Remaking “Harvey” , is much worst than re-doing “Psycho” & “Willy Wonka” ! Tom Hanks’ recent movies have caused him to lose much of his charisma. If a “Harvey” remake has to be done, I would choose James McAvoy, Chris Pine, or Emile Hirsch.
Hollywood is really running out of ideas. Is this remake really necessary? Can this film be improved? I thought the trend nowadays was to remake every movie from the 1980s? Can Spielberg ‘reboot’ the Back to the Future series? What else is left from yesteryear to remake—Purple Rain? Porky’s? Top Gun? I’ll stay home when 2010′s ‘Harvey’ arrives at theaters and watch the 1950 classic instead.
If I want to see a giant bunny rabbit, I’ll rewatch “Donnie Darko”. Hollywood remakes are so ridiculous when there are like a million screenwriters out there who have original ideas but can’t get their stuff seen by the big producers b/c they are too busy getting bjs from their assistants in Lot B.
Stupid idea and I like Tom Hanks but he ain’t Jimmy Stewart.
what about ryan gossling?
What above Zach Quinto?
He’s already revived Spock
I think Spielberg is going to do a great job. OK, I wasn’t crazy about the last Indy, but I think that’s partly because nobody wants to see an aging Indiana Jones. With the right actor, and based on the original PLAY, I think this’ll be cool to see.
I love how people who don’t work in Hollywood have all these fantasies about how things go down here. Nobody’s hiring your screenwriter friends because a) they suck b) they can’t get rep because they suck c) and if they can’t get rep, they can’t get their scripts read by the studios. This is for legal reasons. You’re dealing with massive corporations, not some douchebag 80′s movie version executive getting blown in a parking lot. Look, really talented people get stuff made. Like Neill Blomkamp, a relatively unknown guy from South Africa who created District 9. Don’t tell me talented people don’t get a shot. It’s the people who have an inflated sense of their own talent who are constantly bitching about remakes being made. They’ve been making them forever! They make money! People love them! In this case, I think it’s going to ride on the actor they pick. Not to emulate Jimmy Stewart – it can’t be done. Not to imitate the original film, but to come up with a completely different adaptation.
There’s wayyy too much complaining about projects that aren’t even out yet. People really are just spewing bile and making giant assumptions about how badly something’s going to suck because they have terribly boring lives. Man, sucks to be famous and have to live up to such unrealistic expectations. You should be happy that hundreds, if not thousands of people are going to be employed in the production of this film. I’d be happy to have a job on Harvey right now. Bitch at Spielberg all you want, remake or not, I for one am glad they’re still making movies so I can have something non-depressing to look forward to.
Haha, man, this talk is getting waaayyyy too serious! Funny though, because who sees a remake thinking, ooohhh nooo… they’re going to ruin the first one? I have a DVD copy of Harvey, seen it many times, love it so much… but if the remake is interesting, I’ll own that DVD too! I don’t care, they can remake it 20 times, still doesn’t take away Stewart’s performance and the charm and sweetness of the original one. I love movies… and Spielberg’s movies especially. Indy.. AI… ET… Close Encounters… bring it on!
I agree. Younger people won’t sit through a black and white movie. And who can blame them? If I was in my 20s right now, I don’t think I’d be salivating at the prospect of sitting watching an old flick where everybody speaks Standard American English. Let them introduce the story to a new generation. Spielberg has made some incredible films, I think we can expect some good things here.
Hugh Laurie would do it magnificently. There are few people who could immerse themselves into a role that they are excited about as does Hugh.
He is a master of wordless communication – I could see in his face the strange combination of sad wisdom and independent madness that portraying Dowd would require.
In a recent online chat on the Gold Derby website, Hugh was asked:
———
You mentioned James Stewart as an inspiration – Spielberg is doing a remake of Harvey – would you be interested?
HUGH LAURIE: Harvey, heck yes…
Come on, Steven! Give us an origional film! No more remakes!
