing what is “good” for her children? give me a break. just shut up and really do what is best for the children. yuk. how can they be news when soldiers are dying every day? what does that say about us?

can’t wait to see kate winslet in another film. she is a genius. and one of the best.

The project sounds interesting. I am a fan of both Winslet and Haynes. It would be great if HBO did pick it up. My only concern is that, if someone from the Twilight series is not cast in this, we may never hear another word about it.

Whenever I hear Mildred Pierce, I always think “Mildred Fierce”–Carol Burnett’s spoof on her old show. I wonder if Kate is going to wear the Joan Crawford eyebrows. Probably not. And Sean, great dig at EW for their unrelenting Twilight coverage. I’m thinking of canceling my subscription at this point.

    • Lyn

Ha! My first thought was, “She’s already got the big black eyebrows!” (They’ll just need some shaping…….)

“a bored housewife-turned-entrepreneur, undone by her own lust for power.”
If anything, that describes ‘The Damned Don’t Cry,’ not ‘Mildred Pierce.’

Kate is a great actress but really she can’t hold a candle to Joan’s ‘doormat’ of a mother. Next she’ll be doing a remake of “All About Eve”. Blaphemous!

Todd Haynes? I wondered what that guy has been up to… I loved “I’m Not There” and really enjoyed “Velvet Goldmine,” but “Far From Heaven” is still my favorite of his. Although I’m a little disappointed that he’s doing an adaptation instead of another original, I think it might be interesting to see how his approach to the material compares to the classic earlier film. :)

I like & respect Kate Winslet , but she seems too young to portray the lead character in “Mildred Pierce”. This wonderful role should have been given to Annette Benning, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Kristin Scott Thomas, Glenn Close, or Janet McTeer.
