Hollywood directors protest decision to time-shift Emmy categories

Tags:

Now Hollywood directors have issues with the TV Academy’s decision to pre-tape certain categories for the Sept. 20 Emmy telecast. Variety reports that the Director’s Guild of America fired off its own protest letter to the TV Academy today, saying it would be in “material breach” of its longstanding agreement with the union if the Academy moves ahead with plans to time-shift eight categories in an effort to make the show more viewer-friendly. The trade publication said the guild appeared ready to revoke its arrangement with the TV Academy allowing free use of clips via a waiver of the DGA contract.

“Unless the Academy reconsiders the proposed change in presentation of the directing awards, the guild considers that it is no longer bound by its commitments to the Academy under that agreement,” wrote Warren Adler, the DGA’s associate national executive director.
