Country music star Lorrie Morgan has joined Joe Nichols to headline the Broadway-bound production Pure Country. The new musical, based on the 1992 movie of the same name, is slated to open on Broadway in early 2010. Nichols will play disillusioned country superstar Rusty (based on George Strait’s Dusty in the movie) and Morgan will play Rusty’s ruthless manager Lula (played in the big-screen version by Lesley Ann Warren).
“I never thought my life’s path would take me to Broadway, but when I heard they were creating a musical based on one of country music’s best-loved films, I knew I had to be part of it,” said Morgan, who will make her Broadway debut. Meanwhile, her next album A Moment in Time will hit stores in October.
Peter Masterson, a veteran of the musical and film of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, will direct the play and co-author the book with Rex McGee. Country fans can expect to hear the film’s hit singles “Heartland” and “I Cross My Heart” in the otherwise new score.

no offense to joe nichols but “pure country” had one good thing going for it and that was the music of george strait – with him singing it. otherwise this should last just about as long as “9 to 5″ did on brodway – maybe shorter
